Part I

-This review will be considerably more informal because of a big glitch I encountered and the fact that it is finals week and I don't think my normal level of detail is really necessary. Of course, part II will still be rife with spoilers and contain far more detail as it is intended for the dev.

On the whole, it's not a bad game by any means. It's also not a great game. I played it, generally enjoyed myself, and have no desire to go back and play again. I am, however, inclined to play further releases in this series, so there's that.
The world is developed very well, as in, VERY well. The characters are a little more hit and miss, but none are outright fumbled and some are pretty good. The story itself is pretty large-scale but not overwhelming, and while not a tale for the ages, it will get you from the start of the game to the end without any story-related 'why am I playing this game?' moments.

Combat is fairly standard RPGMaker fare adapted to a sci-fi setting. It works well enough, though could use a good deal of polishing by someone willing to run numbers. Many of the abilities have skewed costs or are simply not worthwhile, so the player will optimally end up using a small fraction of them just about all the time. It's not a deal-breaker, but cannot be called an asset.
Bosses tend to use copious amounts of AoE and have scripted events that trigger even more AoE, so that's kind of obnoxious. There's a very real shelf where you're either strong enough to beat the boss or you're not, regardless of your tactics...but, as stated earlier, you probably aren't playing the game for the combat.

Items are at first glance quite interesting as each weapon has a unique extra effect...but in the end, you're going to equip the one with the highest attack, so the extra effect is wasted since there's a clear progression of weapons. All of them can be bought stores, too. Same goes for armor, save one piece that I found. Of note, there are items that give huge amounts of resistance to certain elements. Bosses, as in every boss, tend to use a certain element almost exclusively. Thus, they get far easier just by equipping a certain cheap shield rather early in the game. Of note, one of the party members is weak to this element, so...sucks to be them.

I should note that, rather early in my game, I hit an umarked tile that transferred me into the semi-final dungeon. Thus, most things happened out of order and some things never happened at all. I was also way too weak when I fell in there, fought my way out, and was way too strong for everything else after.
What follows is a brief overview written directly after finishing the game, then part II which contains my notes taken during the ~7 hour playthrough. I imagine, when played it order, it goes a bit quicker.

-So that's done. I can't say I wasn't looking forward to it being over, though, I certainly enjoyed some moments along the way. The most fun was definitely the glitch drop into ABYSSUSS though and actually having to fight for my life. After that, it was either ATTACK SPAM or STRONGEST ABILITY SPAM, even in the final area. Characters get a lot of skills, yes, but mathematically there's no point to using most of them...

So combat is passable, but not great. That means the game is probably riding on its story/characters, no? Well, it's hard for me to judge that since I got warped around so hard, but the story seemed alright. The characters, on the other hand, were usually a bit flat. They had moments of discernable personality, though, and those were well-defined. In short, the characters were nothing to write home about, but they were mostly good enough. ADRIAL was super boring, though, and DARMEK/ERYN were rather one-dimensional. HESPER and SARLENE were good, ANKU was as well and TELRAN was okay.

There were a lot of sidequests and generally plenty to do along with a very detailed world that was expressed with excellence. While the writing was eh in general, it still managed to construct the place and give it substance. Interactivity was rather low, but, the job was done. The maps were also rather huge, but not so much that it felt like it took too long to get around, and they were well-made so to give a feeling that I was walking around in a big city or such.

Part II

-The game offers me a choice of NORMAL or CHALLENGING difficulty. I'm a wuss, so I choose CHALLENGING to compensate.

-I am offered a brief summary of past events. I accept. It takes 5 minutes and makes a decent amount of sense. It seems the writing is decent as well, even making proper use of 'you're.'

-The game starts and I see a cutscene of SOME GUY joining some military PROGRAMMe. One Rocky MONTAGE later and my mission log is updated. Twas a fairly good intro...got lots of information out quickly and without breaking the flow of the game. Wasn't too long, or too boring.

-In the first room, only one item responds to my requests for interaction, which is a bit of a missed opportunity.

-The story kicks off IMMEDIATELY. It is delivered fairly well, to boot.

-I get attacked by some SCARY SOLDIERS. They are not really a threat, though I realize that I do not have any base mp regen, because I have no mp, but Ammo. Interesting. For some reason, though, using FIRST AID consumes more ammo than any method of discharging my gun.

