Is Hero's Realm worth remaking commercially?

Looking for an anime artist, an animator, a music composer, and a sprite artist who will work for free

I am looking for earnest takes on this question.

I am a hobbyist developer on a small budget ($0 is small, right?) at the moment, with no experience releasing a commercial product. What I am doing right now is mulling over the practicality and feasibility of remaking Hero's Realm into a commercial game.

HR as a commercial game has always been a faroff idealistic fantasy of mine, but seems increasingly feasible with the release of MV, the expansion of Kickstarter to Canada, kids growing older, and the loosening of restrictions for games on Steam and other online game portals (judging by some of the crap that gets in there). People recently reached out to me about doing sprite work and music for it. It seems like it is all coming together slowly, despite me not doing anything, so I feel it is high time I actually took a serious look at it.

While I know a bit about hobbyist game development, I don't know shit about commercial game development. That's why I am mentioning this publicly. I am scared of the pitfalls I can't anticipate, some of the possible issues that might arise, the costs, the maintenance, and even to some degree stuff like ongoing support, refunds, and piracy. Validate my fears and/or alleviate them please. I don't even know how to break down a budget for a commercial game development project. I have never run a Kickstarter. Unlike other devs, I don't have a particular strength in one area (like, I am not a composer, spriter, scripter, writer, or artist). I am unfamiliar with the inner workings of any major distribution platforms.

For the aesthetic, I am sure you can guess, but I am going for an early SNES feel. Kind of like this: http://rpgmaker.net/games/7196/images/ but cleaner and with a better palette (and better charsets). My ambitious plan is to remake in in MV to take advantage of that engine's latest features, but my less ambitious (ie- cheaper less time consuming) fallback plan is to release it in RM2k3. It really depends on my analysis on the marketability and anticipated returns from this very generic retro RPG.

The first step is for me to replay and assess the current Hero's Realm. I'll fix the bugs noted so far and any new ones I find, slightly tweak some of the balancing, and releast a v1.6 in the new official RM2k3. So if nothing else there's that.

I am not quitting my dayjob for this. But what kind of return would a top down retro RPG with no hook or gimmick or witty title expect, honestly? $100? $1000? $5000? $1 MILLION DOLLARS? I have decided it is worth the effort to feel it out and release v1.6 in the official RM2k3, but beyond that I am hoping you could weigh in with your advice.

Thank you for your time.

My only foray into the commercial world of video games was the Remnants of Isolation post-contest Steam release, which didn't exactly set the world on fire, but it's a very different and small game, so I think something like Hero's Realm has a lot more potential.

I don't know much about the processes you'll need to follow or what the potential earnings are, but I do know that people love this game, and that love will most likely take you a long way. I'd be willing to purchase and/or back a Kickstarter of Hero's Realm in a heartbeat! :D

Maybe talk to Sailerius?

Also if you are having doubts that this game would be worth it, look at the accolades you received and unity's post. There is certainly a demand for these games and I think you'll earn something out of it.

I would:

-Talk to BadLuck. He is currently remastering Ara Fell within the new 2k3 to be released commercially on Steam.

-Finish, polish and release a small free project, maybe Hellion-sized. You need to regain your confidence and jumping into a commercial enterprise is NOT going to help you do that. I suggest doing this in MV, naturally.

-Research Kickstarter, what it requires, and what similar projects have done/have needed in the past.

-Teach your children how to create assets.

I would not:

Out of curiosity, why not? He has released commercial stuff in the past, right?

Well, I think 30089 downloads speaks for itself. I do think people would pay to play this game.
So besides original assets and a different engine what would you change to differentiate Hero's Realm Mobile from Heros' Realm 2k3 (besides not being 2k3)? If somebody played and beat the original HR what motivation do they have to pay for another version of it?

^--GREAT question to ask yourself.

You do have an advantage (?), however, in that not many people outside of RM really know what Hero's Realm is to begin with, so I think it will still be a fresh experience to your audience by large?

Hero's Realm is totally the kind of thing you could Kickstart - it's got a fairly big fanbase and you're hitting all the right nostalgia buttons. Still, you gotta weigh stuff like "How much money do I need for art? Music? Can I set a reliable deadline for myself? Should I stop working while I make this, and if I do how much more will I need?", etc. Kickstarting, media presence, advertising; it's a whole 'nother bag of potatoes that you gotta deal with (I'm totally inexperienced with that stuff myself!)

