Exceptional game!

Introduction

Learson is an adventure game by ralphthefifth, and it's good. It's exceptionally long (3.5 hours of play and I haven't finished yet). It's very fun throughout, and there's very little pure farming.

Environment

The biggest pro and the biggest con is the jumping and climbing aspect of the game.

The good aspect is that it's an interesting system that's rarely seen in rpgmaker games - you can jump over gaps and climb up vines on walls. It lets you clear gaps that would otherwise be impossible and move vertically up/down walls.

What is bad about this system? You can only jump at certain areas, and there's no indication of where those areas are. The vines to climb blend into the wall brutally, making them easy to miss.

The maps are well made and have good, intuitive layouts. There are plenty of items and a few puzzles. The environment is interactive - for example, some puzzles will require that you pick up planks and place them over holes.

Story

*minor spoilers*

The basics of the story: your country is at war with the Westerners - whom your country views as barbarians. In the resulting chaos, a bandit group known as the Mad Dogs rises up to terrorize the populace.

There are two recurring storylines that you alternate between: the main character are David, a one-eyed loner with an unknown past who has a grudge against the Mad Dogs leader. And Ralph, a private detective who is forced to flee his stable life after he is drafted into the military. Ralph meets two others on his journey who join him.

Later into the story, you meet the mysterious Order of Raphael

The story is quite nice. There's no really stupid plot devices the maker uses here, and sections of the plot are even non-cliche which is rare for RPGMaker games. The parallel storyline structure may be a pro or a con depending on what you like. I personally thought it was fine, because the sections were lengthy enough and tied together enough that it still formed a cohesive story.

Gameplay

This game is actually an adventure game first and an RPG second. There are few random encounters and there's no level grinding. Instead, you go from area to area meeting new people, discovering new things, etc.

The adventuring is hindered at points by not knowing where to go next. This is sometimes because the vines blend in with the wall and you don't see climbing areas, or don't know where to jump, and sometime for other reasons, however you can typically eventually get to the next area by just being persistent.

Battles still exist, though. There are a couple bosses, a few fights you can't lose, and some wandering enemies on the screen. These enemies wander around and if initiate a fight if you touch them. The fighting uses TP system (combo points) and MP, and it uses them both quite well. Each character has a specific role and is balanced.

An unfortunate part of the gameplay is that there are some glitches. For example, there is an infinite gold glitch available partway through the game. You can also open treasure chests and battle enemies through cliffs.

Summary

This game is extremely long, and will keep you entertained the whole time. Despite occasional problems, this is really great and shouldn't be passed up if you're looking for some adventuring fun.

I was wondering what point you had reached when you wrote this and whether your opinion might have changed when/if you completed it.
I had just done the order of raphael part with the orb. I'm not done yet but I hope to finish it soon.
