Why Are There No Standard Demi-Humans?

There might be a few people who are curious about such things, considering that I have stated numerous times that there will be no traditional fantasy races, other than humans. There are several reasons for this; however, the easiest explanation is that they are extremely over-done. Every fantasy game, whether it is free or commerical, includes such races as: faeries, elves, dwarves, gnomes, mermaids and centaurs. There are far more races out there that can be explained and made interesting, especially races that few games have incorporated.

Goblins are about the only somewhat standard fantasy demi-human race that I am using. The reason I have decided to use goblins is simple: they are adorable. There is no way that anyone could possibly hate a goblin, especially when they have their own backstory and personalities. The goblins here are not overly intelligent, but they are greedy, conniving, cowardly thieves and act like small children with bad attitudes. They differ from most games inasmuch as my goblins are not inventors or tinkers, nor are they inherently evil. Sniveling, whining, self-entitled shit-heads, yes. But they are a far cry from villainous/somewhat sinister inventors. They are more along the line of chaotic neutral, thieving children than anything else.

Yes, I am using a canine-like race, as well. However, they are not werewolves, nor are they kobolds. More than anything else, they are similar to barbarians in their thoughts and beliefs. Again, they are not overly intelligent and their morality is going to be for the player to decide on; whether they are vicious and evil or simply attempting to survive in the deadlands where they live.

I am also planning on using an all-female spider-taur race, one similar to harpies and a race of sentient plants. Those three races have no names at the moment, though they will when they are fully explored and incorperated into the game. (I will state that the colorations of the spider women are based on real-life spider species.)

And the other reason that conventional fantasy races are not being used is that they have no place in Calurin. Most fantasy races are of magical origin- and well, Calurin's magic is on the decline, so those races that most people are used to would be dead or changed by now. There may be mention of them existing long ago (written about in books,) but like dragons, they are extinct and will not come back to life.

Bet I know what graphics you're using for them, too~ ^.^ I know of a great little site that has a spider-taur, harpies, plant person and other various races done to fit in with VX Ace. ;p
