There will be no further updates for Blackmoon Prophecy. All remaining issues seem to be little oddities caused by event processing speeds that only cause issues for a select few. I can't fix those, sorry.

NOTICE: Do not edit the game without first applying the David patch. This is because some monsters have over 1000 attack/magic and 100,000+ HP. Editing without the David patch will reduce monster stats to rm2k3's default maximum values. Ignore this warning if you already have applied the David patch to your rm2k3.

What is Blackmoon Prophecy?
A Final Fantasy fangame that I started long ago in 2003 that is meant to emulate the first six entries of the series (though I mostly focus on FF4 and FF5 for gameplay and mapping, and FF6 for battle aesthetics). Aside from just being a fangame, Blackmoon Prophecy is also a tribute to Final Fantasy in the sense that I'm trying to put together many of the things I loved about playing RPGs growing up into this game. It's a love letter to retro gaming and our childhoods.

How long is the game?
My best guess is currently about twenty hours, but I'm not 100% sure. My testing sessions were broken up very often so I can't measure how long it took me to beat the game personally. I'm certain that it was over 15 hours though, and since I made the game I expect the average time to be higher than that for everyone else. My best guess is 20+ hours.

Do I need the RTP to play?
Heck no!

Are there any impressive custom systems, impressive features, etc?
Long story short, no. The early Final Fantasy titles were not known to blow our minds with amazing features (FF3 and FF5 were really the only ones that did in my opinion, and only because of their job systems).

There is no steal command, "throw" items are selected by going to items and choosing the item to throw, and "jump" isn't a command, but rather several different abilities that have jumping animations.

As a result, Blackmoon Prophecy is just a retro romp that just tries to recreate what we all used to feel as we'd trudge through all of the caves and dungeons of the early Final Fantasy games.

The most advanced aspect of Blackmoon Prophecy's gameplay is a simplified version of Final Fantasy 8's weapon upgrading system. A few minigames can possibly be included as well (auction house, betting on chocobo races, etc.) but this game is kept simple to emulate the simple games it is inspired by.

How many <insert something here> are there in this game?
Permanent Playable Characters: 11
Temporary Playable Characters: 2
Equippable Items: 150+
Mandatory Dungeons: 30+
Monsters: 400+
Playable Hours: 20-30 hours (presumably)
Optional Dungeons: 10+
Towns: 20+
World Maps: 3

What Final Fantasy mainstays are used?
Some examples for each of the following...

Black Magic: Fire, Blizzard, Thunder, Bio, Quake, Meteo
Effect Magic: Berserk, Black (Blind), Confuse, Dispel, Mute
Monsters: Bomb, Behemoth, Cactuar, Tonberry, Zuu
Summons: Carbuncle, Ifrit, Phoenix, Ramuh, Zoneseek
White Magic: Cure, Esuna, Life, Regen, Pearl

As far as items go, all of the standard potions, ethers, and status curing items are there. Shards (which increase stats) are also borrowed from FF7.

Improving Blackmoon Prophecy's Early Portions

I'm a firm believer in the philosophy that you CANNOT please everyone who plays your game, but... if someone seems to enjoy your game but points a finger at an area of a game (or even an entire portion) and says "this sucks" then steps should be taken to make that part of the game as fun as the portions that do seem enjoyable.

So here is my situation. The first several hours of Blackmoon Prophecy are clearly less enjoyable than the latter portions of the game. While I've taken a few steps to make some parts better (reducing the number of maps in some of the early caves, making dialogue more coherent, etc.), there is only so much that I can do without feedback because Blackmoon Prophecy is MY baby, so I'm going to love it regardless of any issues and will obviously overlook imperfections that you guys pick out pretty easily just because I won't see them as easily.

What I want to do is improve some areas of the game to make the story flow better and to prevent players from getting bored or frustrated. Here are my current ideas that I might implement in addition to anything that you guys may pitch.

1. Make the Hillsdale quest (killing monsters in the desert and then using the underground passage) completely OPTIONAL. This would result in a new path being cleared in the mountains southwest of town for the player to pass straight through. The whole Hillsdale chain of events would instead end in some pretty useful treasures and perhaps a cutscene or something. Maybe interactions between Elina and Nobumasa to flesh out their stories a little more.

2. Teleport the player back to the start of the majority of dungeons after completing them (except for those that are pretty short).

3. Remake some of the early caves. The newer caves that I've been adding lately, such as Bafsk Subterrane and Mt. Figaro, have been significantly more interesting than the early caves of Blackmoon Prophecy. I may remap some of the older caves to give them added personality and make them more enjoyable to pass through. The Cave of Surt and Trei Catacombs are probably massive borefests for a lot of people. That needs to be fixed for sure and I intend on doing just that. Having multiple cave dungeons is fine, they just can't all look identical and have no interesting features. That's the problem with the early caves of Blackmoon Prophecy.

4. Give Vahn a little bit more to do. I think I want to give him an attack called Armor Breaker or something, and an increase of about 10 to his max MP at the start wouldn't hurt either.

