I think it adds a kind of texture to the grass, and it looks nice. I can't really see it if the lines were gone.

I get the FF5 vibe, but how does it remind you of FF9? I won't complain if it does though, I freaking loved FF9.
Mostly because of the minimap style and the airship going round the world, as if FF9 was done in 8bit graphics. :D (I freaking loved FF9 too!)

Haha, they're not too uncommon... And I sort of DID have to look up how to make minimaps work again because I hadn't implemented one in years.

Already done! The second world map doesn't have a minimap (though it easily could if I felt like making one). Third world map is fully mapped and the minimap is working, but a lot of locations aren't finished yet.
