Court Room

I am busy getting together some video of the courtroom scenes. Till then enjoy a few vantage points from Mundy of the backgrounds he designed from scratch in blender. The thicker outline helps lend itself a bit more the style, but what do you think?

Testimony elements are in the works. Would you like to see different icons, or something similar to blue prints instead?

Are the busts too big for your tastes? We can resize them based on your feedback or leave them as is.

Would you like a custom font for explicit moments, or keep the stock font the way it is? We have a template for the verbal shouts, and can customize it in a way to fit the style of the game better.

This is awesome.

Thanks CC! It's much appreciated. Please let me know if you have any questions or you'd like to see something specific. If you have some critique I'm more than happy to make some changes.

Is the Justicar supposed to be imposing and towering? If so then his bust is fine, but if he's meant to be a bit more of a comforting authority figure then you may want to drop his bust a little. Unless of course the person he is speaking to is actually 4 ft high.

This is a good question, and he is meant to be rather ruthless lawmaker/judge. The children are smaller in portrait size to create a difference, with Jayce being shorter than Stacy due to his position in the wheel chair. The Aliens will be somewhat taller and thicker in width. The sprites will also show this size difference.

Would a drawn comparison chart/size ratio help a bit in understanding? Happy to make one up.

So since in this scene he's obviously talking to the alien(s) then he comes across as imposing, which appears to be the effect you are going for, so well done. Height differentials make a lot of difference in real world conversations but rarely if ever make a mark inside a game. It would be too difficult to constantly change perspective depending on who you were talking to, and would probably just confuse people anyway who haven't realised that's why a particular bust appears to be bobbing up and down.

I think you've struck a good balance with this guy, and for some reason that gold tooth just makes me like him. For all that he is an upholder of the law, he appears to have a rakish rebel side too.

Thank you very much! Makio did a great job taking my concepts and improving on them, you can thank her for his gold tooth. It was an instant approval from me.

I tend to try to keep it down to two 'categories' of heights when making busts. Because, yes, having height differences properly represented in most video games HUBS is difficult. (Very short characters might get lost behind the text box, likewise tall characters could get cut off the screen if the height matches the shorter characters) So I generally aim for one height to represent taller characters and another for shorter characters - though it isn't as drastically different as some of the PROPER height differences may be, I hope it's usually enough for the player to get the idea.

Anyway, thanks! I was quite proud of that gold tooth addition. xD

You should be, it adds a surprising amount of charm.

In regard to height I've seen it tackled in a few ways, one of the most consistent was having two busts on screen at once engaging in conversation, then you get the relative height between them displayed in a way that is direct and simple to interpret, and allows for a few gradations other than just tall and short.
Whichever way you go about representing them I'm sure I'll be impressed, after all I have been so far.

Great to hear, and thank you again. I do plan to have busts on the screen same time, though with the mouse script limiting me to default window size it will appear cramped. I am half tempted to reduce things in size 50% to get away with so much more once the puzzles are finished.

Right now the court scene is awaiting the evidence presentation script, and we are working to get that done before a video demonstrating court.
