Deceptively Pretty

I'm sure the other player will probably quite understand why I feel that there's quite a bit of deception in this game, beginning with the pretty pink graphics that you see from the start. This is by no means a jab at this game, though, because this theme is used quite well in the game's favor.

~ Graphics ~
This is probably the major pull for most people; I mean let's just face it, Dreaming Mary's custom graphics are just the best looking eye candy. Even certain areas (which I won't bring up exactly here) that completely forego with the light and almost girly backdrops still pretty much fit with the atmosphere they were going for.

~ Sounds and Music ~
Speaking of atmosphere, the music is amazing. If I had the right means (the right kind of player and all that for the ogg files) I'd probably listen to some of those tracks on repeat till I was sick of hearing them... and then probably be listening to them a few more times, anyway. It's one of those that I'm glad they have a bandcamp page for at least some of it.
As for the sounds, I have yet to sit fully through all of the "radio" snip-its, but the voice acting was still a really nice touch.

~ Gameplay ~
This was probably where it comes down a few notches. It basically plays like any other side scrolling adventure game, but that's not it's downfall. The downfall is how deceptively simple this makes it out to be. The real bulk of the game comes from the puzzles given by the animal characters, and I have to admit this was when I had to look at a walkthrough (not so much for Pen Guindel or Foxanne's sections at first, but most definitely for Bunnilda)
After that, I needed to glance at a written walkthrough to figure out how to find Foxanne the last time (clever eventing there) along with a glance to figure out what Pen Guindel's clue meant.
I'll also admit to being slightly annoyed after awhile with having to replay it fully multiple times to unlock the bonus content, but that's more on me than the game itself.

~ Story ~
Obviously, the story is about Mary (also known as Mari) who is a dreamer and whose mother told her before about the power of said dreams. What I'd like to bring up is the amount of subtext in this game. There's so much underlying meanings that can be taken in so many different ways that this could've only been done in a dream world context. I'm sure there are some people out there who think they know what it all is, but many times you're just left with so many questions, especially after getting certain endings (and I won't say which ones; you should really play yourself) This, most definitely isn't a bad thing; it's what a lot of creative people try to achieve in their works and I have to applaud the talent behind this game for pulling it off.

Even with the problems in gameplay that can make it seem... slightly too hard at times, I'd still suggest this not just because of the pretty graphics and great music or what was achieved in Ace Lite (apparently) but because of the thought provoking endings that leave you questioning, and the amount of subtext that only adds to the questions...
