It's a busy day for OMNIS, promising to be uniquely blog-heavy.

In this episode of "Things That Have Happened", new artwork by Luther Everett:

Annnnnd, for japes, a before and after shot of my bonfire design.

The process of trial and error it took to make involved hours spent on the 'before' version followed by visceral disgust at how shoddy and cartoon-ish it looked (it looked EVEN worse when animated..)

After a few more hours trying to compensate for poor design by an over application of Photoshop filters and resizing, I decided to start again - which is where 'after' found life.

I checked the video and the after one looks pretty good man! I know what a pain photoshop can be.

But here's a tip, make the last frame such so that when the animation restarts, the 1st frame will look like a natural progression from the last one so that the whole loop will look smoother and not stutter.

Or use more frames and do what I said if possible for an even better effect.

Creating 4 more frames should, in theory, be do-able. I tried making them run 1,2,3,4 then 4,3,2,1, but it just looked like the flames were moving in reverse.

Yes, all in all you're right, there's a kind of 'jump' that needs sorting.

Yeah I thought that the reverse wouldn't work 'cause the flames move outwards so the smooth loop idea is the best solution.

Having the flames rise simultaneously on top of each other (like water ripples, waves or smoke particles to give you an idea of how it works) would mean that it will be a closed loop that repeats itself.

Try something like that to fix the animation without too much trouble.

You can add some particles for eye candy later on but the base needs to look good first.
