Old legend and mysteries

Storyline

Here we have a classic horror tale. One young lover of horror stories decides to perform a ritual from the book. Bloody Marry is probably one of the oldest horror myths, and is a cliché, but unlike the most of clichés, it’s actually never boring. It makes a decent plot, but there is one flaw. It’s so much common that it stops being truly creepy (at least in my opinion). In spite of it, it’s definitively something that could catch anyone’s attention.

As for the development of the story, it wasn’t a completely classic story. First off all, the weird things began happening before Marry was summoned. It was intriguing, but it also had a flaw. It wasn’t completely explained. Josh, the villain, was the one responsible for it, but it wasn’t explained how he actually did it. He used that weird book of his? Why the players couldn't find out what the book actually was?

The rest of the story was pretty good, the summoning itself was nicely developed, but other than that, I thought it contained many plot holes which could have been filled despite the shortness of the game.

Characters

We have a classic hero of the horror story as the protagonist, which is good. He doesn’t have a big backstory, and the players don’t know much about him. However, I still find him suitable for this story. His mother and adoptive sister also don’t have a big backstory but they are the minor characters, so it’s not so bad.

The main problem when it comes to characters was the villain, Josh. He should have been so much more developed in order for the story to have sense. He wanted to kill his adoptive siblings and he was responsible for so many things, yet there were no explanations for it. Was he the one who made the weird things happen before the Marry came? How he did it? He was a mystery. I always thought mystery was good for horror stories, but in this case it was more irksome than interesting.

Graphics

The colorful maps are very likable. The design of every map is neat, realistic and one of the best aspects of the game. I enjoy examining every room because of them. The graphics slightly look like RPG Maker XP graphics, which is a great thing in my opinion. However, I think that the outside graphic could be more realistic, as well as Bloody Marry's.

Atmosphere

Bloody Marry is a character which is fear-inspiring for a lot of people, so it should guarantee a great atmosphere. However, when it comes to people like me (who tried “testing out” the legend already), it’s just a small detail in the entire picture. There are not so many creepy things in the game. Even when the Bloody Marry chases the player, it’s not so much creepy because it turns out to be an easily escapable situation. There are not even many sounds which help the atmosphere, except the music box. The greatest things are the shattering mirrors, the creepiest aspect of the game so far.

Endings

The multiple ending choices were good as they encouraged the exploration. They were unclear and similar in a way, but I found them interesting, especially the “Last Wish” ending. It did leave me wondering what happened in the end a bit.

Random things I disliked –

Almost complete lack of character backstories.
I wish I could have seen at least one battle.
Lack of character’s reaction when the mirror broke and the lights went out after Marry was summoned.
The game should have contained more dialogues.
There wasn't anything really challenging.

Random things I liked –

The mirrors used like a savepoints were a great addition.
Comments after examining almost every thing.
Easy, yet not boring puzzles.
The intro lines about the mirrors.

Overall impression –

A short game about a popular occult legend which has a lot of potential. It is in need of some improvements, but in spite of everything it is very interesting and funny if you like short, easy to complete games.
