The rope winds from the clouds like the long-dried trail of a giant's tear. It whips in the arid wind, down the birdless sky, and into the open mouth of the ravine that splits the dead land. Down and down it goes, the sky darkening to a pinpoint of light above it. This is the sky that Ivy knows.

Ivy and her sister, Mint, peer further into the ravine. It has been one day since their father stopped moving. A dandelion sprouts from the parched earth like hands clasped together in prayer. It is the only living thing they've seen in this dead world. A growl echoes off the cliff walls. Maybe not the only thing.

Sometimes Ivy dreams of a sky that covers everything. When she awakes, she hates herself for still having the dreams of a child. She's fourteen, now, her sister twelve. The rope stretches up above them, up, up, up, further than young eyes can see.

Major Update

I've been hinting here and there about wanting to update A Very Long Rope, and I finally got off my ass and did it. I made quite a few changes, and I'll list them below, but I want to talk about the most major one in depth. When I made A Very Long Rope, my goal was to make a game with a strong story, and a lot of the other aspects got brushed aside. This was going to be my way to segue into the community and hopefully find some other people interested in working together. Since then, I've shifted my perspective and focused more on things like design and aesthetics, which this game doesn't really care much about, unfortunately.

So, the update. The chief annoyance I've been hearing about A Very Long Rope is the dungeon design--mainly, levels are way too big, and the random encounters serve to make things worse. So, this update adds an item to your inventory that toggles enemy encounters. This item was available in the game before, but the only way to get it was to beat the game (players who have done this know I'm talking about the saecelium shield). Now, this item is given to the player at the very beginning, meaning you don't have to fight a single random encounter anymore.

Of course, since bosses exist, you'll still need to gain experience. In order to incentivize getting a good amount of experience before each boss, I've made several treasure chests need a currency called "victory points" in order to open them. Basically, you get a single victory point for every enemy you defeat in a battle (other than bosses). Victory points are dependent based on the dungeon, so the ones you earn in the first dungeon will only work in that dungeon. The cost of opening chests is higher depending on what's inside the chest, so you might need to spend between 2-6 points in order to open each of these special chests.

I've also doubled the experience, gold, and item drops from monsters. The net effect here is that if you open every single locked chest, you'll end up fighting about half of the encounters that you would have if you just left random encounters on. I did a full playthrough and felt that these locked chests provided short-term goals that kept me more interested while exploring; I hope they do that for you, too!

Here's the full list of changes:

-Reduced crit damage from triple to double
-Stat cap increased to 9999 (will mainly affect buff stacking)
-Berserk no longer sucks
-One-touch Sprint
-First agricultural upgrade requires three people instead of five.
-Escape rate now a flat 60%
-Added a way to get out of the Goddess Tower if you don't have a portable transceiver
-Fixed a few typos/graphical glitches/small things I don't remember
-Rare drop rates have been increased significantly
-Gold/XP/Drop Rates doubled
-Findable equipment that could be used in recipes is now sold as recipes in your town along with the regular recipes.
-Saecelium Shield now added at the beginning of the game. Players can use their old data and find a Saeclium Shield in a number of places within a blue chest (such as the entrance to your town, on the world map, or next to the save point in Old Town); the blue chests will disappear upon opening one.
-Most chests are now "locked." Gain Victory Points from defeating random mobs in a dungeon to open locked chests. Victory Points are specific to each dungeon.
-Locked chests are weighted based on how good the item is. 2 VP is a potion, 3 VP is gold, a good potion, or monster mats, 4 VP are great potions and large sums of gold, 5 VP are stat-boosting items or rare monster mats, 6 VP are equipment.
-Chests that aren't near easy grinding spots (e.g. chests in certain puzzles, chests in towns) will never be locked. Several other random chests in dungeons will also not be locked.
-Arena fights now give experience
-Can now use saecelium shield during soul tear scenes
-Only need to find the wolf four times instead of nine (what was I thinking?!) in Marina's soul tear scene.

That's it! Oh, and make sure to subscribe to my new project: Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass.

Please feel free to ask for more detail elsewhere; I wasn't sure what to put down.
Okay, wow, that's a lot of information! Let's see...

-Give the Magical Princess to Yvette. That'll be a substantial spirit increase.
-If Yvette's dying too much, give her those rubber gloves.
-Oliver's weak to electricity, and you should have EMP Generator on Gainer, which might be a better option than snipe.
-Gainer's aura will heal everyone's paralysis if things get dicey.
-You might want to go halfway and give Gainer a robe and spirit hat to make him an okay healer when soul engine's on him. It's too bad you don't have any bows.

Let me know if this is enough. You should be able to do this, but I'll run a test battle and make sure if you're still having trouble. Whenever you make it out, you should probably go through some side quests; you're missing a lot of skills that would be a big help, including a better group heal for Yvette and a stronger physical single target ability for Ivy.
Oh, wow, ok! I didn't know that
Oliver was weak to electricity
. I would have thought that
as an android, he'd be shielded from it and might even get healed by it
. That'll make the fight substantially easier! Thanks!

EDIT: What about
water? Is he weak to that too?
@pthariensflame: im just curious that every time u ask for a passage. is it ur 1st time to play this kind of rpg?

Yep, he's weak to water, but since you don't have spirit gear on Gainer, I didn't mention it. If you did, Leviathan hurts him pretty bad. I tried to put logic behind elemental weaknesses. Since he's a machine, he can produce electricity, but too much electricity would fry his circuits, haha.
Kasey Ozymy, do you hav any game besides a very long rope to the top of the sky?

