The rope winds from the clouds like the long-dried trail of a giant's tear. It whips in the arid wind, down the birdless sky, and into the open mouth of the ravine that splits the dead land. Down and down it goes, the sky darkening to a pinpoint of light above it. This is the sky that Ivy knows.

Ivy and her sister, Mint, peer further into the ravine. It has been one day since their father stopped moving. A dandelion sprouts from the parched earth like hands clasped together in prayer. It is the only living thing they've seen in this dead world. A growl echoes off the cliff walls. Maybe not the only thing.

Sometimes Ivy dreams of a sky that covers everything. When she awakes, she hates herself for still having the dreams of a child. She's fourteen, now, her sister twelve. The rope stretches up above them, up, up, up, further than young eyes can see.

Major Update

I've been hinting here and there about wanting to update A Very Long Rope, and I finally got off my ass and did it. I made quite a few changes, and I'll list them below, but I want to talk about the most major one in depth. When I made A Very Long Rope, my goal was to make a game with a strong story, and a lot of the other aspects got brushed aside. This was going to be my way to segue into the community and hopefully find some other people interested in working together. Since then, I've shifted my perspective and focused more on things like design and aesthetics, which this game doesn't really care much about, unfortunately.

So, the update. The chief annoyance I've been hearing about A Very Long Rope is the dungeon design--mainly, levels are way too big, and the random encounters serve to make things worse. So, this update adds an item to your inventory that toggles enemy encounters. This item was available in the game before, but the only way to get it was to beat the game (players who have done this know I'm talking about the saecelium shield). Now, this item is given to the player at the very beginning, meaning you don't have to fight a single random encounter anymore.

Of course, since bosses exist, you'll still need to gain experience. In order to incentivize getting a good amount of experience before each boss, I've made several treasure chests need a currency called "victory points" in order to open them. Basically, you get a single victory point for every enemy you defeat in a battle (other than bosses). Victory points are dependent based on the dungeon, so the ones you earn in the first dungeon will only work in that dungeon. The cost of opening chests is higher depending on what's inside the chest, so you might need to spend between 2-6 points in order to open each of these special chests.

I've also doubled the experience, gold, and item drops from monsters. The net effect here is that if you open every single locked chest, you'll end up fighting about half of the encounters that you would have if you just left random encounters on. I did a full playthrough and felt that these locked chests provided short-term goals that kept me more interested while exploring; I hope they do that for you, too!

Here's the full list of changes:

-Reduced crit damage from triple to double
-Stat cap increased to 9999 (will mainly affect buff stacking)
-Berserk no longer sucks
-One-touch Sprint
-First agricultural upgrade requires three people instead of five.
-Escape rate now a flat 60%
-Added a way to get out of the Goddess Tower if you don't have a portable transceiver
-Fixed a few typos/graphical glitches/small things I don't remember
-Rare drop rates have been increased significantly
-Gold/XP/Drop Rates doubled
-Findable equipment that could be used in recipes is now sold as recipes in your town along with the regular recipes.
-Saecelium Shield now added at the beginning of the game. Players can use their old data and find a Saeclium Shield in a number of places within a blue chest (such as the entrance to your town, on the world map, or next to the save point in Old Town); the blue chests will disappear upon opening one.
-Most chests are now "locked." Gain Victory Points from defeating random mobs in a dungeon to open locked chests. Victory Points are specific to each dungeon.
-Locked chests are weighted based on how good the item is. 2 VP is a potion, 3 VP is gold, a good potion, or monster mats, 4 VP are great potions and large sums of gold, 5 VP are stat-boosting items or rare monster mats, 6 VP are equipment.
-Chests that aren't near easy grinding spots (e.g. chests in certain puzzles, chests in towns) will never be locked. Several other random chests in dungeons will also not be locked.
-Arena fights now give experience
-Can now use saecelium shield during soul tear scenes
-Only need to find the wolf four times instead of nine (what was I thinking?!) in Marina's soul tear scene.

That's it! Oh, and make sure to subscribe to my new project: Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass.

Ah, at this point I'm worried I won't be able to make a Yggdrasil Bow, seeing how I don't have the Ankleshot for Magical Tree Staff Sacred Bow and the Magical Princess and True Shot for Magic Bow, Or a Great Defender since I can't make a Heavy Spear without another Estoc :( may have used them all up. but Yeah, I'll probably clear the bonus stuff first, thank you.

