What's wrong with Blackmoon Prophecy?
UPRC- 12/21/2010 09:58 PM
I haven't heard much from those who have tried the newest Blackmoon Prophecy demo, but a few issues were raised and, as always, I want to address them.
One thing that I've heard from several people is that the walking speed is too slow. Originally I did not understand this complaint, since the walk speed is identical to FF4/FF5, but then I clued in that several of the older areas are simply too large, which makes walking around a chore.
To address the walk speed issue, I plan on fully remapping (or heavily revising) the town of Branch as well as Branch Castle. The castle in particular needs to be changed, and I mapped it long before I even knew how to make a proper castle.
There are still a fair number of grammatical errors early on in the game as well, and those need to be fixed up.
So, aside from maps needing to be revised or shrunken down a little and a few grammar errors throughout the early portions of the game, I want to know what else does not seem right.
I'm asking you, anyone who played the demo, to throw me a few bones so that I can make Blackmoon Prophecy better. What bugs/errors/glitches or just annoying features of the game should be changed?
Fire away and give me things to fix!
BONUS QUESTION: Should I add road signs to the world map? I've realized that some people get lost at times. Should I give them directions or let them struggle to find out where to go, as was the case in earlier Final Fantasy titles?

Question: Why don't you just increase the movement speed instead of shrinking maps?
No one ever enjoys slow walk speeds. No one.

About the speed, I'd say have the slow walking speed only occur on the world map but increase it to the default everywhere else. I would suggest making a run key, but working with cutscenes may get tricky.
Give the game to someone outside of the RM community and see if they complain about the slow walk speed. If they do, it's probably a good idea to increase it. This community has always been more critical about things like that than everyday players anyway.
Personally, I prefer the slower walk speed too, but you need to cater to your audience.

Holy Jesus please increase the walk speed. Don't remap anything; just increase the walk speed.

This is why all, despite the improved quality, should strive for an all-midi soundtrack.

They'd rather download 180mb of hentai than your game.

Most likely, but unfortunately the same could be said of your "comedy game".

I just wanted to get involved in this quote chain.
Guys, chill out and stop shitposting about quotes.
And, uh, increase that walking speed. I'll see about an LP - after you send me a version with increased walking speed. =D

Just because the walk speed was slow back in the day doesn't mean that it will fly in this age. We all used to tolerate dial up...yeah. You should increase the walking speed and implement features to allow even faster movement later on. This could be a chocobo, run skill, other things... make it easy to navigate your world, especially if it's an area the character has been through before. They will just want to get it over with. If you try and force some kind of pacing with slow walk speed or no shortcuts then it might turn some players away.
You shouldn't try and make your game exactly like FF5-6. You should take the things that made those games good and make them better.

neeed zidane.wav or what is the point
I remember for DW II on the NES the first time I got on the ship, I thought "why is the ship moving as slowly as when I'm walking? The ship for Final Fantasy moves much faster...wtf is this?"<2 minutes later>"Uggh, I've barely moved because of all the fights I keep getting into"<5 minutes later, now whining>"Geez, HurrrrYY UP alrEEAAdy!!"<10 minutes later, thoroughly annoyed>"With FF's ship, I would've gotten there already--stupid $#@%ing Enix making me wait like this"<15 minutes later--I-wish-this-was-an-exaggeration-but-it's-not>"This...is taking WAY too ARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Sure I got used to it, but I hated using the ship.
Preferred to use the portals when possible and just walk.
The other thing is most of us have gotten used to playing old turn-based 8-bit RPG's on emulators where you can increase the FPS to speed things up, so we've lost our tolerance (and patience) for slow...anything in these types of games.
BONUS ANSWER
Also hate wandering aimlessly
So, I vote for ROAD SIGNS.
