The Future of Master of the Wind

The original Master of the Wind (the first arc, at least) will be ten years old in 2015. It's been completed since 2011 and we've been working on other projects since. However, we've decided to try coming back to it and that's a major reason why we've started up yet another forum.

Volrath and I have concluded that it would be a worthwhile effort to remake Master of the Wind and release it commercially (in episodic form, just like the original)

It won't be that epic 3-D version that MotWFan once dreamed up, but it will be a new version of the game that we hope will be embraced by the masses in the same way that the original free version was. This is an idea that has proven itself once before and all the experience we've gained since will help us create a more well-rounded version of MotW that can be released commercially with original music and resources.

It won't be a map-for-map reproduction of the original, however. The combat system in particular is likely to be totally different. The storyline will feel familiar, but it won't be the same sequence of events. We believe that the core of Master of the Wind was its cast of characters and its absorbing puzzles and we will strive to preserve those elements.

For now, this is still only a discussion and there's nothing yet to show. While our new forums is the best place to keep up-to-date and discuss the game, we'll also be updating our RMN page periodically with new info. Stay tuned!

I was actually playing Master of the wind today. I was always mesmerized by the great writing and universe you guys created. My only question is will this effect the production for Project Kobold?

Kobold is already on hiatus while we both focus on our own separate projects. If we do move forward with a new Motw then it would probably remain on hiatus. Whether we return to it depends a lot on how well Motw does. So really I don't have a clear answer right now but I wouldn't expect any production on it anytime soon.
Why is everything so wonderful on RMN right now? Everybody awesome starting their own commercial projects is like the best Christmas present I could ask for. :)

Will you guys be taking down the old MotW while you're working on/releasing the new one? My to-play list is crazy backlogged at the point, thanks to my work and writing and steam-gaming schedule, but if the old MotW is liable to disappear, I will get to playing through it stat.
No plans on taking the original down anytime soon, we'll be in this for the long haul just like last time (although hopefully not quite as long). Not sure about what will happen after a new one would get released, I like the idea of having both versions out there but we'll see.

You guys know exactly it would be no use taking down the original Master of the Wind. Because I would be reuploading it everywhere anyway ;)

In all seriousness, I agree with Volrath that having both versions available sounds like a better idea. It would be kind of tragic to see the roots of this amazing project vanish. Even if the new version is likely to be even better (if that's possible?!)

P.S.: kumada, you should play Master of the Wind as soon as you can either way. Believe me, it will be worth every second.
I'm all for having both versions up, but if you want to do that you'll probably need some kind of AMAZING feature in the commercial version so people will still want to buy it. Like Cave Story +

Circumstance penalty for being the bard.

This is cool news, guys. This is a game I find myself thinking about surprisingly often, and I'd be interested to see what you could do with a new combat system and a new build of the game. If I were remaking this I can think of quite a few things I'd change, a lot are probably the same things you'd change but others would probably be more dramatic than what you'd want to do, though if you're looking for an outsider's opinions/suggestions let me know. But after playing X-Noir I'm pretty confident your overall sense of design has improved a lot and look forward to seeing where you go with this.