Basically, yes. :)

I've played RPGs before, but not many, and this is of a style that I'm not generally familiar with. Perhaps that ruins the enjoyment somewhat, but I only ask because I actually have trouble; I haven't asked for any of the several bosses in between the couple that I've needed help on, nor the many, many bosses before
the Crystal Beast
. :P

He's made The God of Crawling Eyes, but it's in a different style (I didn't like it anywhere near as much as I do A Very Long Rope, but that's just because I'm not a big fan of horror games).
Yep, what pthariensflame said. The God of Crawling Eyes is a short horror game I did for a contest last October. I'm working on another game that's going to be a more condensed RPG experience, but it's still pretty early in development and this is the busy time of the semester. I'll probably put up a game page for it sometime in summer.
@pthariensflame: i see...

@kasey: if u are working for another rpg, would you mind if i try some alpha/beta test of it? where did u gonna put the game? ur rpg game is a whole new level, it is really new in my eyes after i played diff kind of rpgs plus the graphics, arts, outlines are outstanding. (compared to ff 1-6) do u hav a team on doing this? specialy how do u make the bgms? and are you a girl? :D because its amazing how u made this game
@Mizushimi LOL!

@Housekeeping Yeah, I'm still stuck, although
giving Yvette the Magical Princess
got me a few rounds farther.
Oddly enough, Snipe still does far more damage to Oliver than EMP Generator, even with Soul Engine active.
@pthariensflame: so jealous to you. you came that far! :D cant play w/o recording :D too much excitement will kill youuuuu. but thats ok. i think im helping others by making a video about it.

You're certainly helping me, since I can't hear the soundtrack when I play. :P
oh i see, thats why u ask on my yt's channel, lol and yeah, i think my videos' soundtrack is a big problem as it was nearly mute. so i increased the volume since epi 14, say, how is it going?

It's going great! I'm glad you didn't have as much trouble with
the Burrowers
as I did; the nerf looked really helpful.
Alright, I did a test battle.

It's possible, but there are two things that are going to make this fight hard. 1) If Oliver spams EMP Generator, eventually you could find yourself in an awful situation. 2) You don't have any high mp pots for some reason. You can make due with what you have, but that means you'll need to use some elixers with Leif.

-Have Ivy cross slash every turn and heal in a pinch.
-Have Gainer buff Yvette with soul engine, then himself. If everyone's at full hp and him and Yvette have soul engine active, have him snipe. If people have lost less than around 1200 hp or are paralyzed, he should be healing with aura. Make sure that you keep the spirit buff up on him and Yvette; this means you might have to cast it twice in a row if they've been debuffed by phase shifter.
-Yvette should be casting lightning hammer every turn. If Gainer's paralyzed and people need to be healed, cast vitalize with her.
-Leif should shout Ivy, then Gainer. If a single person is missing a little bit of life (less than EMP Generator can take), have him use a high potion. Whenever someone gets low on MP, have him recover it. If he has nothing else to do, throw an attack out or something.

That's the strategy I used. I only tried one test battle since I need to start working soon, and I died. But, Oliver was really close to dying. He's got about 90k hp, and I lasted over 15 rounds before he EMP Generatored three times in a row. For the next update, I'll either make it to where you can leave or put someone in that can sell rings and pots. If you still can't beat him today, I'll get that update in tonight.

@Mizushimi: The graphics were mainly from RPG Maker VX's library, a program called facemaker, and an online character generator. I just assembled the tiles to make the maps (which are way worse than what a lot of people on this site can do). By doing this, though, I was able to make this game by myself, but it did take a year and a half to finish, then I've been doing little updates on it here and there for another year. I made all the music using PowerTab, then I would import it into Anvil Studio to add drums; these are both MIDI programs. I got Reason a while back, so now I can make MP3s that sound a lot better. Here's a few examples that may/may not end up in the new game:

https://soundcloud.com/a-very-long-rope/a-cocoon-throbbing-in-a-dead
https://soundcloud.com/a-very-long-rope/new-applications-of-quantum-1
https://soundcloud.com/a-very-long-rope/serotonin-flowers

I'll keep you in mind when I finish it if you want to do some testing for it. And, sorry to disappoint, but I'm just a guy with a unisex name. You can thank my parents for the confusion.

Thanks, Housekeeping! That's actually been a chronic problem for me in this game: the lack of mana potions and similar things by the time I get to the end of a dungeon.
It doesn't help that Oliver keeps using MP Vacuum and reducing Leif and Gainer to 0, where they can't possibly recover without potions.

I'll do my best with the information you've given me; I'd hate for the game to have to be dumbed down even further on my account. :(
On a different note, I can't stop listening to Boomerang. :) The whole soundtrack is incredible, even when played on its own. I may just have to make a cover of Cloud Farm; I'll see if I have time.
@kasey: is there any app that can read the avlrtttots's (ur game) graphics fast so that it can prevent from any map lags? wow, you're amazing, build ur own music games is such an incredible work!

btw, i cant see mint's and others avatar/character images on avlrtttots' files and folders, say, how does even work with the game? and i just think i need it by creating new thumbnails for epi 21-25.

apologies for mistaking your gender :D

@pthariensflame: yeah, getting burrowers nerfed really helps alot! but still, ivy dies so its not just weak as it is now. and i easily got out from logos-3 w/o knowing!
