Wait! Specifics!

Preferably crime/drama with a lot of cast being friends/family and mystery thrown in. I know it's corny but shows like Criminal Minds, Cold Case, NCIS, Leverage (<3), Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, Psych, etc...

Nothing too dramatic - people tend to rec ones that are all dark and edgy and I don't really want too dark or too edgy please. This is basically background entertainment.

Any good recs?
One Piece

No, but in serious terms, I don't know a lot of crime drama TV shows. I can rec movies about crime, but they may be too on the dark and edgy side.

In any case, Goodfellas was the first thing that came to my mind.

I'll show myself out

Have you ever seen Monk? It's a detective show about a dorky older guy who has OCD. I'd say it's a good mix of light-hearted comedy and whodunit. It's a bit older now (I guess it came out in 2002) but it's got eight seasons.

I used to watch it all the time with my dad when it was on TV, it's pretty fun :)

Dollhouse? That's kinda edgy though I guess, and only two seasons.

Not a mystery, but if you want five seasons of family drama that's great for the background, there's Brothers & Sisters. Patriarch of a family dies, the widow and kids learn that he was pretty awful and spend a few years picking up the pieces of his life. It's one of those shows that goes from hilarious to poignant in an instant.

Pizza: have you seen miller's crossing? because it's my favorite moviethe definition of dark, edgy crime

Well all the CSI's come to mind if you want long the original is still going after 15 seasons, then there is Miami and NY which came in around 9 seasons I think and now there is Cyber which avoids a lot of the dead bodies and goes straight to the crime and motivation (though you do have to put up with Patricia Arquette, which is a chore). If you like Cold Case, Scotty Valens actually turns up in one of the CSI:NY episodes. I also happen to like Gary Sinise as an actor so that was the franchise version I watched until the end.

Then there is
Numb3rs (two brothers, one an FBI agent, one a brilliant mathematician),
Castle (NY cop and writer partner to solve crimes and eventual romance ensues),
Bones (FBI agent and forensic pathologist partner and romance ensues, more grisly stuff in that but also more 'family' with the ensemble cast),
Chuck (much more comedic than the others, hapless nerd gets advanced computer downloaded into his head which makes him a national asset complete with CIA handler - yes then there is romance, though the ending will make you throw the remote),
Lie to Me (facial reading expert and team aid law enforcement in detecting when criminals are lying),
Covert Affairs (follows female CIA operative through lots of trials and tribulations, more espionage than crime).
Crossing Jordan (Like an updated version of Quincy ME, but with a female Medical Examiner who can never seem to keep her temper in check).
Without a Trace (Missing persons unit procedural).
Life (only lasted a couple of seasons, but about a former cop wrongly convicted and then released who ends up a millionaire after suing and then goes back to the force to solve the crime he was convicted for in the first place)
In Plain Sight (police procedural about the WITSEC programme)
Perception (Brilliant psychology professor with schizophrenia aids former student now FBI agent in her cases)

I'm recommending mostly US shows since UK ones tend more to the D&E you are aiming to avoid, things like Whitechapel or Ripper Street or Broadchurch, though if you are ok with something a little more out there Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes may work, but NOT the US version of LoM they rewrote and ruined beyond all hope of redemption the ending.

Edit: Actually there is a good Canadian one, The Listener lasted 5 seasons I think about a paramedic who can read minds (yes there is a reason) who ends up first helping the cops and then a specialised unit of Canadian security services. Very much a 'family' feeling show.

Oh and if you're ok with the more paranormal/SF end of the spectrum then there is
Alphas (a group of 'special' people who can influence and react beyond the normal range and are occasionally used by the CIA/FBI/Law Enforcement)
Fringe (Special unit of the FBI which investigate weird occurrences, which are eventually traced to the existence of a parallel universe, also it has John Noble who is a wonderful actor)
@Pizza: Seen that movie, but thanks anyway. ^.^

@Slash: It's on my list of possibilities but I wanted to see if there were any others before delving into the oldbies again.

@Craze: I might check it out. I'd prefer longer, though, but I'll have a look. I tend to watch the first episode and see if I like it.

@nhubi: Okay, so... there's a reason I'm looking for new ones because...
CSI - watched (kinda lost interest after Grissom left and never really got into the newer ones but I'll check out Cyber)
Numb3rs - watched.
Bones - watched.
Castles - watched.
Lie to Me - watched.
Fringe - watched.
Crossing Jordan - watched
Without a Trace - watched.

Life - never seen. Will have a look-see.
In Plain Sight - heard of but forgot existed. I'll give it a shot.
Perception - sounds right up my alley. Will check out.
Life on Mars - tried, didn't catch.
Listener - Sounds interesting. Will give a look.
Alphas - sounds interesting. Will have a look.
Covert Affairs - on my list of possibilites.
Chuck - tried but didn't catch me.

