Unhappy Deathday

Happy Birthday is a pretty game with a much darker tones than suggested from the very glittery and inviting title screen. Following the murder of young Anna, you an unnamed female detective- must gather up clues in order to cuss out who killed Anna and why?

The concept itself is very interesting as a large number of games made by RPG Makers are either RPGS, Horrors, or visual novels. This one really sticks out among those and delivers a short but still interesting plot that does satisfy to a degree.

The problems with this game however- come from the audio and the promises of choices.

The music doesn't fit much with the tone of the game in some areas- which can deride the tension that is build well in the story. I felt SE needed to have a much bigger role than the BGM- a room filled with silence with nothing but the clock ticking is a lot more eerie than background music especially when you want to create tension with everyone without them physically interacting.

The promise of choices was probably the most disappointing part of this game though. However I feel this game can be improved if it added more endings and perhaps shift the items around a bit more. Instead of getting the Birthday letter and Inheritance at the end, why not add it at the beginning and keep getting people guessing?

This is not to say the game is bad! The art style is beautiful and could benefit a lot from CG Images; and while the text does need to be re-read and maybe changed a bit (The Maid and The Father) it does make it believable.

As it is the games good but with a bit more work this game could be brilliant

Thanks for the review!

It's not too likely that Happy Birthday will get any extra endings or major changes at this point (though I do plan on putting up a minor update with some bug-fixes and edited text soon), but I would definitely like to make a less rushed, more fully-fledged sequel with a lot more possible routes and endings included. I'll keep the rest of the feedback in mind for the future, too (I do need to work on making better use of SEs - they were pretty neglected - and CGs would be awesome).

Anyway, glad you liked it for the most part.
