Development Update #1

I figured now is a good time to briefly document just what it is that I have so far and give people an idea of where the project stands. Don’t worry, I can assure you it’s all good news.

Initially, I was handling development by doing everything about a particular area, one area at a time. That means all the map, graphics, encounters, cutscenes, etc for an entire area. This method works for a lot of people, but I found it too be too inefficient and causing me to burn out very quickly.

Instead, what I decided to do was finish all (or most) of a particular feature, one feature at a time. That means drawing all of the game’s tiles, then making maps out of them, then making monster sprites, etc.

As of now, all but two of the game’s areas have full, functional gameplay, and the map of one of those is already complete. That means about 80% of the game works on a mechanical level with encounters, equipment, treasure to find, bosses, and so on. However, only the first hour of the game has its story and cutscenes implemented.

Once the game is playable from start to finish, it will be a matter of adding cutscenes and story to the rest of the areas that do not have them yet. I imagine this will be the most time-consuming part of development; most of the scenes are written out; they’re just not in the game yet.

All of the maps are done except for the placeholder towns. I also need to make additional tiles for the final dungeon before I make that.

This project is a lot further along than I tend to think it is and I hope it will be done in a reasonable amount of time. Hope you’re all looking forward to it!

Additionaly, I've started a dev blog for the game if anyone is interested, though some of it is just cross-posting. Check it out at http://heroyuusha.tumblr.com/
