Delightfully Simple

I'll try to play a couple people's entries, and hopefully it'll spread in some kind of pay it forward thing like Deckiller is hoping for.

-Story: I don't know what it is about Eric's face, but it's hard not to imagine him as kind of an idiot, so I definitely enjoyed his immediate characterization as such. The party members came out of nowhere, and it worked out enjoyably since it all seemed to have been the aftermath of an amazing/terrible drunken misadventure, which much to the party's dismay continued into the next day. The whole thing was so ridiculous that it worked, and I liked one or two of the jabs on old-school RPG scenarios and maps. I also liked the casual references to unused characters.

-Gameplay: No real complaints about the battle system itself. If you set up the interface in a week I'm genuinely impressed, though I know prior resources were permitted and likely. The last battle definitely could have been better though. I was expecting a little more than the standard physical/magic/sweep RNG battle when you went to all the effort to set up the custom battle display and add jokes to the items and attacks. It was also frustrating that the tank character was the best damage dealer. As for the exploring part, short and sweet, which I probably should have kept in mind myself. The default encounter rate was insane though, and there were quite a few boulders you had to find by guessing in the dungeon.

-Graphics/Sound/Atmosphere: I liked the creative use of the stored animations as enemy attacks on the party, as well as the dark and gloomy feeling of the swamp, and that you bothered to animate the water. The scrolling for airship movement was also well done. Sound-wise, I think I liked your slowed Battle 9 theme better than the original version. Also the intro screen and Eric's casual clothing sprite were great. No real complaints in this section.

Overall it seems like you rushed, but still accomplished what you were trying for. I haven't played anyone else's (except my own) yet, so I can't offer up a number score.

^This. My characters are mainly based on my impressions from their default database images. Brenda just looks angry and Terence looks completely stoned.

Agreed, the boss battle was the last thing I did so it was rushed quite a bit. I wanted to incorporate more dialogue into the fight, and include some more humour - I may still do this after the contest is over ^^.

Check out this awesome post by Makio-Kuta about another approach to the final fight ^^.

Agreed, which is part of the reason I added the encounter rate modifier. I felt like the random encounter rate needed to be spiked a bit in order to give the player enough experience for the final fight without having to grind, but I guess the grind ends up happening regardless ;w;

This was actually intentional - The puzzle seemed a bit easy otherwise ><;
I wanted to have some way of identifying where the boulders were, but didn't find the time to add it in.

Thanks so much for taking the time to both play my game and review it! I look forward to playing yours (once it finishes downloading ;w; can you upload it to rmn? XD)!
It's uploaded now that I have permission to do that :D.
