Featured Game!

A short, sweet update: for those who don't know, Legionwood is RMN's featured game this month. I didn't know it was coming, and was pleasantly surprised when I logged in today and saw it on the home page. So uh, kudos to me, I guess?

Anyway, I just want to thank everyone who has played and supported the game (especially those people who provided useful feedback) over the course of its development and the couple of years afterward. Your comments and suggestions have shaped the game and helped me make it into what it is today. Keep on playing and remember to drop a line if you have any thoughts, because an update is never out of the question. I worked on this game for nearly 3 whole years and it was a huge part of my day to day life once. For giving me the chance to see it succeed, I owe you one :)

So celebrate this occasion by giving it a download and playing it through, if you like. Thank you once again, and keep an eye on Legionwood 2, which I am slowly but surely plugging away at. There is plenty more old school RPGing to come!

I think there might be another bug in the newest build 5.2 game; after you enter the Magris Academy and talk to Serino standing in front of the entrance to the Glacius' room the screen goes black, but there is music in the background O.O
I decided to replay the game, this time doing all sidequests I can find. I also decided to differentiate the characters more this time. The ideas so far:

Lann - I'm going to see if a fighter/mage hybrid is viable. With mage I mean offensive caster, I already know fighter/healer builds are not only viable, but overpowered. So far it does seem to work thank to the AP system having diminishing return and whips being hybrid equipment in nature. The question is however if I will use magic at all once Dual Wield is available.

Liara - I don't think I will keep her around once more characters join, so I didn't bother to think of any concept for her and just made her a vanilla mage. If nothing else it means I can't make any other character a vanilla mage without breaking the differentiation idea.

Ark - I have two ideas with him. First, he's going to be a fighter with heavy armor. That probably doesn't sound like a new concept, but in the other playtrough I made I found it more efficient to give fighters mage armor than heavy armor. The second idea is not to give him dual wield. I'll see if I can make him more than "the fighter who deals half the damage fighters with dual wielders does". Ideally without him having to spam Y-something Slash and eat Peptides like crazy.

I soon need to figure out something for Alexis.

Anyway, did you tone some bosses down in the latest build? The ogre never used it's earth spell and I could easily defeat it at level 3. Ifreet was killed before Merces left the battle, something that I've never been able to accomplish before.
Ah nvm I found it!

Now I am wondering how can I find another two image halves; I already got one from the hermit girl earlier in the game and another at the Pirate's Cove.
I managed to complete this.
It's a fantastic game, good job Dark Gaia.

@Crystalgate: The good thing is that pretty much any character build is possible. My favourite part of when I play D&D with my friends is thinking of all sorts of wacky character builds and seeing if they worked. I wanted to reproduce that in Legionwood, but take away the class based core of D&D. The bosses were toned down a little - lots of complaints about their difficulty. If you want, you can go into the editor and make them harder yourself; some players are doing that.

@rubyrinx: The Seirno freezing glitch seems to happen only for some people. I have no idea what causes it, but if it happens, either redownload or load your game again and it will work.

With that said, the Legionwood Expansion Pack is coming soon.
While almost any build is possible and I'm not going for the most powerful this time, I will still only choose builds that I feel has meaningful advantages. The build I choose for Arc for example, has less agility, magic defense and later even damage output than a powerbuild fighter. Still, he does gain more defense and evasion, so there are meaningful advantages with it. Meanwhile, a critical hit build would (at this point at least) deal less damage in average than a Double Strike spammer as well as having less consistent damage and gain nothing useful in return.

Anyway, for Alexis I decided to make her a fast and strong physical fighter. The restriction I put on her is that I will not put any points into defense, evasion or HP. Basically, she's a glass cannon.

The Zombie Dragon or whatever it's called, is far tougher than any preceding bosses. It had a multitarget attack which could two-hit kill Arc and Alexis. Further, the boss could use that move twice in a row and only Alexis was guaranteed to be faster than it.

Edit: I just found out what exactly Luck does. This allows for tank builds, although not until later.

Why exactly is it called Luck? It's an extremely misleading name.

Anyway, in case anyone else wants to know what Luck does (did I miss the game in any way or shape mentioning what it does?), it decides how likely you are to get targeted. Each character has Luck chances of getting targeted. If you max out Luck, it will be 29 which means you have 29 chances compared to the 4 of every other character. This is almost a 71% chance of every single-target attack being directed at that character.
Eh, luck's purpose in terms of tanking is hinted by a NPC. But since that system wouldn't be absolute, and the attacks that hit the whole party generally tend to be the most lethal, I decided it wasn't really worth it to pump points into luck.
None of the stats are really explained. I did put a description of them on the gamepage for now. Considering that Luck determines how often you are targetted, I thought it was an apt name. That's generally what Luck does in other RPGs.

Anyway, I had to shelve my concept for Alexis since she got one-shot far to often. On the plus side, the Fighter/Mage hybrid build I gave Lann works really well. He can keep up with the more specialized characters and the balance is such that I'm using both physical and magical attacks frequently. I did not expect it to work so well honestly. Further, it seems Arc will be able to perform well as a non dual-wielding fighter. He has the Y-something Slash and the Ancient Helmet combined with Hyphotic Hit will allow him to keep that move up.

Also, I lowered the accuracy of a weapon to 1 and then used Double Slash with it equipped. Double Slash hit just fine making me think that accuracy still doesn't affect anything else than standard attacks.
Yes, I discovered that only days ago - the skills themselves have their own Accuracy, which is unaffected by your stat. Strangely enough, it is affected by being blinded however.

I'd wondered about that. In previous games, luck was an indicator of multiple little variables. In some games, it increases the frequency of positive events, the chances of finding rare items, the likelihood of critical hits and evasion, and other things only the game developers would know.

So, for luck to increase the chances of getting hit I do find a little strange, but it was something I started to suspect when Liara and Thyrra took more hits on average.

It also explains why Alexis was Castoth's punching bag in the final battle >.>

They're back again... :/
I beat the game again and I also beat the optional superboss. I cheesed the fight by first busting it's SP, something that can be done within a few rounds. Then I kept wailing on it and used my Miracle Lutes for extra damage output. It still toke over half an hour before the boss fell.

Other bosses could also be cheesed by first busting their SP pool so they can't use their more powerful moves. Maybe you should give bosses a way to refill their SP or make it much harder to drain them?