-Eryn suggests FLEEING. I scoff at this suggestion. It works out. Perhaps, in the future fleeing will be necessary, but it's definitely good not to make it absolutely necessary the first time it's mentioned.

-Somewhat cutscene heavy, though that's forgivable since it's still the beginning of the game. It does not, however, feel like the information being imparted is necessary for me to know just now. To be fair, though, the scenes are quite short still. There are a few minor typos, but nothing heinous.

-Thankfully, I'm given the option to save between cutscenes, just in case something were to happen like a LIGHTNING strike or an ACT of GOD.

-In town, I wonder about and find a little girl who I cannot talk to. Perhaps she is just being RUDE?

-I find a SHOP. There is a very persistent ROBOT SALESMAN, but he cannot work me. This does wonders to sell the setting, though.

-I find some ZOMBIE ELVES who need help with THUGS. We fight a few groups then are cornered by a BOSS. I SPAM ATTACK and TRIUMPH.

-It is interesting how the enemies remain on the map after being defeated. Gives the game a pretty unique feel and reinforces the atmosphere.

-I enter a new area with RANDOM ENCOUNTERS. They are all weak to ATTACK SPAM.
UPDATE: Maybe it wasn't a random encounter?
UPDATE2: Maybe it was?!?!
UPDATE3: I think they are set events, not random.
UPDATE4: Or both?!?!

-I find a PUZZLE involving some BUTTONS. I solve it before I figure out what's going on.

-The enemies hit for just under 10% of my character's hp and get one attack off per round. They generally survive only long enough to get one attack off. While it is a good idea to make the early section of a game easy, it does need to ramp up to the point where thought is involved so that the player tries out their skills and gets used to them.

-I am attacked by some sort of STARCRAFT. I SPAM ATTACK. I manage to beat it, though only ADRIAL is still standing, and he is a hit or two from DEATH.

-The town is large, but a helpful ROBOT gives me directions upon request. The city is apparently built in the air, above other parts of the city. Some well done parallax mapping accomplishes this feet rather nicely.

-I buy STUFF. Money is a little tight, but not too restrictive.

-I embark on a SIDE QUEST. I fought some GUY who is unarmored but eats BULLETS like they are CANDY. He is no match for my SPAM ATTACK though.

-I turn in the MED ROBOT sidequest and am given a reward, but it is never specified what the reward is.

-I find where AELON is but decide not to go in yet as I still need to find BATTERIES. After I walk out, I find myself in some UNDERGROUND base looking for LINETTE. The mobs here hit 4x harder than any others and don't take much in the way of damage. I fear I may have made my FINAL MISTAKE.

-Many of my attacks hit for NULL. The FEAR is REAL. Since people are being hit for 120% of their hp, I find out that I can switch party members mid-battle. COOL BEANS. Unfortunately, everyone dies.

-ADRIAL'S Concentrate ability seems rather off. Assuming crits do 200% damage, he will statistically break even over the duration of it. That means that in order to get any benefit out of the skill in terms of damage, he has to get lucky...and he's just as likely to get no benefit at all.

-HESPER'S Scan ability seems to always fail. Perhaps it doesn't affect non-robots? Would be nice to know.

-TELRAN'S Impact Shot ability doesn't seem to stun anyone ever. Of course, as I type this, it stuns an enemy for the first time.

-I manage to win a few fights and grab some armor from a chest in the area. Each fight has several people leveling up...surely, I shall be strong enough to move on someday.

-Should be noted that the combat system is fairly fun when there's an actual challenge, even if it does boil down to spamming weakpoint attacks and trying for statuses.

-HESPER'S Hack Enemy is supposed to have a 90% rate, but feels like it's much less. By default, LK reduces the chances of statuses landing, so perhaps the enemies have very high LK? At any rate, Hack Enemy has failed 4 times in a row this battle. If it is truly a 90% rate, that has a .01% chance of happening.

-Make that 5 times.
UPDATE: 6.
UPDATE: 7.
UPDATE: 8. Seeing as how hacking enemies is the only way to survive in this place and 4 party members are down, I brace myself for the worst. It comes. I have no clue why that ability suddenly became so unreliable.

-ERYN'S Alleviate claims to remove all debuffs from an ally, but does not remove confusion. Treat Ailments does, but until it is learned, there is no indication given that debuffs do not include statuses.

