What is Pokémon S.T.A.R.?

Pokémon S.T.A.R. is simply Pokémon re-imagined as an Action RPG. Many of the elements of Pokémon you know and love are still there, while some features were added/dropped depending on what the developers thought worked best. Pokémon S.T.A.R. is HTML5-based and was made with Construct 2.

The aim of Pokemon S.T.A.R. is to recreate Pokemon as a fast paced, action RPG. In order for fans of the series to have an easier time with the game, many systems for the mainline series will be re-imagined with utmost care in an Action RPG fashion. EVs/IVs/Traditional Leveling/Evolving/Stats are all featured in the game, most of the battle algorithms have been faithfully recreated in S.T.A.R.

What's the difference between Heroes and Adventures?

"Heroes" uses the battle system created for Pokémon S.T.A.R in a mission-based arena. In "Heroes," rather than train Pokémon and explore, the player is only tasked with fighting battles using the provided Pokémon. This offers a unique set of challenges to the player while eliminating aspects of Pokémon outside of battle.

Naturally, those who enjoy the adventure of Pokémon should look towards Adventures. It will be a full-fledged RPG using the same battle system in Heroes. However, it will be fleshed out to incorporate the trainer, trainer battles, wild Pokemon, dungeons, gyms, and all manner of other things. This games' development will be more intensive, and can't fully start until the battle system in Heroes is perfected.

Key Differences Between Mainline RPG and STAR

  • Stat buffs/nerfs last for a period of time, since "battles" and "turns" are more loosely defined.
  • Accuracy and Evasion are no longer factors and depend on player skill. All moves that change those stats now change a new stat called Stamina.
  • Moves no longer have PP, and instead use a common Stamina Pool.
  • As an action game, the player cannot rely solely on traditional advantages such as type or level.
  • There is no multiplayer, but there will be leaderboards for players to match their progress against other's around the world.

Engine
These game is designed to run on Chrome, but it should work with IE and Firefox. I like having it browser-based so that updates can happen without the players having to do anything, but I'm also considering downloadable versions of each major update. This game is being made with Construct 2 and is HTML5 based.

pokemon has never been my type of game, altough this one seems nice ^^~

it's different in gameplay and doesn't look I dunno, repetitive~? not sure really ((not to offend any pokemon fans either)), i'll give it a try when it's out of beta, so is it going to be played on browser~?
Yeah, it's a browser based game. I might make every major version update downloadable though.

EDIT: Oh, I misread your comment about repetition, sorry!
I think the thing that makes almost any action RPG look and play repetitive is not being able to strafe backwards. If you want to get some distance from your opponent you need to give him your back and you can't attack. You end up running in circles the whole time, which can be seen in your video. Being able to keep the target on them and move away would be pretty amazing.

This looks really cool, but that one fact basically ruins it for me. I've played my share of amateur ARPGs and they all get annoying fast.
Thanks for the constructive criticism! That's a feature that was definitely over-looked. I added strafing since reading your post, which can be accomplished by pressing and holding shift. Naturally, being hit will knock you out of your strafe but generally this will help you keep your target on your foes.
Cool. I'll look forward to trying this. Better update that trailer gameplay to reflect the strafing. I think it will show the game in a better light.

Any demos/testing in the near future?
The demo testing has been going on for the past week or so on two different forums. I didn't really get much feedback, tbh.

Pokemon Heroes is coming out on Saturday, starting with about 25 missions and 13 Pokemon. New missions and mons will be added overtime, and potentially new features.

I'm probably not going to update the trailer, since the nature of the game is that it'll be constantly improving, but I will put out "How to Play" videos demonstrating techniques and features.
Hi it looks good!!
Were could I download it?
Thanks!!
I'll put the link up on Saturday. It's a browser-based game so you won't have to download it.
So basically, for someone like me who doesn't have internet at home & has to come to a library computer & download everything to a flash drive then transfer to my computer at home, wouldn't be able to play this?
I'm going to put up downloadable versions, but they'll only be released for major updates. As in, if I notice a typo I can change that for the browser-based version, but I won't put up a new download unless I add some major form of content.

Because I expect a lot of feedback after the first public release on Saturday, the first downloadable version will probably come out a week after.

If you send me a copy, you'll get plenty of feedback
This looks so cool! Can't wait for the first release (which should be today?).

It should be up now. It would've been up 4 hours ago if dumb issues din't come up.
The game is nice ^^~ I haven't finished all battles yet but I liked the environmental thing ((or however typed)) like using gust on water will trow bubbles ~

altough an auto-save instead of manual wold be nice, after a while, my game turns into a white screen saying "what browser am I using?" and I couldn't cancel that so I lost all my progress until previous save

2 small questions:

1.- aside leaderboards and updates, will there be or is a difference between downloaded and browser version~?

2.- Will the game feature an account-save or similar instead of cookies~? I don't think its a good idea to add a leaderboard on a game that is saved on cookies ((due to it being easily-deleted))

I have no problems with the game so far, ecept you get hit, you are invincible for a second, but you still can't move, and when you can move you get hit again, I think your character should be invincible a little more than your stagger.

EDIT: Almost forgot~! you should add the browser link somewhere in the description, you can only click the download button once every 15 minutes, so if you click and close it by accident, you can't do it again until 15 minutes have passed.

MORE EDIT: the stagger thing was just me being blind sorry, i'll leave that unedited though

Thanks for the feedback.

1. I've added an auto save that will show up in the next version, good idea!
2. There shouldn't be too much difference between the browser and downloadable version other than what you mentioned.

The leaderboard will be handled by Kongregate, so it will be on their servers and will be using their GUI.

I'll take what you said about hit stun/invincibility into consideration, thanks.
ohh if its by kongregate then I know how it will be, then I guess its fine if save files stay as cookies ~

I play it from the official site, as I open it, it starts downloading the update, once finish it says UPDATED, PLEASE REFRESH and after I refresh, it starts downloading it again, I don't think its suppose to do that ~ I made sure i'm not blocking anything from the site to
As long as the version number in game matches the one at the top, you should be fine.

I'm trying to make it so that at the least, the update thing goes away though.

I choose you... potion?

So this is either a placeholder or a bug.

Edit: Also, you forgot the 'to' in 'which Item you want buy'. And technically, item and purchase shouldn't be capitalized.

Edit²: I've played for a while, and it feels like stunlocking is a bit too easy. Also, having more than one Pokémon in your team while your enemy is alone makes the whole ordeal a bit silly, since you can't really get to the enemy that easily any more.

Also, Bulbasaur is overpowered.
Thanks for pointing those out. The item message is a bug, there's a generic confirmation window that's supposed to be used, not the team one.

There's still work to be done with stun, one of the major problems being invincibility when you first take damage to avoid being combo'd, but not any at the end to give you time for a reversal.

Bulbasaur probably has one of the better movesets, yeah. No one else can heal at least. I'm probably going to nerf Leech Seed and make the size of Vinewhip be scaled to the user's level.
I just played the little cup and it was no fun at all.
First of all an attack does about 5 damage but it seems every pokemon has about 1000 HP ... Why?

I also don't like the stun effect after every hit you get.

And the stamina system is also something which makes the game slow. After you did an attack you just can run around and wait for your stamina.
Maybe you'll make some attacks like tackle usable without stamina so you can fight on during waiting for your special skills.

I like the idea of this game and ofcourse I also like Pokemon. But in my opinion at the current state of the game there ist to less action or rather there are some points which makes the battlesystem slow.

I apologize for my bad english and I'm looking forward to the next version.
This game has a great potential afterall.
