Fantasy RPG

The story revolves around a seventeen year old girl April who finds herself transported to a magical land. There, powerful magicians called Storm Magi rule the lands, each catering to a special element. April soon discovers that she too has a power, and is one of a dying breed - a Thunderstorm Magi, a special Magician that draws their powers from the energies around them. She wants nothing more than to return home, but to do so, she must find a source of energy with enough power to send her back to Earth. To gather that energy, she's told to harness the powers of all the storms and become mightier than she could have ever dreamed. Meeting new friends along the way, and with a formidable foe on her tail, she goes on quest to discover not only the various magical Kingdoms, but also herself in the process...

Recruiting Staff Members

First of all, a quick note. Storms of April started out as a personal project. It's based on a story I wanted to write way back in High School, but never got around to doing. Now I'm trying to translate the story into a gaming format via RPG Maker. If you play the demo, you'll see the problem with that (major issue: way too much dialogue and back story at the beginning). I see the potential in this story as a game and I really want it to see the light of day, but I recognize the need to change it. That being said - I am open to major changes in this game with the help of my staff. I am more than willing (in fact, I want) to relinquish full control of "my" game and to instead make it "our" game. I want this to be a full team effort and not just the creative musings of a dreamer who will end up driving it into the ground. I fully believe in the concept of collaboration, and I am very excited to be opening this up.

The following are the roles I'd love to help me with this project, followed by optional-but-awesome-to-have roles. This is a free game and therefore all work you do for me will not be compensated.

If you are interested in any of these positions, please send me a message on this website with samples of your work. You may apply for more than one position, and each position may be open to more than one person.

All staff members are expected to keep in contact with me in one way or another and also other staff members as they relate to your role. Communication includes e-mail, Skype, this website, whatever. Let's all be friends!

Finally: this is the first time I've 1) recruited and managed a team for RPG Maker, and 2) even been part of a team. Please be patient with me!

Directer: FallenLorelei (me). I'll be helping out all positions - you won't be alone :)

Needed / Urgent:
These positions will be able to help immediately with Chapter 1 as it stands now, so we can release a relatively decent version.

  • Creative Writer & Storyboarder: Responsible for creative elements within the game's story, including extra lore & history, filling in plot holes, and helping with dialogue. Also responsible for the planning and sequencing of main story elements within the game. For example: I have an hour of dialogue/introduction in the demo right now. Let's split it up and make the intro more engaging.
    * Note for this position: I already have the main skeleton of the entire game, Chapters 1 ~ 7, planned out. We can change it and flesh it out as we see fit, but you don't have to feel responsible for creating the entire story :)
  • Battle, Item, & Database Manager: Responsible for balancing enemy encounters with character skills, weapons, and armor (keep the fights interesting). Responsible for balancing gold and item drops, and to some extent EXP. Also may create items and weapons/armor (I currently have enough weapons/armor to last until around level 20, but feel free to get creative if you want).

Could Use...:
These positions I don't necessarily need right now for Chapter 1 mostly because it's already been completed, but if you're passionate about this project and want to change / fix up some things, feel free to apply. However, I will need these for future chapters.

  • Mapper: Look at the screenshots or play the demo to see my mapping style (after modern day introduction, as the setting is primarily fantasy). I like parallax mapping, but for smaller scenes, editor mapping is fine too. I'll simply need to see samples. This position is not urgently needed at this time because most of the maps are already completed for Chapter 1, but feel free to apply if you'd like to change them, or if you want to call dibs for future chapters :)
  • Scripter: This position is borderline optional, but it would be really nice to have some programmers in the project. Let's make this game unique and one-of-a-kind! Because this position is relatively optional, I don't have any plans for scripting to implement (I already use a bunch of free ones that are fine enough), but if you're interested - send me a message with your ideas!

Optional:
But really really want ;) These positions aren't necessarily needed but would just be amazing and great to have. Most of these roles are typically paid work, which is why I am not getting my hopes up.

