Not for the easily scared...

Introduction

Guide Me is a horror/puzzle game made by ShiroChibiTiger. It is relatively short, and you can finish it in 15-30 minutes. The best thing about the game is the custom artwork, which is very very good. The story is very open to interpretation, as all the maker gives are hints about what happened.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is really enjoyable and adds to the experience of the game.

The game takes place in a scary house area. There are items to collect and enemies scatted around and your goal is to escape. There's dim lighting, and you carry a lantern. The house is spooky and well made.

One of the main things that makes it spooky is the plenty of jumpscares that there are. When you die, for example, the freaky/disturbing pictures pop up on screen. Especially scary if you're concentrating on the map and playing alone, and one of these pop up suddenly.

These are only a few, and you'll see them quite a bit.

They're all very well done, and especially scary when you play through it!

Gameplay

The gameplay seemed alright, but it could have been done better.

The gameplay is more or less solving puzzles and collecting "secrets" that are necessary to escape from the house. My first complaint with it is that there is a lot of instant death. It also seems quite random where there is and where there isn't. For example, clicking a specific wall causes instant death. Walking into a certain square (nothing special about this square) causes instant death.

This is partially negated by the fact that you can save anywhere, but you probably won't save before doing harmless things. You will replay content many times, which is not, in my opinion, a good thing.

All the notes in the game are hints that you need to follow, except...
A note tells you to NOT use the dog, but using the dog is necessary to finishing the game with the second ending. Seems like an unnecessary/unfair trick seeing as he changes the way he uses notes and gives no other indication you need to use the dog.

One of the areas has a green zombie chase you for doing pretty much anything, which hurts the exploration in that area and makes it annoying. I think the thing I talked about last paragraph was supposed to protect you versus these enemies, but the zombies just cut through it and then kill me. And you can't get away from them either.

Some of the puzzles are unintuitive. For example, a ghost that kills you if you haven't collected a specific item in a different room, and doesn't give an indication of this.

However, there are good aspects of the gameplay too. There's a cool Room of Secrets you can go to in order to gain optional clues about the story. I liked that. There's also chase/avoidance puzzles that work fine, and a few others that are neat.

Summary

The art was very very good, (although maybe there should have been more of a variety in scary things, not so many jumpscares) but the gameplay could use more work. You shouldn't struggle too much with it though, the game can be easily finished in a half hour. All in all, it's a good/fun game to play, and if you save often you will get through it.

Giving a score to this game has been quite hard to decide on. I guess would give the art/atmosphere a 5/5 and the gameplay/puzzles a 3/5, so I'll split the difference and go with 4/5

Thank you so much for leaving a review! This is my first game, so certainly I have many things to improve on!

About the dog note, that was left on purpose. If the monster/creatures in there don't want you to leave, then they aren't going to tell you to get something you need to get out.

All of the instructions that are not presented in note form and just pop on the screen are instructions that I, the game maker left to help you. Sorry if that was unclear.

Same with the ghost and item part, I can't be telling you what to do the whole time. Is more of an independent thing (though it is true I could have left a small indication, sorry).

I'm super glad with the score and the review though and I find it quite fair. :D Once again, thank you so much!
I would suggest that the ghost kills you before you go through the puzzle, as it'd be hard to know if you did the puzzle wrong at the moment. The ghost could say something about you being defenseless before killing you, or something similar as a hint.

There's no indication that the note is left by a ghost. You could have it appear after you beat some ghost or something. Also, how do the notes by the maker fit in with the storyline/lore? I'm not sure that makes a lot of sense given the game.
Thank you for the suggestions and I will make sure to fix some things up. I thought I might leave some instructions in as the editor since, well, it doesn't match with the real plot if the creatures inside the place would be trying to guide you out. I'm happy though that I am receiving feedback and I actually do appreciate it a lot!
