Are you just going for enjoyment or do you have a table/booth or anything? :3

Just for fun. It would be nice to have something set up, but for now I'm trying to get over my fear/hate of crowds.

You should be fine, then ^_^ If you have a hotel room at the convention, you can always retreat there to get some relief from the crowds. That's what I used to do XD
What kind of con? Make sure to attend panels and shit. Because although there's loads of cool stuff to just look at those panels generally contain all the interesting stuff :)
Go Red! Stay strong :)

Whew! I'm back from my first day at the con. Honestly, if I had to sum up my experience in one word, it would be... meh. One of the panels I had wanted to go to was flat out cancelled, and a couple of others turned out not to be what I thought they were.

Fun fact: There are a lot of people who like to cross dress. For example, I saw more than one guy dressing up as Ryuko from Kill la Kill. Transformed Ryuko. For reference, this is what I'm talking about.

Also, I'm about to die. Tendinitis on my left foot suddenly acting up meant that I can't walk without serious pain. In a convention, that's kind of a setback. But whatever. Not the con's fault.

I went to Momocon. And believe me, if there were no panels, I would never have even considered going.

Actually, I think it would have been easier on me if I had a panel. That way, I would have something to concentrate on so I don't get nauseous. Unfortunately, I live about an hour away from the con, so it wouldn't make sense to get a hotel, meaning there was no safe haven for me!

I'm gonna print out this statement and hand it off to everyone who I smelled starting tomorrow. Given today's encounters, I'll need about 200 copies.

I'm so glad to see you went Red. Sorry about the panel being cancelled though, but hey you got out there and made it back, well done.

Ah, that's a bummer. And yea, cons can be kinda odorous, especially in smaller spaces. I hope you had fun anyway!

Eheheh... I'm probably cosplaying as Ryuko at a con I'm going to next week, too XD Not that costume, though, I don't think I have the guts for that /// but cosplaying is a lot of fun!

Finally done with the con. Yeah, that was a lot of fun. Saw a lot of fun and weird cosplays. I mean really weird. Like, Ronald McDonald crossed with Dragonball Z kind of weird.

The worst panel I went to was a guy talking about how to get into making games for fun. Well, I say worst, but that's only because he talked about RPG Maker without going into any detail at all. I kept mostly silent so I didn't accidentally take over the panel, but the guy didn't even know about VX Ace Lite and told everyone that the only way to get into RM was to buy VX Ace. I had to correct that one in front of the panel. The rest of the mistakes I just quietly corrected after the panel was over.

A interesting panel I went to was about copyright infringement. Did you know that cosplaying can technically get you sued? Yeah. In strict legal terms, you're breaking the law. Obviously, this doesn't carry over well in practice, as only idiots would go after people showing their affection in that way, but it is interesting to know.

Also, I watched some guy get his ass kicked by a pony. That was funny.

This may sound weird coming from me, but I think the biggest mistake I made throughout this trip was going alone. I kept getting the feeling I would have had astronomically more fun if I had a friend with me. I'll try and correct that mistake next time. Yeah, there will be a next time.

Huh, I didn't know that about copyright infringement! I assumed cosplay was totally okay, since it's usually not done for profit. And yea, bringing friends is a really good idea! Having somebody there to share the laughs with is what makes it. I definitely wouldn't have had nearly as much fun if my friend and I hadn't been taking turns cheering at the coolest cosplays we saw.

The lack of income is one reason why companies don't go after cosplayers. Another big reason is the incredibly bad PR such a move would get. Plus, cosplayers typically don't make nearly enough money for companies to take anyway, so going after cosplayers legally makes no sense from a financial standpoint.

So yeah. Legally, they can go after you, but 99.999999999% of the time they won't, as nobody comes out the other side smelling like roses. The LAWYERS presenting the panel are avid cosplayers, so I think their word can be taken kinda seriously.

It's more than just cosplay, though. Apparently, even fan art and fan fiction are technically copyright infringement, although fan art isn't nearly as bad. Again, though, it's all kinds of stupid to actually pursue legal action against these people. As long as you're not stupid enough to try and profit off your creations, while you won't exactly be protected, you are very likely safe. If that makes any sense.

One thing that was made abundantly clear, though, was that disclaimers on fan material don't mean jack squat. If you write something like, "I don't own any of these characters, songs, etc." that does not protect you in any way from being sued, and in some cases actually hurt you. If you write such a disclaimer, you're basically acknowledging that you're breaking the law, and that can make judges more likely to favor the companies in a legal case.

Interesting stuff.
