Another milestone

And the first blog post for 2015! :D

Yes. The 3/4 mark of the game has been passed and I've gone past the 300+ map mark as well. I have just completed the maps of the Imperial capital ( a 60x60 juggernaut ) as well as the 'slum' version ( 40x40 ). Tristy and co. will end up here after going through an underground passage, then they need to find a way into the capital, as it is barred by the usual guards ( granted, Tristy can just fire an arrow into the geezer's head, but they have to be stealthy ). I'm probably taking a bit of inspiration from FF12 for this section of the game where the inhabitants of the slums operate on the basis that 'knowledge is power'.

A grim place where the inhabitants are looking for 'a better song to sing'( that comes from 'Educating Rita', btw; one of my favourite movies of all time ). Justice only for the rich, and one kind of punishment for all the lower orders ( you know how it goes by now ).

And the grandiose Imperial capital itself. Most of the inhabitants are paranoid and bar their gates shut, usually with an Imperial guard stationed outside. You can't blame them. Revolt is starting to spring up everywhere by this point in the game. But hey, you get to start travelling in airships at this point in the game as well. :D ( FF12-style, unfortunately. The world map is simply too HUGE for the traditional FF4 method ).

Characterisation-wise, Darcy goes through a bit of it at this point in the game and you get to know a bit of her backstory ( she isn't a stereo-typical Genki Girl, after all ). Plot-wise, the heroes are on a 'rescue mission'. A role-reversal one, at that.

Gameplay-wise, I haven't even touched Darcy and Lance's branching promotion classes because I've been so busy with the level-design process. Because I don't want to make LoTL a 600+ map monster, the player will find themselves backtracking and as a result, I'm adding new areas to the older maps that can only be accessed once the player has some 'Dynamite' in their inventory. Because we all know that going through the same old areas again and again becomes mighty tedious.

The arrow means you can climb the vine and take a shortcut route ( got that idea from Linus ^^ ).

No wonder Laine is angry with Tristy ( comparison-wise, Enelysion was nearing the end of the game at the 10 hour mark, whereas Chapter One has only just begun in LoTL ). And I really want to make Tristy my 'magnum opus', my signature game, but as it stands, Enelysion is still the one to beat.

Here's to a year of successful gam-mak!

Sounds like your making pretty fast progress. Good luck and Happy New Year!
The worst is yet to come though. I've started testing now and will (finally) need to implement a proper Quest Journal ( modern algebra has an amazing one ) for ALL the main and side-quests. It is one thing to make a game 10+ hours long, it is entirely another thing if it becomes too boring, and that's what I'm worried about.

I've been thinking about this a lot of the last couple of days. Seems no-one is interesting in making long JRPGs ( let alone play them to the end ) in RM anymore, and I can understand it. It requires an enormous amount of mental stamina to see it through to the end and great deal of dedication ( and free time ), so to me, the age of those 'epic-length RM games' is already dying. People nowadays are far more likely to sink their time into playing a one hour long game made in a month, or a game with plenty of pretty pictures to look at ( just look at the trend of RM games from last year ) or they look for stuff that is 'ground-breaking' in every way possible.

But the JRPG will always be very close to my heart. I do it because I love it. Simple as that, and that is what keeps me going.
What if you made your airship free-fly like FF4, but had plot boundaries at the edge of the map? I've seen that method done before, like in Legacies of Dondoran, and I intend to use it myself in future games.

I think that has more to do with the rash of review drives, actually. The MS value for a review of Everlong is identical to one for Barbarians and the Necromancer's Tower.

I'd replace that 'no-one' with few, I can only speak for myself but some of the games I played for the review drives were 5-8 hours and a couple were 15+. I think that there has just been a lot of 1 hour-ish games produced for the IGMC that landed here in a rush which shifted focus for a while. There is definitely still a place for the classic JRPG, and yours are JRPG+.

I'll echo nhubi's statement. I'd personally love to play longer rpgs. The biggest issue (that I've seen) between long and short rpgs made in RPG maker is that many developers try too hard to emulate AAA quality titles. Of course, this means that they underestimate just how much work goes into games of that length. A game can be long, but if it's devoid of interesting content and flow-breaking monotony, then it quickly becomes boring to a player and a developer, so they quit.

Plus, the longer it takes to play a game, the longer it takes to comment on it. Which is why I'm assuming fewer people comment on longer games than shorter ones.