5. More cutscenes. When there's nothing AT ALL to break up the endless roaming from point A to point B to point C I can understand how some players may lose focus a bit. I may add a few cutscenes here and there to remind players of what is happening in the story, where they're going next, or how the characters are feeling. These events increase in frequency as the game progresses, but the early portions rely too much on the player drawing their conclusions about what's happening and how the characters are feeling.

Those are a few of my ideas. I want to know what issues you guys have with Branch and early/middle Lenadia portions of the game so that I can work on them and make them more enjoyable.

Now, I'm not looking to do anything REALLY major like completely change the dialogue or personality of any of the characters and I don't want to scrap any parts of the game because this beast is finished, I don't want to go back to the drawing board and feel like the game isn't done. This is all about improving parts of the game and making them better.

So please, fire away. I'd love to hear all suggestions that you guys may have.

Nobumasa seems to have a large vocabulary compared to the other characters, mostly because Vahn seems to not understand entirely/or care what he is saying.

(looked through the editor a bit. Sorry...)

Just a caution, I used the David patch to increase various things beyond their default limits. If anything seems suspiciously easy at the end of the game or something, then you opening it in an rm2k3 without the patch (assuming you don't have it) might reduce the values I entered in the database.

Aw, give Vahn a break. The poor guy's probably just too used to spending time in the castle cell listening to annoying prisoners.

I have the David patch myself too. :3.
But I gotta say, Bahamut has a ton of HP.
And that combined with his difficulty even though I beat the Arena and got Vahn, Siegy, Ami, and Godot up to level 84 makes me feel like I'm actually fighting Yiazmat instead of Bahamut. D:
But at least it's a good challenge.

By not making any effort to get any chest, do the challenge dungeons, grinding my ass off for loads of Gil for Potions, Status restoring items, and the best equipment, and materials. But I'm pretty baffled my self that I got to that point on the first day.
I implemented a clock feature to see how much time I took (there's some good ones on RRR, and RMN) and all that totaled up to 10 hours. And I was like :0

GOD DAMN YOU!
I have just lost my title.

Wait never mind. He prob. didn't get all trophies.
I forgot it's a race to see who can get all trophies and defeat final boss.
Though it prob. won't be difficult for him to do that.

Still, I am baffled that it could be done in 10 hours because I'm not even sure if I can do that myself. There are a few points in the game where I don't even tell the player where to go (you guys are going to hate me for that).

You didn't just plunk yourself down further in the game or something since you were poking around in the editor? Also Bahamut should be a complete pushover if you're level 84. Even the final boss is a wimp beyond 75.

And what are challenge dungeons? I recall mentioning dungeon challenges once in a blog post, but I never added them to the game.
Hmmm...something doesn't add up. I mean, I don't want to sound like a spoil-sport but it doesn't seem possible to be that high of level even with a ton of grinding. I've fought every monster I've come across and spent a good amount of time down in that keep with ogres and whatnot and with the experience curve in the game, I can't see anyone getting that high of level and doing much of anything without spending at least a whole day working at it...

First off, you do not realize how much I idolize you. Mohamad Pyramid is possibly the best dungeon I have ever experienced in an RPG game EVER. It is better than most of the dungeons in the FF series, and definitely all of the RPG maker games I have played. Ohh my god.

I'm getting the impression that he put himself further into the game or something. I mean, anyone who would get that far into the game should know the answer themselves to what he posted:
But shouldn't the third world be the same size as the first world?

I am assuming it is. Though I don't own 2k3 anymore, so I can't really check.

How do you hate that dungeon? Going through it? I think it is absolutely amazing. I just threw in my Misao nominations for the best dungeon design and such for this game. God that was brilliant.

Hurrah, a Misao nomination! It would be fun to win one for Blackmoon Prophecy since I won the "best fangame" Misao for this in 2005. I don't think any RPG Maker game has won a Misaos so far apart before, so that would be a neat little acomplishment.

And I didn't like mapping the pyramid much. The big sand puzzle room in particular gave me a few headaches.

My personal favourite dungeons are all in the last quarter of the game.

I'm just skilled at these type of JRPG fangames. That's all.

However it really helps to grind for those materials for the better stuff. Saves time for farming Gil to buy better equipment.
And dammit! I was gonna do those after I beat the final boss!

Wanna bet?

And I'm just awesome at speed running while grinding.
You can just give me a game like Chrono Trigger and I'll be half way through it in like 8 hours.
And as for the 0 Gold I had to use it all to buy healing items to beat the whole Arena. (That was the last thing I did)

I'm going to have to call you out on what you're posting anepicrtpmapper, because the titles (dragoon, swordsman, blue mage, etc.) of the characters change throughout the game. Also my level 50 Vahn on one save has far more MP. An event grants him a big MP bonus that I see you didn't pick up. You definitely skipped some portions.

Go ahead and muck around with the game all you want, that's cool. Just don't pass off fake progress as genuine, because the other guys posting in here are half-seriously trying to beat each other.