  • Artist: Creation of busts and facesets for major characters and party members. Also creation of custom battlers for monsters.
  • Pixel Artist: Creation of sprites to match new busts/facesets assuming I have an artist, along with monsters to roam the map. Also creation of custom icons for skills/items/weapons/armors. If you can only do one or the other, that's fine too.
  • Composer: Want to make some beautiful music for my maps? That'd super cool, thanks ;)

Trade:
If you're interested in a trade agreement, here is what I am willing to do for you.
  • Mapping: You'll need to provide the tilesets, unless it is RTP.
  • Creative Writing: I'm confident in my abilities to come up with stories and lore, and helping you flesh out your own story. My weakpoint would have to be dialogue and making characters sound unique, unfortunately.
  • Editor: Me has good grammar, yes?

Thanks!! Actually, yeah, maybe haha~ I don't have any friends in the RPG Maker community yet who could help me with testing so that'd be really nice :D
hope this gets released soon, this looks promising
First of all, calm down. Relax. The game looks nice and is fun to play and I'm sure everybody here has seen way, way worse.

I've played through the prologue up until the group can enter the rainforest and did some battles there. I have a few comments on the game in general and some nitpickings.

- I want to add an introduction cutscene to introduce players to the main conflict (spoiler: a war), but there's already an introduction in which April gets kidnapped, so I am torn. Do I really want to add more cutscenes?

My suggestion is not to do this. Backstory dumps at the start of a game tend to be scrolling masses of text and nothing's more boring than that. If you can think of a way to have that cutscene in a different, more interesting manner, go ahead, but a backstory dump is a horrible way to introduce people to your story.

From what I can tell, you've worked that war pretty well into the storyline so far. The player is completely clueless about it because April is completely clueless. There were a few hints and I think I can piece together some of the story already. It's more interesting to slowly learn about it.

The scene with the queen mentions that Tavin is a refugee from the earth country, so I'm guessing it did not end well at all for them. He also really doesn't want to talk about during the scene in the library where Alec talks about the fire people exploding themselves.

I thought the floating zone was a bit overused in the beginning. Does April really have to float everytime she passes out for a minute? It got explained later on, but cutting out one of the visits might make things more interesting.

Is April too Mary-Sue?

To be honest, that was my first impression of her in the introduction (must be the name/title/power combo). She turned out surprisingly well, so I wouldn't worry too much.

The menu listing April's class and abilities gives the plot twist of her being a mage away really early. Since it's only needed for saving before the reveal, why not disable the menu until after the first war room meeting? Just make Esc bring up the save menu until then.

Apparently, nobody cared that April blabbed to Alec? They seemed to expect it. Also, he figured out how to charge April's battery in five seconds flat, while nobody else could. That's stupid.

The battle icons move a bit slow. Can you speed them up or would that mess with the balancing later?

Aaand now for the nitpickings!

There's a general problem with screen transitions. Weather effects or lighting effects stay active for a second when you switch screens, or they only start after a second. The same goes for sprite changes like in April's flashback.

Sir Gray's lax discipline is very disconcerting. He talks like a very strict person, but allows the green-haired guy to walk across his lap and jump over the table. He also allows Alec to throw an important report in his face. I'm not sure if he's supposed to be this relaxed, but it doesn't reflect in his lines. :D

Not sure about the alchemy minigame. I've only made a potion so far, but is it necessary? Can't you just click the button and the items gets made?

Finally, while April rightfully stays out of the boy's bathroom, Tavin and Alec have no problem following her into the girl's bathroom, which is highly inappropriate!

First of all, calm down. Relax.
I love you, Ell1e! This is exactly what I needed to read. Its great to hear that it isn't as terrible a game as I thought haha.

I agree with everything you said and I'm going to put it all in a notepad file before deciding to tackle the fixes.

The menu listing April's class and abilities gives the plot twist of her being a mage away really early.
Yeeaa for the LONGEST time she was "Student" class with no abilities, and then would switch to Thunderstorm after the introduction. But then then I implemented a new script and it gave me errors galore when I class switched, and no one has been able to help me with that yet. So - until I can get it working - its spoilerific.

