Wow, it's so easy to make good maps with non-RTP resources; it's like I don't even have to try.

If you can't make a map with the RTP, you probably can't make a decent map with other resources either. (Unless we're talking MV RTP which can be quite quarrelsome to use at times due to how big each tile is.)
The design aspects and general techniques are exactly the same so if you don't have those down, it won't matter what graphics you use.

That's true, but using more detailed or just original graphics can help up covering up bad mapping. If you want to make a game that looks decent with the RTP, you'll have to work hard on the design and mapping. If you use custom graphics, most people will just give you a thumbs up for the graphics, even though the mapping/design itself is horrendous.
You can't hide yourself behind graphics if you use the RTP. You simply can't.

All of the RTPs can be used for good if they're used appropriately and with love and understanding. 2k3 is a great RTP, especially if you want to make a more traditional 16/32 bit RPG.

Which is what I was saying - just because you make a 'good looking' map without RTP doesn't mean that it's actually a good map. It's just the change of graphics that makes it look different enough in people's eyes that it 'looks good'. They're most often talking about/responding to the graphics themselves, not the mapping. So saying 'it's easier to make a good map with non-RTP graphics' is actually wrong - it's easier to get people to think a map looks good, but that doesn't make the composition, design and layout actually good in any way.
I totally get what you mean. Even the upgrade of the vx ace modern tile sets to RTP. It definitely comes more easily and smoothly in terms of overall look and feel and design wise.
though I do enjoy working in good maps in RTP because it is more of a challenge :P
When it comes down to it's between blockyness and not blocky visuals. Just more appealing

If you are using a tileset that you've created, you know exactly how it's meant to look like. So in that case, yes, it IS easier to map with than the RTP.
You're still having to use common sense and design intelligence when mapping - it only makes it 'easier' in that you know what things are, but you still have to map competently. A bad mapper using RTP is still a bad mapper using Mack or custom graphics.