Edit: Also, is Atomize fire or neutral?
@Citric

I think Atomize is Neutral. Try it on a Discovery Orb or something that is Fire Immune and it still works... I think... It could be Dark though, given the source...

Oh man, Rusty Nails or Goblin Arms!

For Chaos Fights, I was thinking Anti-Dark kit all the way, with anti-debuff and/or High DEF, like Everything's Okay, and Fading Memory and some of the 150000G Dresses from Sanctuary.

I think stopping Chaos's attacks is best, so you can do a Death of a Thousand Spells without worrying too much about health.

I'm so glad the Chaos Boss doesn't heal, so we can take a breather and heal up if needed.

With healers, you've got lay on the damage turn after turn so they don't undo all your hard work...

And of course, stock up on consumables! :)

...

How much health does a Whirring Mechanism have?! 100,000, I guess? Its' damage is highly irritating! Expert Arena is Boss Level! What's the recommended level to face it?

How many sermons are there for each of the different (pastors?) I'm trying to see all of them but I'm not sure when to stop for each pastor...

If Jynx is in her 40s, did we see her before the time-skip?

Could I have been trapped on top of Mother's Tower by not having the Transceiver by not talking to the Transceiver guy all game long?

How much specifically anti-Holy kit is there? Is it just the Robe of the Lamb and everything in its crafting chain?

***************************IMPORTANT!!*************************************************IMPORTANT!!*************************************************IMPORTANT!!*************************************************IMPORTANT!!**********************

Is it me, or are Giant Feather Cs unsellable?
Jynx is in the town office before the timeskip, she's probably in her 50s, she just says "40s" to make herself more desirable?
@Malandy:
-Citric's right about Jynx.
-Whirring Mechanisms have 60k hp. Expert Arena is pretty much endgame, comparable to the secret bosses.
-Three sermons per pastor.
-You can jump off the tower. There's actually a couple of treasures there. I guess if you didn't have the portable transceiver, you could get stuck at the boss, though, so maybe I'll add a way out before that.
-Robe of the Lamb is the only holy-specific resistance gear. There is a number of multi-element resist gear, though.
-Yeah, looks like I forgot to put a price on those feathers. I'll fix that in the next update.
What happened to all the other witches? Did they all die?

When did St. Mathias get burned alive? I thought only the Witch of Balfur did stuff and the other just stayed by herself, and they didn't meet up again until the time of the story...

So the pastor doesn't know about the witches? I would have thought the religious people would at least notice the connection to the legends...

How do I get the Death scene? Is it not from the pastors? I'm gonna talk to others to see if I'll get it...

Oh! Nox preaches too!

I totally didn't do the gravedigger thing until now! That is a great way to grind!

I guess the 4 Winds Fortress is an equivalent thing for the common mobs. While it would be nice to have a teleport to the where the doors start, it's not like it's hard to get to.

I've killed... oh... 20+ Red Fangs and no Fire Dragon Skull... Is that normal?

Liliths drop Spirit Nuts, Punisher Demons drop Attack Nuts, as Rare Drops...

Does every non-boss monster have a secondary drop or only some monsters?
@Malandy:

-I think I covered this in some of the library dialogue and/or Prim and Mag's soul tear scenes, but they only are born very seldomly to normal parents, and there is normally only one born at once. Prim and Mag are twins, though, so they're an exception.
-I don't have Mathias factored into the time line exactly; I was mainly just having Mag act a bit witchy. They've both had long lives, so I'm sure they could work that in.
-Lucas is relatively naive.
-That's normal; the rate is 1/35, which I should probably drop down now that I think about it.
-Only some monsters have secondary drops.
Is there a way to counter the 9999HP Death other than just guarding and having enough health?
Nope; that's supposed to be an unavoidable single party member death.
Does Double Attack override ATK Down? I'm using Rough Customer + Rusty Nails on Mint, in that order.

Forgot that I had Phase Claw instead of the Nails...

How is Mint's Level on New Game+ determined?

What happens if I use 2 Rough Customers at once? Quadruple attack? Triple Attack? Just double attack?

I don't think you're going to notice this in time, so I'll figure it out myself.

