THE MAKERSCORE TUTORIAL

What is Makerscore and how to get it?

The Makerscore Tutorial

RMN gets a large influx of new visitors all the time. And I constantly see new users asking simple questions about how to use this website. Well fear not! I plan on doing a series of tutorials about how to use RMN. So whenever a newbie asks an easy question you can just link them to one of these tutorials.

The purpose of this Tutorial is to explain what Makerscore is and how to get it.

What is Makerscore?

Well let’s break it apart. Makerscore is comprised of two words: “Make” and “Score.” So when you make something and submit it to the RMN website you get a score. The score you get on what you submit depends on what you made. When you make new things this score is added together to your existing score. The score is a numerical value that is displayed underneath your name. This value is displayed on your user profile and every time you make a forum post.

How is Makerscore determined?

If you made a screenshot and submitted it on you game page you will get 1 Makerscore. The reason you only get 1 Makerscore is because it was relatively easy to make and submit that screen shot. So the amount of Makerscore you get is partly reflected in how difficult it was to make what you submitted.

On the other hand, if you write a review you get 50 Makerscore. This is due to the fact that writing a review takes much more time. The more effort you put into something is partly reflected by the Makerscore you receive.

Why do I want Makerscore?

Your Makerscore is displayed on forum posts. The higher the number the more respect you will get from RMN users. A person who has been with RMN a long time and has submitted many things will usually have a high Makerscore. So in essence people will pay more attention to you and are more likely to download your games. Getting Makerscore will also increase the memory you have in your locker. You get about 40KB per 1 Makerscore.

What is the easiest way to get Makerscore?

Making a donation to RMN or purchasing something from their store is quickest and easiest way to get Makerscore. With just a one-time donation or purchase you will get 1000 Makerscore.

There is also the "New to RMN" article at the bottom of the page under the "Community" column. Guess what is just underneath that?

Though, wasn't there talk of making those links more visible? I can't recall.

Also I'm not sure if it isn't being just a little disingenuous. Makerscore isn't an indication of respect, respect is given to content. Yes there is a correlation between submissions and MS and more submissions do tend to indicate content, but just because someone can write a script or even a game, that does not automatically confer respect from the community. Nor should it, there are some badly written games and worse yet some game makers that react with ill humour and sometimes vulgarity to comments made about them, that reaction does not reduce their MS, but it does reduce the amount of respect given. There are members of this community to whom I listen but not because of their MS, because they are helpful, interesting, open-minded and honest. Qualities I look for in the real world, that garners respect, not an arbitrary number under a user-name.

I always thought that the main effect of Makerscore, apart from showing that you actually contributed something to the site, was that it increases your lockerspace...
Generally, I agree with nhubi. Makerscore can result in you being more respected on the site, but it doesn't necessarily have to. I like collecting Makerscore, but it's not at all an objective indicator of how "important" you are as an RMN member.

I think I have to partly disagree with what you guys have said. Imagine your scrolling through the forums and you see an interesting comment. To the left you see a user title, avatar, signature, and Makerscore. From there a person can click on your name and view your profile. If a person views your profile they may download your games (since they are showcased on your profile.)

Now a number of factors can go into clicking on someone's name to view their profile (let's pretend you don't know this user.) Makerscore is one of many things that could determine whether or not you click on that name. Just the chance someone will view your profile makes Makerscore important.
This doesn't offer much. It's like the existing article on MS except it's lacking information. I'm surprised that this was even accepted.

If your referring to this article: http://rpgmaker.net/articles/455/ then I don't bleieve its as informative as my article. (It's actually shorter and doesn't explain as much as mine.)

In the future I plan on doing articles on:

How to submit a gamepage.
How to edit and make changes to your gamepage.
How to nominate a game.
How to register an account on RMN.
How to make a forum post.
(I'm also open to suggestions.)

And whatever else I can think about. I have seriously seen some rediculous questions in the forums. It's time to have an answer for every single one of them.

I'm sorry, how to nominate a game, you mean for the Misaos? That's 'click the nominate button on the game page'. I don't think that's long enough for a tutorial. Also that's already covered in the Misaos page.

How to Register, 'click the register button in the navigation bar at the top of every page and fill in your details.' Also, methinks too short for a tutorial, and lastly how to make a forum post? Type in the big empty box at the bottom of the thread and press 'submit'. It's not rocket science, and unless someone has never been on the internet before they'll know how to post.

The game-page submission information is already on the New to RMN? link, though I could see the usefulness of an 'edit/change' tutorial.

Enthusiasm is to be applauded but we don't want to reinvent the wheel.
Your tutorial doesn't explain anything that isn't in that other tutorial. You just explain the same thing in a different way and add your own personal opinion about the importance of makerscore.

Oh wait, you did have one piece of exclusive info. That donating gives you 1000 ms. I guess because technically it's an achievement.

kentona:
What is makerscore?