-I encounter the TRIPLE ENEMY spawn. HESPER begins eagerly failing her hacking attempts. I save myself some time and RESTART. Unfortunately, I get an ERROR. 'KHAS LIGHTING FX' line 292: RGSSError occurred. Disposed bitmap. I try to LOAD again and am successful.
UPDATE: This seems to happen when using F12 to restart, but only then.

-TELRAN'S Nimble Movement will do very little (~40% of the time it does nothing), assuming one attack is directed at him per round. If it's less than that, it loses even more value.

-I feel strong enough to EXPLORE and do so. I run into DEDRIC who I apparently know. Someone who is supposed to be in my party named DARMEK responds to him.

-At the time ANKU learns Efficiency, it will save exactly one ammo per special attack save for Bouncy Plasma, on which it will save 2. No ammo is saved on normal attacks. Ergo, since it costs 5 ammo to use, the user will only break even if they use no normal attacks at all and only benefit if they use Bouncy Plasma. Either it should save more ammo, or be learned later after some abilities that have higher ammo costs.

-Leech Beam sorely taxes the legitimacy of the world's rules. I mean...how, exactly, would that work?

-I find an ELEVATOR. I fear the enemies will be even stronger down here. They ARE. I manage to hold my own, grab a few chests and get back to the start of the area to heal.

-Dedric shows up again. I end up locked into a room with a PUZZLE. I hit switches until the path clears, though again, I have no clue what was going on. It seemed like it was a 'guess the right order' deal. Not so much a puzzle as an obstacle.

-I grab more items and run back for healing.

-When HESPER uses Recycle Ammo, a notice saying +MP pops up.

-ADRIAL'S Counteract states that it will counter every enemy attack that isn't a Certain Hit. However, I can't really know which attacks that covers.

-I find an automated shop and manage to upgrade my weapons. I note there are items to teach any character First Aid or Instant CPR. This makes sense, given the world.

-While I haven't seen many weapons due to my unfortunate timeline hopping, it seems like each one has it's own unique feature to it. However, the attack for each steadily rises, so keeping a weapon for the unique feature is unlikely. Thus, instead of the player having several choices, they just get an added bonus that they can't really work around.

-Also, it doesn't seem like I'll have enough money to outfit the whole team, which is fine, though it makes the party shuffling business a little less exciting. Probably for the best, though, as balancing around the party switching if they were all fully outfitted would be a little crazy for someone trying to run with just a subset of the characters.

-I encounter a BOSS. Burn damage deals 625 to him, making it far more effective than anything else. Apparently, I'm either still way too weak or statuses are the only way to go. Also, since normal enemies take ~55 burn damage, I infer he has ~12x the hp. Since he just AoEed my party for ~50% of their hp in the first round, I begin whispering my prayers.

-The boss taunts me, then hits with an even more powerful AoE. I'm told by ANKU that setting her (that's a HER?!?) on fire only makes her stronger. Good advice, but everyone is about dead, so...

-Nevermind, got AoEed for 110% of my average party hp. Time to farm up for defensive items.

-The WEAPONS work wonders. Suddenly, SPAM ATTACK is effective again, though not so much that I can make it back to the ammo station without using skills.

-SARLENE'S Double Assault uses 4x as much ammo as a regular attack, while doing ~1.6x the damage and removing the ability to choose a target. Seems like way more COST than BENEFIT. TELRAN'S Twin Shot has a similar fate, doing 2x damage for 6x the ammo. Being able to choose the target is helpful, but...still off.

-I try the boss again. Unfortunately, every one of its attacks seems to be a powerful AoE. It also seems to get free, scripted attacks at certain hp intervals, so killing it quickly makes it kill my party more quickly. Doesn't help that, even with the best armor, it can still hit a 50% hp AoE. On top of that, the scripted events happen and strike before I can respond to them.

-It is not uncommon for the boss to dish out 3+ AoE attacks in a round. It is impossible to effectively mitigate the damage via healing, but dealing damage means even more pain. Seems like I just have to grind until the numbers don't hurt so much.

-Or I can buy the cheap shield that will cut the boss's damage by 50%.

