More art and stuff!

Wake up and to my surprise, this silly little thing is somehow a buzzing game. heh Anyway, I wanted to share some of the art that's not really screenshot, image gallery material.

First, the culture shock for working with 2k3 was WOW WHY IS EVERYTHING SO SMALL. As a artist, that was a huge hindrance. To avoid the colour limit, I did the original portraits with a pixely brush, but then shrinking them turned into a nightmare. (it was okay when I thought I was shrinking them to 50% of the original size, but I soon realized no... I needed to go to 25%!! - everything fell apart)

Here's our heroes original busts at their original (and glorious) size.

Victor, the muscle-bound meathead of the party. Basically a puppy on steroids. He's adorable o3o~*

Fermat, the grumpy, socially-awkward mage. Such fabulous eyeshadow~ No one ever mentions his eyeshadow in game. I feel like that was an oversight of mine.

Fermat and Victor are the only two characters in game with busts, but honestly, they're the only two characters that really matter.

Ridiculously small image size (and quality) aside, the OTHER thing that smacked me hard in the face with 2k3 was that daunting moment of ... Oh shoot, I need those animated battlers for the default system. Cue Makio smashing her head into the tablet a lot. Pixel art is NOT my forte, but through the magic of frakenspriting, recolouring, and some hand drawn bits, I managed to make what I think are pretty cute and good representations of the characters :)

Just don't mind that some of their animations are a bit janky. ;o; (We haven't put up a battle screenshot yet, since battles are what we're doing today, but yeah!! I wanted to share their cute little sprites anyway)

There's a few other images in game that I'd love to share original qualities of, but they're all spoilers ;D

Hopefully the game will go up tonight!! *fingers crossed*

Very nice! Yeah, that size-limit for 2k and 2k3 really makes art tricky.

Best of luck with the battles, and here's to a new game coming out very soon ^____^
I typically draw things double size the original; what I found out too late was that I had to save files at half the size of the actual screensize. >3> I made it work though. It was just probably 45 minutes of fiddling with the way I resized things, filtres, and settings to get what is--- acceptable for my standards. (at first the busts had a really murky look to them that muddled the expressions :< Which was NOT allowed! Their expressions are important o3o )

I'm both looking forward to and a bit scared of releasing this. xD It's certainly not quality - but I did put a lot of heart into its cheesy little story. (and I've fallen in love Fermat and Victor :< Hopefully I can make another game with them; considering how this one ends - that could be a lot of fun ;D )

I'm glad you were able to get the art working. There are few things more frustrating than finishing art and finding that the sizes are wrong.

It's fun to release something short under a small time frame (though having said that, I've yet to be able to release something quicker than a week XD). If the characters shine through, I'm sure it'll be enjoyable ^_^
I agree! It's fun setting a small time limit and grinding something out. :> The characters appeal to my tastes, which hasn't ever let me down before xD (It was reassuring to have Rach begging me to paste more of the story into dropbox for her to read at work heh)

The biggest hurdle now for me (since all the art is done) will be making the final two battles - since I want those two to at least be interesting. O: and fretting at work all morning that Rach doesn't hit any bumps in eventing while I'm at work. :) All very doable things in a day.

Yeah, if I love the characters, I can work super-hard on a game, despite all obstacles :DDDD

I'm no expert, but if you'd like someone to brainstorm with on those battles, I'd be totally willing to ^_^
Sure! I'll see what i come up with at work, and toss you a PM after I'm home :)
I think my speed at eventing in 2k3 is going up... at least a little bit. Biggest slowdown is not knowing where the event commands are because so many have moved :x

The lack of 1 step backward is really throwing me off as it's a move command I like to use a lot. I mean, I can get around it with direction fixes and actually picking the direction that is backwards, buuuut... I still miss it.

Yeah, totally. Hunting for the right command over and over... I wonder how much time I lost on that alone on my 2k3 game XD And then I switched back to Ace and said "Wait, ceilings work differently again."