Makerscore is a quantitative representation of your contributions to the site. Certain contributions net you a certain amount of makerscore, for example, a tutorial will get you
30, while a completed 5-star game will get you
750!
You can find your total makerscore under your name in both your user profile and under your avatar in posts on the site. You can see a summary of makerscore earned by clicking on Submissions in the toolbar above.

It's literally the same thing. But you don't mention the lockerspace, the overnight batch update, and that you can view a summary. So you explain even less. And the things you left out are the things that people are actually confused about.

If the makerscore values get changed and you don't realize, or are simply not informed, then you are providing incorrect information. Having 2 tutorials for the same thing is not going to reduce confusion. Especially when the other tutorial was written by the god of makerscore. If those newbies couldn't find his tutorial on makerscore, what makes you think they will find yours? There have been discussions, and site changes, on how to make important information more readily available to new users. I don't think this is the answer.

And uh, you took a screenshot of text. You could have just copied the text and paste it in. If you need to update it, that becomes more difficult than it needs to be.

Like nhubi mentioned, all that other stuff is common sense. Where do people post about how they can't figure out how to post? I don't think I've ever seen anybody ask those questions. This feels more like an easy way to gain more makerscore, haha which I find hilariously ironic :P

The only way I can see it being legitimate is if you had all that info in a single tutorial "How to use RMN". That I can get behind.

Please don't take this personally, like I hate your or something. I feel like I'm being a jerk but I can't help but see a huge flaw in this plan and would call out anybody who posted it. I really don't know why this was accepted and why the admins are ignoring it. Site rules and information should be left up to them.

I'm not so easily offended. But the article passed because it met the minimum requirements for having an article. (I can't believe Kentona didn't include the donation part in his information about Makerscore though.)

But I think I will still do a video tutorial on how to submit / edit your game page since this has been asked a lot in forums. I just have to wait to have a completed game to do this one. Think of all the things on the game submission page that can be covered. (adding Downloads, Images, Blogs, Users, etc...)

Edit: I added that information about getting extra memory in your locker. Thanks for the help in improving my article!

Kory_toombs you might want to have a closer look through the New to RMN link, since I know it covers things like adding images/screenshots, videos and CSS to a game-page. Find the things you think it doesn't cover and then create a tutorial to meet the lack.

You mean this article: http://rpgmaker.net/articles/235/. I found this rather uninformative when I first joined RMN. It hardly even covers the basics. I'm suprised it has never been updated. Also a video tutorial will actually show how to do it rather than just write down a short summary. People have different ways of learning new information. Writing down information isn't always the best way to get your ideas across. Different kinds of media will help people who have different ways of thinking.
I update that article regularly. It's been updated about a half dozen times so far.

Also donating doesn't get you 1000ms. Donating and then telling me that you donated gets me to give you an achievement worth 1000ms.

And makerscore isn't the same as "respect points". I don't know where you got that notion from. Other than e-peen, some kilobytes of lockerspace, and a psychological incentive to "make a number go up"*, makerscore is meaningless.

I like that you took a screenshot of my tutorial, and added it to yours.**

I leave the accepting and denial of articles (and reviews) up to Solitayre's discretion.

* This incentive is pretty damn effective, given that this is a hobbyist RPG creation site! go figure.

** I don't like this.
I leave the accepting and denial of articles (and reviews) up to Solitayre's discretion.

Ah, then perhaps create a policy for him to follow. Of not allowing users to be a source of information for site functionality.

If I had that policy, then I would have never gotten the New to RMN? article! But honestly it doesn't come up that often. The policy of "be not-shitty" should suffice.
Actually, I let this one through as it met all the current criteria of articles - being about something on the site/to do with game creation/of interest to game creators that is well-written as far as grammar/spelling/punctuation/flow/understanding.

We do have a few articles that overlap each other (all the mapping and basic gammak ones, for example) so the content overlap didn't seem to be an issue. There are some people who equate more content to more respect in the community so that line didn't really bug me like it did others.

That said, it (and the other article) is missing the MS additions of featured articles, videos and screenshots (which all give you an achievement and thus, more MS too).

The fact is that my article gives my own personal oppinion on Makerscore, which makes it different enough from Kentona's in my oppinion.

Bad feedback is always better than no feedback. It means that there's at least something interesting about what I did. Though frankly i'm a little suprised that this simple article got so much attention. (ie. I didn't set out to upset so many people when I decided to write this.)

I guess I'll have more eyeballs on me when, and if, I write a new article. So I'll try to me more careful to write something more informative. (Though, as I said, I think a video on how to do something might be useful.)

Weeeeeelllllll...the article, I didn't find so informative, but the comments in response to it, ten times as informative as this article and Kentona's article combined, so in a round about way, you kind of succeeded in giving the site an informative page about makerscore.

Also, I agree with nhubi that the number doesn't equate to respect, though I think it can be more reasonably said that it equates to experience in the community. You see, you need to do things to increase that number, and doing things increased experience. MS is how long we've been grinding RM experience!
I see, makerscore is a very delicate thing. :D
