So other than the Phoenix Wright/Prof Layton crossover, I've no idea what games to buy next. Recommendation of NDS games are ok (they're compatible with the 3DS I've heard...)

Well, what kinda games do you like?

I really enjoyed Fire Emblem: Awakening, if you like tactical RPGs. Majora's Mask is a fun and weird Zelda game, if you didn't play the original. I'd also recommend Shovel Knight, if you like Megaman-style platformers.
Dragon Quest IX is great traditional RPG. I am replaying it right now, in fact.

I have heard good things about Bravely Default.

Super Mario 3D Land is fun, as is Mario Kart 7.

Humble Bundle is currently running a Nindie bundle, for indie 3DS and Wii U games - you should check that out, too.
I like story-heavy or tactical games but I'm open to all! :P I definitely need to finish at least one Zelda game... my sister lost her DS before I could finish it -_-

Bravely Default I've been seeing a lot of that too... and AHHH I'm a bit torn about the Mario Kart thing! Most of the people/my friends over here play the Japanese version (since they don't have the Chinese version and they obviously do NOT want the English one...) but, since, y'know, I actually understand English so I see no reason to buy the Japanese version.

But then I couldn't play multiplayer with them. AHHHHH :'(
Get the version that lets you play with your friends. Mario Kart is a million times funner when you're the guy with the blue shell nuking your friend in first instead of some random AI doing it.

Also try Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies if you liked the PW play and story style. It's much better than Apollo Justice (including for Apollo!)

If you're into JRPGs, pretty much the best handheld game around is Persona 4: Golden. Freedom Wars is also a fun action RPG for Vita.
I absolutely LOVE Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor (Overclocked OR Record Breaker), I got mine on sale so they're a bit pricey otherwise. Fire Emblem Awakening is also a solid choice, and SSB3DS is a must have for anybody without the WiiU version.
Persona 4 Golden, GO. Go now.

Second SMT Devil Survivor Overclocked. Great stragedy RPG mix and just magnicifent package allaround (the story, too)
The second one is getting a rehaul for 3DS soon (or is it out already?), and while it's not as good (imho), it is still very decent.

Also, Majora's Mask, seconded. It baaasically is the states of grief in a game metaphor. It has a lot packaged up - weird oddball, but great stuff.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Radiant Historia for the DS, and Soul Sacrifice for Vita. The latter has a kind of melancholic, but beautiful atmosphere going and has a truly intriguing story and world. I simply loved reading all those entries.

There's 999 and it's successor Zero Escape if you enjoy mystery and puzzle-solving.

There are more, but there are plenty of suggestions already!

Devil Survivor 2 (not the original, the original is horrible) and Radiant Historia are terrific NDS rpgs. The 3DS port of Tales of the Abyss is quality. Bravely Default is a lot of fun but the ending is a bit weird. FF Threatrhythm Curtain Call hasn't left my 3DS for a while.

You're magical to me.

I kinda liked Devil Survivor 1, tho I admit it was flawed. I'll have to check out the sequel if they've improved the formula.
