Artsie stuff and gam-mak ( as usual )

There's no fire in my belly. ;_;

I haven't made much progress on Tristy since the last blog and because my gam-mak drive will slow down when I start work again in February ( that is, assuming I cinch my interview tomorrow ), I need to get a cracking on. But I have been channeling my artsy side again to do a few more cutscenes for the game and try a different visual approach for the narrative ( I won't be re-doing anything though ).

I just wanted to get your guys opinion on a scene that looks like

this...

as opposed to one that looks like this. Previously, these scenes could only be accessed through the Scene Viewer.

Same scene, different approach. While the maps and other aesthetic details are nice to see, Tristy as a whole is meant to be a fairly dark game ( horrors of war, destruction of the human spirit, even incest 0_o ) and using those chibi sprites for major scenes makes it a tad difficult to take it seriously ( the actual drawn scenes are few and far in-between since I figured using them too many times would cause the novelty to wear off ).

For the other option, I'm not limited to how many expressions I can do for the full-body portraits, as seen below. Even though I can use face-sets, I just like using the portraits more. And I like the approach more, since the game is supposed to be a RPG/Visual-Novel hybrid.

The actual drawings themselves are supposed to be pretty dark as well ( hence no colour, just sepia-tinted images )

Other stuff:

From a gameplay point of view, both Darcy and Ianna can now become pretty capable fighters, since Ianna can use swords which uses her MAG stat, and Darcy's knives/daggers use her SPD stat. And I figured it would be good from a storyline point of view as to how Ianna grows as a character ( going from basic healer/light magic caster ) to badass spellsword.

The enemies in the above screen were hard before, until I threw a Flame Blade on Ianna. Her astronomical 52 MAG ( at level 17!!! ) destroyed these things with that sword. And with perfect timing as well, because the Ebony Strain hits Tristian again and her ATK, DEF, MAG and SPD stats plummet by 8 points. In a game where low numbers rule, this is devastating. Poor Lance is still below average though, until he promotes ( then again, the guy will probably still be outclassed by Tristian ).

As for everything else, still testing. >< So no real new content to show yet, apart from some small maps that have been added to existing areas.

So that's it for now. =)

Good luck on your interview!

I'm definitely a fan of the visual novel scenes.

I agree that the visual novel scenes look a lot more cinematic and nice, and are more fitting to the dark tone than the chibi sprites. ^_^
Visual Novel +1
Is Lance going to suck forever? Every time you mention him, it seems like he's going to spend his life in Tristian's shadow as a useful character.

And good luck with that interview too.
Thanks for the well-wishes, guys. =)

I sort of knew what the general consensus would be for the VN-style vs. map/chibi-style cutscenes, but it's always nice to get an extra opinion or two. But how I do wish that gorgeous art was all mine.

As for Lance, he doesn't necessarily fail as a character, it's more that he's a balanced character that doesn't quite excel in any field ( he's got innate Pharamacology which is always nice to have, and some decent skills ), unlike Tristy ( the resident powerhouse when Trabant is not around ), Ianna ( the stand-in mage/healer ) or Darcy ( the dual-wielding dodge-tank ). But compared to what he was like in the beginning of the game, he's grown quite a bit in power. But his Hit Rate does blow at times...
I usually find giving everyone something they excel in is super great! I like to balance characters as if I were balancing a character for tabletop, aka I give them a set number of values to pump into stats, and then balance it across the party. That + unique skillsets tends to give you characters that are neither better nor worse than each other, which is my personal ideal for designing a party. ;w;

At the same time, does it really matter if you can't choose your own party? If it's the choice between him and and somebody else, then it matters. If it's a static party, you could have a hero and three jokesters and the game could still be balanced -- just on an "overall party power" vs. "overall enemy power" scale instead of each character against the others.

Yea, I agree. If you know the what the party composition is going to be, you can get creative with individual heroes - I see a lot of RPGs ease you into the combat by adding an overly-strong character to your starting party, who is later removed or matched by the other characters.

The visual novel scenes look really good, Yuna! I like the campfire background, it fits really well with the style. And I imagine VN-style scenes are much, much easier to design over the map-style scenes.
I don't like the idea of any of my characters being outclassed by another who has a similar class so it does force me to get a little more creative with skillsets, which in itself is easier said that done. Maybe I should just have Lance promote into a Great Knight ( HP and MP-thieving, something that Tristian can't do ) and Darcy should just be a Ninja ( dual-wielding, throw bombs and other crap at enemies, throw coins etc. ).

I want to make it in such a way that you need all your characters in you current party to survive the onslaught of battles so there's party synergy.

Eg: Ianna drenches a foe with a water spell, making it more vulnerable to Thunder magic/attacks, Tristian then whacks it with her Thunder Halberd. Or Darcy buffs the party's Evasion, causing the foes to lose their press-turns ( unless their skills ignore the EVA stat, otherwise Tristian can just use her Stellar Guardian tech to reduce damage taken ). Since I do love giving the player options as well, so there's no 'set' way of overcoming your foes. Limiting equipment to certain characters helps as well ( I pretty much cut Ira's power in half by not allowing her to equip the Aggressor Orb which allows her to strike twice. And she crits. Everyime ).