Also:
Under the Dome - watched.
Warehouse 13 - watched.
Law and Order (CI, original series and SVU) - watched to date.
Haven - watched to date.
The 100 - watched to date.

Well, that's a few to look at! Thanks~ ^.^

So... Yeah, I tend to just put stuff on in the background while I'm doing something else. Usually youtube LPs but I've burned through a fair few series in the last year or two doing this.

I take it if you've watched Haven and Warehouse 13 then you've seen Eureka too? Have you tried Forever? It's only had one season so far as it's new but it's got Judd Hirsch (the father of the Eppes boys on numb3rs) in it. Also Sleepy Hollow (another John Noble vehicle). Lost Girl, Canadian paranormal series about the hidden world of Fae (though the 5th season hasn't been good). Orphan Black would require more than background thought. Gotham is too dark. If you're ok with the more political maybe Scandal, 4 seasons so far about a political fixer and her team. Unforgettable, did a radical shift between seasons 1 and 2 but it's definitely background noise about an ex-cop with hypersensitive memory.

Yeah I gave up on the original CSI when Lawrence Fishburne took over, he's a fine film actor but he doesn't work on a small screen, especially with an ensemble cast. Anyway glad I could point out a few.
Watched Eureka, have Forever on my list of 'Watch after a few more seasons are done', never checked Sleepy Hollow, looked at Lost Girl but didn't take to it, know of Orphan Black but have been tossing up about it, never heard of Gotham (might give it a go) and not big on political dramas. Unforgettable might be interesting if it's got a few seasons on it/is complete. (I mean, Leverage only had a few seasons but it's by far the best 'found family' show I've watched and definitely up there with my fave shows of all time, so I'm not averse to shorter series as long as they're completed and a good watch.)

Thanks for the recs, though! It's added a few names to my list~ Time to go check some out. ^.^ Might start with... hm... Listener.

What about the Mentalist? If you haven't watched it already

No problem, and yeah Unforgettable lasted three seasons and then done. In fact it was cancelled after the first but fan pressure brought it back. I wouldn't say it was great but it was easy watching. I'm hoping Forever makes it over the may sweeps hurdle, I like the show and would like to see it continue. The good thing is the writers knew they may not make it so they actually wrapped up the season long arc and left the door open for the next season without using a cliffhanger.
Yeah, that's what they did with Leverage and it helped make the series a lot more complete, even though they did get another couple of seasons. More shows should do that, so that the fans aren't left hanging.

One I really enjoyed that I haven't seen mentioned here is "The Mentalist". Other than that, I'm not really big on crime drama. I do enjoy the older stuff like the Rockford Files, Columbo, Perry Mason, and the like, but I tend to gravitate more towards sci-fi and fantasy, like the X-Files, or the Night Stalker.

Now I'm going to have to go and check out Leverage xD.

The problem with the fan-hang is that a lot of shows are cancelled without warning so the writers don't get the time to give that closure (don't even talk to me about Firefly, it still makes me furious). One of my go to shows, Babylon 5 did get warning, it was a 5 season story arc and so the writers worked feverishly to shove the last two seasons into the 4th and then because so much happened the show got a reprieve but the story had been told so the last season isn't actually good (I still watch it though, because it is so character driven).
Leverage is about a thief, grifter, hitter, hacker and mastermind who create a family and steal from asshole corporations ripping off the little persons. They fit together well in their dysfunctionality and there are some major bad-ass scenes that are just wonderful. Mostly it's a cute, funny, lovely show that isn't as well-known as it should be. And it wrapped up quite well (there may be a movie in the works because the fans love it so, and so do the writers and actors).

I really recommend people try it out if they like underdog stories or people getting their comeuppance. Also, kick-ass peeps who are experts of their field and work well together and make a found family and... X3

Sorry. I'll be over here finishing off my game for the event. >.<;

Ok, Ok I'll check it out. Though that cast role list sounds familiar.
edit2: There was a rolelaying game based on it, I thought I recognised it.

Oh and I just found out Forever got cancelled...bugger.

edit: Sorry Piano, it never goes away, does it?

Curse Fox's sudden but inevitable betrayal!
Doctor Who is pretty long.

Sitcoms are a no-go? Because I tend to plow through seasons of sitcoms while playing grand strategy games. And there's loads of decent ones.

What about something Danish? Like Forbrydelsen or its American substitute.
Or some classics. Piano already suggested Columbo. What about Kojak, Starsky and Hutch, Professionals?
And British series of course. Like Midsomer Murders or the one with that ugly Scottish guy (Taggart? Dalziel and Pascoe?).
I watch operas/series only on tv (with exception of Game of Thrones and Shameless) and I'm not too frequent at it too. So these are just my two pennies. You probly know most of it from TV yourself.