...

It seems that Mint's Level is an average of the highest and lowest levels of the pre-new-game party...

(Sincere!)

Thanks for all the help!

(/Sincere!)

In the Central Research Database, on the Lowest Level, the Space Station Info Crystal, the one at the top of the screen, has it's first set of text repeat once before getting to the main message...

...

The last Elder God that I can fight... What are the Vacant Souls for? Distractions? Does are they summoned from HP or something? Is it me? Or does he seem easier than the Mother?

Typo: 'inexcusable' is 'inexecusable' when Mint's being treated by Dr. Issac.

Wait... Cyril's supposed to use shields? I have no shield for him to use and I have a lot of shields! Or is it intended for him to just use staves?
I'm sure this has been asked before, but is anything permanently missable? TV Tropes doesn't say anything on the subject but they have disappointed me before. I'm specifically wondering about about the possibility of unique equipment being used in more than one recipe, as I don't want to accidentally screw myself out of an ultimate weapon just because I, say, used up the Cannon of the Mechanical Girl on low-level junk. Also,

The general's tower in Balfur. I didn't fight my way through the whole thing because I wanted to wait until I had a full party, but now Ivy says she's "never going back there" so, um, oops? Or can I go back there later?

The random encounter rate is maddening, by the way. I am extremely glad you did something different for The Heart Pumps Clay.
Yeah, you can use up special equipment in recipes, but the game has a new game+ feature, so you can get that stuff again, anyway. As for a single playthrough run, there are four missable items, and you'll be able to get better equipment than them, anyway, so they're not something worth worrying about:

Those items are Mint's Cloak, Amos's Book, Jr. Bandit Badge, and Cupid's Bow. You can go back to Balfur later in the game, so no worries there.

And, yeah, the encounters/level design are the two biggest issues with the game. Generally, I made levels way too big, and, compounded with random encounters, it can be pretty taxing.
I just started playing this very nice RPG and I am very happy so far.The puzzle are enjoyable and tricky for sure. I am stuck in Old Avishun right now.

Check out screenshots

1st Screenshot: I cannot open doors right now. Do I need a key or is there a hidden switch somewhere?
2nd screenshot: How to get to this chest?

I did find a secret entrance and found a:
Rare Crystal

Very nice RPG. Looking forward to the challenge of this RPG.

Thanks RPGeez
Glad you're liking it! The door in your first screenshot won't be able to get opened for quite a while, so don't worry about it for now. And, as it happens, that door leads to the chest in the second screenshot.
Thanks for the help.

I assume this RPG is fairly non-linear at some point because I have the Keys of North and South Winds which I have not used yet. I would like to revisit a few areas because I missed a few chests for sure.

Also the story is quite good and the dialogue too. So far Yvette is my favorite character. Looking forward to recruiting new characters and of course the crafting system is a great addition. I am grinding trying to collect as much of each item for that purpose. I have played many RPG's and this one so far is pretty hard and the puzzles are clever and sometimes a little frustrating which I actually enjoy.

Cheers RPGeez
I am trying to get past the flames without any luck. I know there is a chest there.
Does anyone remember if it is worth getting? Thanks alot.

Also how to beat Darius in OLd Avishum? He is one tough enemy for sure.

There's just a possessed lumber and an ultra mana potion, both of which you can buy from your town later. I realized I kind of went all mad scientist on that puzzle, so you don't have to do that one if you guess the last value of that code.

Best advice for Darius: just go back to him later. If you're at that temple now, you'll get some skills and equipment soon that will make that fight a lot easier.
Hey Housekeeping

Thanks for the help.

I was able to defeat Darius after visiting the Reflecting pond and using the soul tears. I liked seeing all the characters stories by the way. Nice part of the the RPG

Now to beat the expert arena challenge.

EDIT:I just realized I do not have Brunhilde's soul tear.

I used Odd Thing map 4. Now to find a way to unfreeze him. I guess I need recruit Clovis. He keeps saying "Keep training and you'll surpass me"

Cheers RPGeez
Started this up again after a break. Just finished the temple with all the fire jets.

It's kind of amusing to me that Yvette is the best healer, the best mage, and the best physical attacker.
Only against physicals. And even then she's close to Gainer. She can tank magic all day long.
