Sprites and planned demo

Time for another image-heavy and brief update. I recently started working on behaviour sprites for Tristian and while they were a bit tricky to get around doing, I may have got the hang of it for now.

I think it adds so much more character to them than a mere chibi sprite. They can also convey so much more emotion without uttering a single word. But I do like to show what a character is thinking at times.

Also did some dead soldier sprites, and I have to admit, that scene does look even darker than before. I'll probably add more variety to the dead bodies as well.

More sprites. I've only finished Tristian's full walking frames ( and other expressions ) and will probably start on Ianna's later today.

The soldier sprites still look a little rough around the edges because I realised that I made them too small and had to upsize them by about 150%, so it distorted the pixels a little bit. Same with the blood splatters, but it can be tidied up easily enough.

And some rough sketches, including an AU Tristy singing karaoke for Ianna and a younger TristianxDante.

Tristian is still a paladin in training here. This particular scene took place some five years before the start of the game.

A WIP sketch for a scene in the Diviner Temple.

<3 I couldn't resist throwing her into a suit.

Once I invest in a graphics tablet ( I'm aiming to get one around May or so ), then I can really start churning out some high-level art and image stills. Then again, Tristian and Ianna are so bloody gorgeous, I'm going to find it hard to do justice to them. ;_;

As for a demo, I was thinking along the lines of a new, interactive introduction scene, which goes a bit like this:

It shows Tristy and Ianna escaping from Castle Genoa, fending off a couple of Valthorme soldiers and cultists, then coming face to face with one of the antagonists in the game, before Tristian pulls Ianna onto her horse, and they both flee while purple flames engulf the entire castle. And leaves Tristy with an immense sense of grief and guilt as she leaves her soldiers to die.

As for what I'm aiming to do with this new demo, it should give the player a taste of the battle mechanics, and it should aim to pull them into the game with a combination of snappy writing, custom visuals and more new songs. The new title theme is fittingly called 'Heal Me' and is an absolutely beautiful piece by the same artist I used for some of Enelysion's music, greendjohn.

At least, that is what I aim to do. XD

Damn, that battle scene if F-ed up now. It looks like a Hellraiser movie swept through. Also, I really like the ironic lush greenery of the forest.

In other news, your spriting is still awe-inspiring :O
Never thought of the irony while making that scene. XD And quite frankly, a burning/burnt forest is a tad clichéd for a war zone/scene. Besides, it was raining. Personally, it sets the mood of a map better for me.

As for sprites, I finished Ianna's last night ( and being sleep-deprived on top of it ) and will probably do some ladder-climbing sprites for Tristian. Since it would look extremely weird if I used her normal walking sprite as she ascends/descends a ladder. I'll probably study some of CT's/FF6's sprites as well for some more ideas.

I just wish my writing was improving as fast as my spritework. *le sigh*

You're magical to me.

I hear you. Writing is really hard, and one of my areas where I need a lot of work. ;_;

You're graphics look great, tho :DDDD

Isn't rain just as cliche for a war zone? I mean, it's a war zone. It's like there's going to be rainbows and puppies around. Don't worry about cliches, just make the scene you want to make.

As for the sprites, they look cool for the most part, although Tristian's leg seems to be a bit wonky in the east/west walking animations.

I'm excited about the new demo, though! I'm really interested in seeing the changes from the last one. Will it be retreading the same areas just with that new intro? Or will it be an entirely different setting?
Ah yes. Cliches only become bad when they're used poorly. ^^ But 90% of most RPGs use them in some way or the other. I mean, I'm not a developer who tries to break new ground or do something revoluntionary. I just like taking tried and tested formulas and seeing how much I can get out of it. =) When the player fires up Tristian one of these days ( sometime in 2016 for the full game ), I want them to feel as though they're playing an unreleased game from the SNES-era, commonly referred to as the 'Golden Era of JRPGs'.

As for the new demo, new setting, but it still takes place in the very beginning of the game. Since there may be some new players who haven't managed to get their hands on the demo, I think it is best to introduce them to the scenarios that propel Tristian and Ianna forward into their journey. As well as the antagonists who try to make hell for them both.
Hmm, I don't think the side walking animations are going to work out. Do they line up like this?

Admittedly, I don't entirely understand how her outfit works, but it seems like she's putting her legs in the same position for both step frames (near leg forward, far leg back). In the frame where her close arm is swinging behind her, the leg bending back also needs to be pushed back some more. The armor piece on the thigh (is it a "tassel"? I don't really know the terminology) also shrinks a pixel or two too much vertically?
(Also, the dead soldiers look like they were improperly resized?)

On the art, it seems like you need to be more careful to make sure that the center line of the face goes straight down. With some of those pictures, and some of the cutscene art in Enelysion, the features of the face seem to recede or shift to the side as they go down.

Otherwise, I like the style overall. It makes me think of some 70s and 80s anime. And it's nice that you're going through the effort to give characters some poses. Too many commercial games don't even do that!
Yes, I made a booboo when making Tristian's sprite with regards to her sideview walking sprite. I've since fixed up her leg, but I still need to switch the frames around.

Seems that VX doesn't handle realistic sized sprites very well, because of the 3 frame animation ( compare XP, which has 4 ) but I'll just have to sprite around it and make the animations appear less wonky.

And the art isn't mine if you're referring to the portraits. XD But I still need to brush up on that as well if I ever want to make some gorgeous image stills for the game. Alas, so many skills to perfect. Guess that's why I love gam mak so much.
