Promising, but too many flaws

Introduction

Succession is an RPG by Irili. It is about Noah, the king's adviser trying to choose a new, worthy leader from the king's 3 children, as the king is near death.

You're able to eventually choose which one becomes king/queen through your actions and decisions ingame.

It looked like it was going to be a very neat game, but it is extremely short. Like, a 1-battle-game.

Story

The king has 3 children: Terrence, Brenda, and Erik. They all have positive qualities, but also have a tradeoff that comes with them.

Terrence is a brave leader who cares about his people, but doesn't have the drive to be king. Brenda has a no-nonsense attitude towards the role of queen but also is uncaring. Erik is brave and strong but also reckless.

Noah takes the 3 of them to fight a Demon. Throughout the battle, you can choose which one of them is doing the best and they will give you a buff. In addition, there are a few choices in the intro that affect the outcome of who becomes king.

I liked that you can make decisions and have your own ending based on game choices.

Gameplay

The only gameplay you really see is the fight against the demon. This fight is quite nicely done, even though (or perhaps because) it is the only one. There are scripted events where the demon summons Mages or Willowisps who aid him in battle. Every so often, you get a choice "Who is doing the best in battle" or something similar. Depending on who you choose, the person does something special that doesn't take their turn.

The demon has 2000 HP, so the battle lasts a decent amount of time. After you destroy the additional units, the demon is quite easy.

This will be the screen for 90% of the time.

Complaints

This game is way too short. There's nowhere near enough time to get involved in the story, learn character skills, get new items, etc. It's hardly even an RPG when it comes to it.

There are too few choices. This ties in with the first one, but is somewhat different. There are only about 4 choices in the whole game that contribute to who gets chosen in the end. And all the choices are pretty obvious: it's essentially just "Who do you want to be king" asked 4 times.
Summary

This game concept could be quite nice if done differently. For example, if you controlled all 3 of the people one-by-one and did some specific quest, and what choices they made determined who gets chosen. That would be cool.

As it is, it's a below average game due to the length, limited variety in choices, and not being able to do almost anything.