-With the shields on, the boss is basically a joke. I spam everyone's strongest skill and call it a day. Hopefully, that's not how it was intended to happen...the binary nature of such an item as this shield aside, designing a boss that goes from impossible to mildly annoying in two fights worth of money is not good.

-Apparently, that was the semi-final boss.

-I am given the option to fly to the final area or 5 other locations that I have apparently visited before. I fly to a TOWN that starts with a G and look around. Most of the doors give no response, though there is a shop that is inferior to the one I found during my ORDEAL. I don't find anything to do in town and thus set out to leave, but cannot figure out how to take off.

-I go back into town and sneak into the FACTORY to do some thing that I have supposedly already DONE.

-I wonder where this DARMEK guy actually is and how I am supposed to actually get him into my party.

-I have no idea what INTELLIGENCE does, but I find an item to boost it a bit.

-Also, there's a room with a bunch of switches, but there's no thought necessary to traverse it. Just hit each switch as you come to it. One has to wonder what purpose such a room serves in the world, or the game.

-SARLENE'S rifle states that it consumes less ammo than most, though it still consumes the same amount of ammo, at least for an ability costing 9 ammo.

-The writing contains a fair amount of errors, though nothing that makes it hard to understand.

-In this new area, there is a shop outside. Later, a crate contains a weapon found in that shop. Generally speaking, it's best to put such crates before the shop to avoid situations where the player buys the weapon and then is forced to sell the extra.

-The enemies are a breeze since I've been doing the game out of order. Unfortunately, while breezing through, I hit a part where being detected means having to fight a lot of guards...wait, no, it means an instant GAME OVER. Even though any single member of my party could take every guard in the place.
This is an excellent example of how not to punish the player. Unless avoiding detection is an important theme of your game, do not make it a GAME OVER condition. Perhaps have them run back to some earlier area and force a fight, but flat out booting them out is a great way to ensure they won't come back.

-On the bright side, the game does a good job of warning the player before launching them into a boss fight or string of scripted battles.

-I finally get Darmek. He is level 8, while everyone else is level 20.

-After escaping PRISON, I see a hallway full of guards. Adrial remarks that it isn't 'such a good idea to good this way.' Whatever that means.

-I escape, and am escorted along to the next plot point or such.

-It seems I am helping SOMEONE to take back SOME PLACE that has been captured by ENEMIES. I see a bit of character development, which is nice, though I'm not sure how much of the lack of it I should attribute to my haphazard journey through the narrative. It is decently written, but in a very 'good enough' way. It is more or less exactly as expected, lacking in personal detail.
That is, the idea of what the characters are feeling is good, but the manner in which they are communicating it is flat. They all, more or less, sound like the same person expressing various feelings? Perhaps I shall be able to articulate it better later, but suffice to say that it is not bad, but not as well-developed as it needs to be to drive a story instead of merely setting up gameplay segments.

-I encounter a small maze with spouts of FLAMES. It seems to just be a timing thing since the pattern is regular, though it's odd that not every tile that can spurt fire, does spurt fire. It makes my trip take longer via a one-off mechanic that adds little but playtime to the game. Probably best not to bother.

-The enemies in this COSMOSIS place cannot be searched on death, unlike the others I encountered up to this point.

-I'm forced to add ANKU to the party for this part. Since I do not particularly care about ANKU, he has sub-par equips and has not seen the light of day outside of being wiped with everyone else after landing in the SEMI-FINAL dungeon right out of the gate.

-ANKU talks to MARS about stuff. It's all decently written, but devoid of freshness. There's no character to the speech and nothing that could not have been copy-pasted from elsewhere. That said, there is technically nothing new under the sun, but if you show off the old stuff then it better be character-driven. Without strong characters, it feels contrived, like it's built of whole blocks of stuff you've already seen. With them, it feels familiar but specifically important to the piece.
That said, perhaps there's a lot of character building that mitigates this somewhat, but I'm not sure how said building would translate into so much samey dialogue.

-To be fair, there are glimpses of characters speaking in character. Most of the lines are samey, but not ALL of them.

-It seems I've reached the point where I'm supposed to go to ABYSSUSS and rescue LINETTE, which is the semi-final dungeon that I got dropped into already.

-I'm dropped back into the town that I was in right before ending up in ABYSSUSS the first time. I still have basically no clue how that happened. I hit the shop, which seems to have updated it's items, and buy targeting systems for everyone to get rid of the annoying misses.

