The Adventures of Zack & Brian was originally intended to be an entry for the RM Venture event. But alas, it spiraled out of control and became a bit too big. It's still going to be rather short, but there's going to be more complex content than originally planned. Also, it will still adhere to the rules of the event.

The game follows the brothers Zack, an archmage, and Brian, a swordsman, as they have to team up and stop an old cult from summoning a demon lord. In order to succeed, you have to combine both their skills to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.

The Plot

It's not often that Brian, "professional" slime slayer and runner of errands, gets a visit from his brother Zack. But instead of sitting together and talking about the old times, the brothers are attacked by an enemy of Zack. Zack ends up dead, but it seems that even death can't stop him from doing his duty for the king, and so he enlists his brother to help him stop his killers from wreaking even more havoc.

Gameplay

Those who actually read the above paragraph can tell that there's not much to the plot itself, as the main focus of this game is its gameplay. Even though you technically control Brian, you get to use both brothers' skills. You'll be able to interact with almost everything, and many things and people will show different reactions, depending on what you do.
Since action battle systems and tile movement don't go well together, battles will not be that frequent. Instead, you need to use your brain some more. Still, that doesn't mean you won't have to beat up the occasional cultist. Also, those following the RM Venture event already know the potential final bosses. Or do they?

More Menu Modifications

I love alliterations.

Anyways, the shop interface adaptions are finished. I was planning on showing off the modified save slot preview, too, but a) it's not finished and b) it's relatively minor compared to this.

Looks like we found a use for the RM2k3 battle system HP/MP bars. :) I'm not sure about the MP bar's color, though. It could be a bit lighter, maybe.

Yeah, I know, there's lots of tech updates and not really any game progress, but all the menu redesigning is a) fun and b) creating a solid basis for the rest of the game. I'm just glad I can use the native menu now.

"Contest project that spiraled out of control"? Now where have I heard that before? *snerk*
Oh shut up, Flard. xD

(But yeah, I seem to have a knack for making things bigger than I expect them to be.)