Disabling the menu is a good idea though. I could add an AutoSave after the various cutscenes just in case. *chinstrokes*

Anyway - thank you! I'm honored someone took the time to play the game, and write all that down for me.
enjoying this game so far, i would love to see this get finished, though there are some small issues, one being the alchemy parts, like the ell1e said, it'd be better to just have it automatically be done for you, and i also think that instead of simply putting you straight into combat do some sort of introduction for the combat, well not necessarily for the combat itself as that is really easy to figure out, but the top bar for the overdrive stuff confused me a bit till i figured out what it was. I prefer using wasd instead of the arrow keys for movement, but the s button seems broken where april will change directions facing down, but wont move, i think that enemies spawn a bit too fast and maybe have them spawn a bit slower after killing them, i think that april and alec should be a bit stronger when using their normal attack, even though they have high mp and their magic attacks do deal lots of damage, if you're like me and like to do lots of exploring/dont know where to go so that you end up fighting lots of enemies, you'll eventually run out of mp and have no ethers so now tarin is doing all the fighting, also, make some of the prices for items cheaper, in other rpg games i've played at this point of the game you could at least buy like 3 potions and 3 ethers, and i've killed lots of enemies too but they don't really give lots of gold, a smaller gripe is how the drawings of the characters are different in the level up screen, while i do think they look nice, it feels weird going from kinda short hair april to april with longer hair, and a black haired tarin to a redhead one, but this i think isnt a big deal, and now this thing pissed me off quite a bit (it's mostly my fault though), so since i realized how short the demo was i didnt feel the need to save, so i got to the point where i finished most sidequest, but i got to the one where you go to the enchanter girl in the library, she tells you to make that mirror, and when i did and came back to her, the game froze(not exactly) what happened was, the dialog box came up but with no dialog, and the box was "squished" so it was thinner and stretched out from top to bottom of the screen, kinda hard to explain though, and i was so pissed because i didnt save, ehh whatevz, ill just go through with what i did but skip anything optional, anyways, thats it, i really enjoyed this game while i lasted all throughout that glitch, these issues i had i dont really think are particularly huge, except for that last one and the ones about characters being stronger, great game and i hope you get this think done, i'd love to be a tester but seeing as to how crappy my laptop is i think i wouldnt do you any good if i cant tell a difference between lag and glitch, though i guess if you released more demos and possibly the entire game, me and whoever else downloads it can give you some advice, now go on and make this game a huge hit, if you dont i'll stalk your family....... just kidding........ or am I?

Edit: ok i just read the stuff about the level up thing and the mirror, why did i get that weird box glitch though? and yes i did spam enter a lot of times, anyways, whatevs, if you dont finish this game i will find you and i will make you my girlfriend.......wait whaaaaa

I'm glad most of your gripes are due to known issues *relief* and for the rest of your input, I'm gonna write down in my notepad of things to fix!

So sorry about the Mirror bug ;__; I was really hoping that it wasn't a game-breaking bug. I was able to spam Enter (it seems the choices just don't show up??) which is essentially "Yes" and it worked for me. I really need to figure out what's wrong with that common event.

Glad you liked it besides that, though! I'm excited to get this started again!
Ehh it's alright, I'll just get back in and destroy all those monsters and finish rain excursion, btw, where do I go while in the forest? I was walking around so much but couldn't find where to go, didn't know where the machine was or the leysphere

Yea the story ends at that quest. I need to add some cutscenes for all that.

For the rainforest, there's all the treasures you can find - it's mostly only gold at this point, but it'll help one of your gripes about being too poor! And then there's the water dungeon at the end, which will be part of that leysphere quest. It is a fully functioning dungeon, just has no quests for it yet, or final boss. But it's still pretty, has a few puzzles, and treasure :)

wow, a true southern storm :)

Maps look really nice/pretty as does the battle screeniethingy :)

I know NOTHING about game making but if needed, I would enjoy helping with the testing of the game :)

That'd be super helpful, thanks! I have written down all the issues with this first version of the game that you're downloading, but when I get my team put together and we send out another version, I'd love to have you as a tester :D I'll put a post out when that time comes (who knows when!)
Is this still being worked on? I would love to help somehow! (This is SketchPCIS, btw)