-I fight HALTON on a MOTORCYCLE. He complains about me judging him, though he has yet to explain himself and has attacked me twice. It is not a super interesting fight. He attacks, then uses an AoE once low. Since I'm way overleveled, there's no threat, but it's the sort of fight where either you're strong enough or you aren't...standard fare, perhaps, but it would take forever since he's a boss. After, some DUDE comes out and gives me some ARMOR, but doesn't tell me what armor it is. It's one of the types available in shops so I can't tell by looking at my inventory since it has random bits of armor everywhere.

-The POWER DOWN quest doesn't seem to complete in the missions log, though I'm sure finished the objectives and got the rewards.

-I go to HETTERN because I'm told some guy will sell me DRUGS there. At first, I am confused as I seem to end up in an area with no exit, then realize the lone exit is under an arch that looks suspiciously like a wall.

-I find an ARENA and commence WREAKING HAVOC. The first prize is an item I already have, given my skipping around. I think it's the best armor in the game, though, still shop fare. The second prize is a nice stat booster for one char.

-I fight the ARENA BOSS who seems to be immune to at least some statuses and, of course, attacks mainly with AoE. Mainly with the same AoE attack every enemy ever uses. At least it gives me a unique item as a prize, though, and a decent one at that.

-I can walk through one of the railings near BENHOR the NPC.

-I find the guy with the DRUGS. They're pretty cheap. I decline to buy any, though.

-I find a guy concerned about thieving ROBOTS. BENHOR responds to this when I talk to him, but neither of them gives me any clue where the hideout I'm supposed to find is.

-I scour the whole city and find an unmarked exit that leads eventually to the hideout.

-The ROBOTS have a lot of DRUGS strewn about, despite being unable to benefit from them.

-I travel through the area flipping switches to off, though I have yet to see the thing they affect. Simply, I see a switch, and assume I must interact with it.

-I encounter a PUZZLE. It's very simple, but perhaps just engaging enough to be worthwhile. That is, until I get to the BLUE part, which must be done before some other part or it is not possible to solve. Suddenly, the ENGAGEMENT/TIME ratio is torn asunder and the PUZZLE crosses over into frustrating territory.

-I backtrack to a solvable state and discover that the whole thing MUST be done in a certain order.

-I fight some ROBOTS and such, then get teleported out and am unable to return. I think I got all the chests, so, all is well.

-I like how, rather than a punctuation mark, the guy let me know he had a quest by running back and forth as if in a panic. It made it more enjoyable due to that extra bit of convincing.

-I find a BRON furniture shop that locks me inside and swears not to release me until I buy furniture. Oh dear. I DESTROY it.

-I find some furry creature terrorizing the city. I DESTROY it. I am given a reward, though there is no mention of what it is.

-I find a crime scene. It is still being investigated so its integrity must remain intact. I DESTROY it by pilfering an item off of the body.

-I find a building that is controlled by REBELS with very small heads. For some reason, ADRIAL has taken on a KJV accent for this section. I am rewarded with a GUN but am unsure just what GUN he gave me.

-I wonder how boosting muscles makes my guns shoot harder.

-I find the KILLER. TELRAN chases after her, which seems rather out of character for him. ADRIAL continues with his KJV speech.

-I get a CLIP EXPANDER which increases ammo. I rather wonder why I get more ammo on leveling up, then.

-I have no idea what the proper method to get into ABYSSUS is.

-I wander around in the same area and eventually wind up in ABYSSUSS again. It seems there is a tile that transfers me, though I don't think it's marked.

-Everything is all done, but when I get to the BOSS room, the convo triggers. Even though the BOSS is clearly lying dead in front of me. I kill the BOSS again.

-Oh dear...seems I have to watch these cutscenes again.

-Or not. Cutscene stops on a black screen. I can open the menu and save, but can't move or anything. Says I'm in SILBAN CUTSCENE 04.

-I reload an earlier file and go straight to the FINAL BOSS.

-This is a lot of fuss over a GOVERNMENT BUILDING that doesn't even have a real name.

-I encounter a PUZZLE with letters that is bound to be very TIME-CONSUMING. It's just grunt work though...minimum engagement.