What Craze said is good advice though - maybe ask some people who have started (completed?) successful KS projects, and definitely get your Game Make confidence and drive back before you commit yourself to a big undertaking like Hero's Realm+. It has the potential to be a very cool, big thing, but I dunno if signing up for a big crazy challenge is a wise idea if you're in a slump!

Having played the original, I don't know that I would personally buy a new copy, but...

But yeah, I'd totally kick up a few bucks to back an updated production of it.

Great question, and one that I am struggling to justify.

How about:
"If Hero's Realm Deluxe takes off, kentona would be able to quit his job and focus on making games full time. Plus he would be able to devote time to managing and improving RMN".

But seriously, you know that I would tinker with the game, beyond just tweaking the classes/balance. I would reexamine every quest (you can tell that some of the quests were bolted on) and improve them; I would add a crafting system (because I love that shit); I would add the cool content I cut out to release the game; I would make the final dungeon be more than just a straight hallway to the end boss; I would make class changing more forgiving; I would probably add 3 classes (because that's what happens every time I tinker with HR); Custom graphics and sound and music.

...and that's really all I can think of.

Plus, on MV I could conceivably make a mobile version of the game so you can play it on your phone in the bathroom on break.

"Should I go commercial?" he wonders to himself.

"Yep."
I'd second Craze's advice. Do some research to have a better idea of the Kickstarter process and how much money you can expect to raise.

You should also consider whether you want to distribute the game for free or sell it when it's done. The crowdfunding campaign is a gamble: you won't know whether you'll raise enough money to pay everyone decently depending on everyone's rates and on how much content you want to include in the game. It might be best to have a fairly low objective you're sure to reach and a large amount of stretch goals.

Selling the game would make it possible to pay partners less during development and distribute profit shares later. Still a gamble but if sales are good everyone will be well rewarded in the long run.

Personally I'd like to be part of a serious, commercial project as well and eventually earn enough by working on game-related stuff. A Hero's Realm remake has good, very good, potential as a commercial project, I believe.

And so I wouldn't mind taking the risk and work with you for free until you have enough assets to start the crowdfunding campaign. I'm probably one of several to make that offer but it's up for your consideration :)
Let me know if and when you want to discuss about development and stuff.

Does Sailerius have any released commercial games that are earning money at the moment? Maybe better would be to somehow contact the guy who made LISA, if you could? If you can't contact him, maybe even try the guy who made Unraveled (he's more likely to be active).

I'm sure Artbane/Artie (co-creator of Labyrinthine Dreams and Master of the Wind) would be keen to have a chat with you about Kickstarter, since he funded a refurbishment of his game with Kickstarter, and it's been selling on Steam moderately.
Sending a PM your way~

I replay Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines every year. I have played it to absolute death, yet I still do it. Does that answer your question?

People replay games all the time. People on these very forums talk about replying xyz famous RPG all the time. Why not the same for a well put together game like this? :S

That's nice but it has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm getting at unless there was a free version of VtM released years prior to its commercial release with a few fewer classes and bolted on side quests. Hero's Realm: Play as you Poop edition would be in competition with Hero's Realm: Fuck the 2k3 ATB edition. A potential customer googles HR and finds they can buy it or just download the version with purple hair Faris for free. Original assets and being on mobile are nice but I don't think they will alone be enough of a hook away from the 2k3 edition IMO.

Oh yeah, I'd also look into any legal ramifications of making a game with copyright infringing material, making a name for yourself, and then trying to go commercial without the offending material but with the same game brand? I'm not sure if it's a thing but I've seen shit with patents* and I think it'd be worth getting a professional opinion on the matter.

* software patents are a perpetual shitshow so it might be irrelevant anyways
What if I called thenremake Bravely Generic? Or somesuch.

Are you suggesting I pull an SMBX and claim Square sent a cease&desist for HR 2k3 just prior to me going live with Bravely Generic?

In terms of Kickstarter you have a definite advantage over some in that you have a prototype available and can actually point to games you have completed so potential backers don't need to worry about forking over money to fund someone's pipe dream.

And yeah you'd need to be careful about copyrighted content, I know the game is a love letter to Dragon Quest but you'd need to scrub out out some of the more overt references and maybe lose a bit of your tongue-in-cheekiness.
