Everyone knows the story of Final Fantasy IV by now. Yet, I've always wondered what if things had gone a different way? What if, say, Rydia had never joined your party? Or Kain had stayed with you after the incident in Mist? These questions and more are what this game explores, and tries to give a definitive answer to.

This is not a scene-by-scene remake, but rather a re-imagining of what I think a "parallel dimension" Final Fantasy IV would have played like. For the graphics, I took a lot of inspiration from the PSP remake, though I did try to up the quality of the graphics at least a little bit (especially using Celianna's tilesets which are amazing). Most of the tracks from the original game have been replaced with remastered/remixed tracks from all over the internet, such as OCRemix, the DS version, Dissidia, and many Youtube artists.

I'd like to note here that I went for a blending of several prior versions of the game in terms of the actual 'feel' of the game. Such as the title screen, I went for the classic U.S. release on SNES and just upped the graphics as much as I could. Other areas will have more of a SNES feel while others will reference the PSP and even DS versions at times. The maps themselves are similar to, but not exact, replicas of the original maps from the SNES version. Dialogue is going to be a mix of the Gameboy Advance translation with original story by me.

Lastly, a huge shutout and thank you to the dev of Legend of Balance. Your game was an inspiration and tremendous guide for me, and it's awesome.

IMPORTANT - If you come up with an error stating that you are missing the xinput1_3.dll then you will need the following (safe download from Microsoft's site) DirectX Jun2010

**Do NOT enter the Moon's caves post-game or else you will glitch your game!**

Reverted the build to a previous one (in which there were no significant issues save for the lag on the Overworld). My apologies for the inconvenience, but it seems that trying to fix the lag present only caused more issues.

Features:

- Random Encounter Radar System
- You may go to fullscreen by pressing ALT + Enter
- Battle Rows similar to the original game
- Classic side-view Final Fantasy-type battle system (Modified Journey Battle System)
- New cut-scenes and dialogue depicting an alternate version of events from the original story
- 15 to 30 hours of gameplay
- Battle Difficulty options
- Enemy HP Bars (they're visible when an attack is made)
- D-Pad functionality on Gamepads
- New "Lunar Expanse" bonus area (Boss rush dungeon)
- New "hidden" Arena

Special Controls:

To enter Lunar Whale's control room:
Keyboard - Q key

Lag Killer & New Download

Hi peoples!

Got a pretty big update, and it's that I think I somewhat killed the L-A-G present on the Overworld (especially in late game). I've also fixed up a few passabilities in some areas, and I believe I fixed the whole post-game bug-whenever-entering-moon-caves-thingie. I've posted a new download for the game with these new updates (Google Drive) so I hope you'll take advantage. Oh, and you'll want to start a new save for the game after downloading this updated version. Old saves will work, but they'll be all wonky when going back and forth between Overworld and towns/dungeons.

Here's hoping the game performs better, and thank you all for your support! =)

I think a lot of people would be interested to see some images of the differences that might occur, instead of the same stuff found in FFIV. Just a thought.

Good luck.

Thanks! I'll definitely be posting up more images of some of the differences from the original story when I get to those points.
Interesting idea! I may keep an eye on this one!
I'm very interesting how this project came out.

Thank you both! I'll be posting up updates as I continue production on this. Right now, I'm still working on mapping before I get back to doing the storyline and eventing.

Yet the name of said dev is absent from your credits list. Hopefully this is not the case in-game.

That's because when I submitted this thing it was 3 in the morning. That's entirely my fault I missed that, but I've corrected it on here, and I had already added them by name in-game. :)
First of all, I am honored that you would draw so much inspiration from my game! Secondly, this is definitely an interesting idea. I have played romhacks of FF4 that did something similar, but using RM you have a lot more leeway for changes. As an obvious FF4 fan I am looking forward to where you go with this!

One thing though, and I'm not trying to cause trouble... but you mentioned using LoB as a guide. That's fine, but I do ask that you please ask first if you are going to be taking any scripts or non-ripped resources. I have personally edited/rewritten large sections of many of the scripts in LoB, and have written several from scratch just for the game. Plus, I have them set up in a way that really is not friendly to copy pasting (this is intentional).

Good luck with your game! =)

Your game really is amazing! And any resources taken are either ripped or I found them elsewhere online (especially art assets like the battle sprites/sword on the title screen). The scripting actually was set up from scratch, as I purposefully wanted to avoid using your own scripting so that my game could have its own voice.

I do use your project for inspiration mostly in relation to mapping and sequencing (and battle animations because those are a bitch lol). I do hope that my game does FF 4 some justice, and I hope you enjoy when it releases. =)
Thanks for the kind words! In all honesty though, if you want some examples of good FF mapping you should really check out Blackmoon Prophecy 2. It uses 16-bit tiles, but you can still see the principles of good FF-style map design. UPRC makes gorgeous maps, his world maps especially are to die for.

If you have any questions about scripting etc, feel free to ask.

I loved the first Blackmoon Prophecy, and now you've got me checking out the second one. =) I'm looking forward to that one releasing, that's for damn sure. Thanks for the support RydiaMist!
Cool project! Can't wait to see what you come up with. If you are looking at Legend of Balance's maps, I would just look at them more to see how the tiles fit together more then anything else, since most of our mapping isn't amazing. There's quite a few places that we use the tiles available in FF4. I agree with Rydiamist that you should check out the other FF games good map design though~
Instant sub, FF4 is my favorite game, and I'd love to see an alternate version of it in the works.

I'll be keeping that in mind (I'm looking at Blackmoon Prophecy 2 for mapping inspiration as well), and thanks for the support! =)

Well at least your not doing a complete remake, someone on this site already did that.

I played FF 4 on the psone, can't say I remember much about the story. Thought it was a tad over rated.

It's definitely not a remake, and maybe the alternative plot might appeal to you over the original story? For me, this is not just a labor of love, but of something I've wanted to do ever since I was a kid and I first played FF IV. So, while this game will be soaked in nostalgia, I hope the alternative story told makes the game feel fresh and 'new'.
Will it just be a story of set in stone alternatives or will the story be choice driven (which would be really cool and encourage replays with different choices)?

It'll be set in stone alternatives. If it was choice driven, while cool, it wouldn't be Final Fantasy IV. I'm trying to stick to the essence of what FF IV is and how it plays, while showing how things could have turned out differently for certain characters/events.

Okay. Still, this is gonna be fun.
Also, would it be possible for you to post some early battle footage? I wonder how those character sprites play out.

I don't see why not. =) I'll actually post up a video later on of the whole Intro, so you guys can see some of the battles and the iconic opening. I'll get to recording it now.