EDIT:
If UPRC's post rings true, I am saved!
I played a couple hours today (just past going to the rift shrine for the first time). It's definitely obvious that you spent a lot of time refining the game, and it's fairly enjoyable.

That being said... I'm not loving it. Actually, I keep playing because I want to enjoy it, and it is generally just aggravating me. Here is my (hopefully constructive) critique:

I feel like the balance is completely off.

The characters are WAY too slow (some battles, I had to wait 20 seconds to get a turn, and the enemies would each move 3 times in the meanwhile. That is crazy. Triple the enemies's damage output and make them move once per party turn)

The elements are ridiculously annoying. Enemies get healed or negate damage from elements all the time but are rarely weak to any, even if it would make sense by rpg conventions. The number of enemies pretty just immune to the magic available to you is pretty frustrating. (On the note, Vera joins just in time for a FIRE-themed dungeon when her only ability is Ifrit? Are you doing that just to mess with the player?!) What is the point of using Oalston if he rarely hits weaknesses? If he's not hitting a weakness, I can do the same amount of damage with another character's physical attack, especially once you hit levels in the teens where basic level spells are too weak but you don't have the -ras yet.

Enemies have bizarrely low amounts of HP. I one-shotted one boss, and killed a few others in a few turns at best. It's sort of crazy. If you get unlucky though, the game can turn on you because the miss rate on some weapons seems to be just kind of nuts. This could also be caused by what appears to be an agility disparity between party members and monsters.

The characters are all very interchangeable because physical attacks are pretty much the only way to go. Elina is nice for Haste, but only because the characters are so damn brokenly slow. Everybody else either has useless/weak abilities, too little MP to use their abilities, or just really boring skills. Ami is pretty much the only exception by level 15. I just slapped the ring that gives berserk on Vahn, gave him that MP draining spear that attacks twice, and just watched him rape the first few hours of the game. I'm hoping this will change as the characters level up.

Also, I feel like I am leveling annoyingly slowly - especially characters with harsher experience curves. I would say that the difference in exp curves between a character like Elina and a character like Vera is pretty crazy. I'm not entirely sure how that will affect the balance later on, but it makes me worry. The slow levelling means slow ability gains, which translates to more stale battles while I wait for my characters to learn spells worth using.

On the plot side, there is pretty much nothing going on. Events keep happening but none of the characters seem to care. Vahn's reaction (or lack thereof) to the whole Hans thing seemed pretty crazy. He barely mentions it, and always sort of as a sidenote. Similarly it seems insane that nobody questions Vera about her turncoat ways. I understand that this is old school, and not meant to be a plot-heavy game, but I think that old Final Fantasy games actually did a lot with very little dialog. In this case though, I can't even tell you what the characters' personalities are. They all have very thin motives for joining, and their lines are all interchangeable. Without the name at the beginning of the line, I would never know who is speaking.

Also, the dialog can be painful at times. Characters have a tendency to overstate things, and they act in very inappropriate ways for who they are (I'm looking at you, Ivalice Generals who remind me of a clique of mean high school cheerleaders)

But the big problem that sapped my will to keep playing (for now) is the game progression. I have been looking for the Crystal of Wind for HOURS. We have trekked across a gigantic continent, found thousands of mcguffins, rescued children and the occasional sheep and nothing has happened! I get to a town and I am thinking "I must be close to the crystal!" the townspeople tell me "We won't let you pass until we force you to help us" and then off I go on some plot tangeant for a second. Then I go on to the next town... and the same thing happens again! And again! And again! I know that this is the "old-school" structure, but I think you took it too far here. You need to let the player feel like they're progressing with the game once in a while. My characters barely level, the shops never change their stock, and I just keep going from generic town to generic town solving generic problems while defeating enemies that fall in a few attacks, assuming my characters don't start missing their attacks like a bunch of blind drunk hobos. I rarely level, rarely gain abilities, and all the stuff my characters are learning now serve no purpose (why am I going to blind an enemy I can kill in two turns? Do any enemies even use enough magic to be worth silencing?). I fight generic bosses, several of which I fought in several final fantasies, in generic dungeons (why does this world have such an elaborate cave system?!?)

Long story short:
I really appreciate the amount of work you put into this game. Good job for completing it. I wish I could enjoy it more, but I am getting frustrated. My two cents on what could make the game more enjoyable (at least for me):
- Lower enemy speed, increasing ally speed. By at least 25% each.
- Increase boss HP
- Give enemies more obvious elemental weaknesses. Why are most fish not weak to lightning?
- Give Vahn and Nobumasa more MP. Give Vera more useful spells at lower levels.
- Break up the long stretches of plot stagnation by having an occasional, short scene meant to advance the characters and their personalities. Maybe you rescue a child from bandits, and Elina shows her motherly side by taking care of the kid. Maybe Oalston thinks Dr. Cid's lab is awesome. So on, so forth.

Just a few thoughts. Take from them what you will. Sorry for the wall of text. Congrats on getting the game done!