You don't have that problem, yuna, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I'm kind of sad nobody makes 15+ hour RPGs anymore. I think it also has something to do with the fact that anyone with the skill to do such a big project, doesn't have the time. I think the only people with the time to handle such a big project are people without the skill. I wonder if there will ever be a point when people don't have to work so hard(looks at the economy) so that a few more big RPGs can pop back up again. I'm glad that your taking a chance to try and make one.
I actually have this goal of making this game the very best darn JRPG made with RMVX. I want to trump Legionwood so hard its not even funny.

Now I can send you out on *100s of sidequests and you'll never lose track of the main story. *jking about the 100s of SQs though.

I was in a design mood today. And depressed.

Yuna, that's the lowest bar I've ever heard someone vocally set.

yuna what are you trying to say about legionwood because i am concerned and curious
I'll say it for her, and probably for a few more of us too. It's mediocre. I wouldn't even argue anyone saying it's lower than mediocre. The only reason it got as much attention as it did is because, for several years, it was the only completed 15+ hour jRPG made in a non-2k maker, and has plenty of tropes/cliches to add familiarity for any newcomers to the indie RPG scene.

On a complimentary note, it inadvertently serves as a bridge game between mainstream and indie, as RM goes. If we got off our artsy fartsy high horses, we could probably learn something about audience catering from it, though I personally think Dark Gaia's Right Stuff, Right Time story was more accidental than intelligent effort.

well yes that's exactly how i feel

i'm just concerned that yuna thinks that it is some god-tier shit that she wants to pummel into the ground because... like louis said, low bar
Oh. Oh, okay.
But I can't see yuna taking Legionwood as a rival seriously. More like something that needs to be stamped. Like Pom.

Pom isn't even remotely comparable, though. It's a lightweight and easy-to-swallow romp in the tradition of browser-based adventure games. Tristian is a nails-in-dirt fully fleshed eastern-style RPG with involved plotlines and an intent for intricate battles.

They're not competitors.
Guys, I don't even like Legionwood. XD ( maybe it was just the DL count *shrugs* ) I guess the only game I can see as a possible rival in VX is Star Stealing Prince then.
Star Stealing Prince IS awfully good... and dang that fandom over on tumblr. >__> *sweats*

In all honesty, I'd not bother comparing yourself to other games and creators! The beauty of making games is that you get to make a thing that is ~yours~, and I've always found that comparing your work to other people's is a quick way to make yourself feel crummy.

Enelysion was a success because you put love and effort into it, and I think you can have the same kind of success with this game! If anything, I'd compare Tristian to Enelysion, since then you'll be able to see how much you've grown as a developer. <3

basically the tl;dr version of this is success is a very personal thing! You get to define whether or not you succeeded, and it doesn't matter if people slam or laud your creation: if you feel successful, you were successful~
Oh, I'm extremely chuffed with what I've managed to do with Tristy so far. =) When it comes out it probably will blow Enelysion out of the water.

And man, I'd give my left leg to have a fandom of my own game on tumblr. But I guess 'gritty, medieval JRPG with no teenage heroes' strikes less of a chord with the 'millenials' ( kids born in the year 2000 and later ) than a gorgeous fairy tale RPG like SSP.

^This.

I try not to compare my games with others in terms of downloads, subscribers, etc because popularity doesn't always equal quality. And more to the point, I'm also terrible at self-promotion or any kind of marketing so I'm less likely to get noticed XD

Just know that there are plenty of us who love what you do and are cheering you on! Let's see how far Tristy can go! :DDDD
Don't worry, unity. I'm pretty terrible at marketing ( I don't know if it's me, but it stinks of shameless plugging, which I hate. Fine for commercial stuff. Not so much for indie ) as well ( but you have your fans, unity, so no worry :D ). And tbh, I never do compare myself to other devs. Maybe I look up to them for inspiration and such ( LINUS being the big one ) but I never will try to compare my games to others. The Legionwood comment was just thrown in there but doesn't mean that I was comparing any of my games to it ( maybe Tristy will surpass that 30K DL mark but it will take a LOT of luck and marketing ).

I love what I do and that should be enough. ^^
Your stuff looks all so awesome and beautiful, I should totally take the time to play it. Such a mighty level of polish ;-;
I think I'll start by Accelerated World! :D

EDIT: honestly I don't even know how tumblr fandoms work

They work? I thought it was just a bunch of rabid fanatics banding together to yell at things in ALL CAPS?