-I fight the FINAL BOSS. HE does 3x more AOE damage by stomping than by using weapons. One of his attacks clearly states that he 'halves everyone's health.' Very informative, but...rather immersion breaking.

-The FINAL BOSS summons bots that heal him for 1,500 hp in a round. Even with my being overpowered, I do rather less than that. Not a terrible thing, though, since the bots can be killed and I assume do not respawn.

-The FINAL BOSS activates his 'emergency power up' system and proceeds to unleash more powerful AoE attacks and multi-hit nukes. He manages to actually take one of my party members down.

-I DESTROY him, eventually.

-Short ending scene sets up sequel without becoming boring or anything. Closure is pretty much done already so...very nice.

Thank you man for the in-depth review. I feel kind of ashamed I forgot to remove that transfer tile to the Abyssus. It sounds like it ruined the whole game for you. Though I wonder, how come you kept playing when you got accidentally transferred there instead of simply reloading a previous save? That could also explain why some story events didn't make sense to you and why some characters seemed to act out of character.

Looks like I'll need to release a quick update fixing that game-breaking issue.
I had a previous save file, but the idea of fighting enemies that required more than normal attacks was very enticing. It was, in all honesty, the point where the game really took off for me.

I suppose, I did it for the fun of it. Rather, to see if I could.

I wouldn't say it ruined the whole game for me either. I was ok with not understanding most of the story because I still had a sense of what was happening. If anything, it let me take an in-depth look at the combat system since I had to practically master it to get anything done. Perhaps it's just me, but I really, really, enjoyed making that Abyssuss run work.
Thanks. That makes sense. It sounds like you really wanted a challenge. I'll take this on board for my next project. Challenging difficulty will have to be even more challenging.
Well this is an odd review.

In Part 1 you tell us that the combat is decent at best, but you should be playing it for the storyline.

In Part 2 you don't so much as tell us about the story as much as you describe several snippets of your experience.

My question is, how does this help someone decide whether they should play this or not?
The story is pretty well outlined on the game summary page, so it seemed rather redundant to go too much into here. In terms of quality, I figured that if I said it should be played for the story, that would effectively give it all the endorsement it needed.

That said, I would have gone deeper into it if I had not encountered the since fixed glitch that caused me to experience the game out of order.

At any rate, the main goal of part II is giving the dev an in-depth look at a play-through in order to help them make adjustments as they see fit. Part I should be handling the 'should I play this or not' question. What kind of information on the story that is not found in the summary would you like to see there?
But the plot summary that a dev gives is basically like reading an instruction manual. It doesn't tell me how well the game turned out perse.
Sorry for the double post. the site is glitching pretty badly this morning.

But the plot summary that a dev gives is basically like reading an instruction manual. It doesn't tell me how well the story turned out perse. And you can do that without going into spoilers. There's countless reviews on this site that do just that.

Also, why couldn't you go into any real detail about the characters. Simply rating them tells me nothing as well. Nor do you really comment on the dialogue.

Honestly, the things that you went into detail on make me not want to play the game unless I'm really really really bored, and considering your rating, I would think that's not the message that you're trying to convey, but you didn't present it very well.
I went light on plot and characterization because I did not get to experience it in the proper order and thus couldn't give a full review. I was liable to be completely off because I saw everything out of order, so I kept it general enough that I could be sure of my assessment. I am not, however, doing another playthrough for the sake of giving a review of characters.

Since you asked, though, I can give a brief look at them...just know that they could be better than I say when seen in context.

The dialogue is fairly solid. It's not amazing, but it gets the job done and is amusing at times. Nothing sticks out about it, negative or positive, save for a few scenes that may be slightly overdone and a few characters that came across with a marvelously distinct voice.

The characters themselves are mostly interesting. We learn enough about them to see what shapes them, but it's not done via exposition dump so it's actually a fun experience. There are a few instances where they may act out of character, but those are few and far between; likely the result of a poorly communicated idea rather than author hijacking.

There are two outliers, however. The main character is very boring and one of the side characters (Hesper) is leagues more interesting than the rest.

As far as the plot goes, I really can't say much. It doesn't take too much suspension of disbelief to follow and appropriately ramps up over the course of the game. Gameplay is tied quite tightly to the story and thus does not feel meaningless at any point. There's nothing all that new, really, but the old material is competently handled here.
