My only complaint is how Deckiller still hasn't provided me with the list of "bugs" that he keeps mentioning. :(

I have had one other person mention lag on another site, have confirmed with 10 other people that they had no lag (including some artists from my wife's side who played it) so I guess I don't know how to help on that side. Even on my crappy old laptop it runs at a smooth 60 FPS.

There was one bug I warned about in the thread, the Synth one, and how to avoid it (since you need to do something the complete opposite of the system to get it) but other than that I still really want to know what this list was so I can fix it. :(

I didn't realize one avoidable crash bug meant the entry would be shelved, so kinda sad no one finished it (especially due to the overall length, there are several pretty lengthy dungeons we put a lot of effort into!)
I think if I remember correctly, GRS and Decky played far then tried synthing/some forest bug but lost their progress. And for Decky's case, Lag.

I played your game again after getting the synth bug but it was one of the last ones so I didn't get that far :<

Not sure about Liberty, it was mostly a time restriction I believe. The entries will get full LPs/Reviews anyway since there's no more time restriction and everyone can play it leisurely.

It was the synthing, the lag in the forest, and various combos/button inputs not working. I would hit the combo buttons and nothing would happen, or I would hit the combo buttons in order and they wouldn't register on screen.

I know the one Synth bug, can't speak for lag in the forest (can lag be considered a bug if it's not common?) without seeing it (odd other games didn't lag up since the map doesn't have additions besides the particle engine, so just plain old VXAce mapping.)

As for the combo buttons not registering, you need to pace it with your attacks (think like a fighting game) - if you're sure it was a bug I can make a simple version that displays an input timer and we can test, but this is not something anyone else has mentioned.

The place in the forest where you learn to synth isn't even halfway through the Forest dungeon, the first of 4 dungeons. No one even beat the first boss or even unlocked any extra classes or anything. T.T

The lag was probably just my machine; that may have explained why I had difficulty with the button inputting.

Perhaps I had too many things open? That's why I gave the benefit of the doubt in my scoring, for the most part.

I plan on reviewing the top 5 entries, so I'll be giving it another go once I'm no longer burned out from games.
I just noticed the article text says 23 entries made it but there were 24, 21 not counting the judges entries

Boutalles was one of the last games I played during crunch time. When I started to experiment with the synthesis menu after dinking in the forest for a bit the very first thing I tried did a CtD. Mix that with not saving and the wind from my sails evaporated. I can tolerate and enjoy bugs (I play Sonic 2006, Binding of Isaac, and Paradox games, hell the changelog for Paradox games is some of the funniest shit I read) but CtDs are my kryptonite and nothing saps my will to play games like they do.

Well, I'm glad my game wasn't hated on too much. I did expect a lot, lot worse. Some of the problems mentioned were fixed after the deadline, save for that nasty one in the final dungeon. My bad..

But I'm really stoked that everyone who won did win because their games looked freaking fantastic, so well done guys!

Not sure what to say, I included a notice in the contest thread about the bug specifically and how to avoid it for the judges. I was surprised you hadn't saved, but after that many games I'm sure you just wanted to be done. :)
Sorry, I'm (poorly) trying to articulate my experience with the bug and my actions when I hit it. I didn't know about the bug either until it was too late; I avoided as much information about the games as I could so that it wouldn't affect my opinion when I played them. In reflection it feels like half the problem was just bad circumstances that made an annoying bug even worse.
Woot, 5th place! Congrats to all the other winners!
You deserved it!

Oh, my! I'm speechless... >_<; Seriously, I have a bunch of mixed feelings on me right now. I mean, I usually speak against this kind of contests, because while there's always lots of potential shown in them, I think RMN shouldn't encourage games made in a hurry. I can't really speak for others, but my entry is something that I'm not entirely happy with, and would have never released at this stage if not for the Snoopy badge incentive... And well, it's certainly not something that I expect to win with. xP

But you know, paying close attention to this event, I came to realize that the feedback received through it, made it totally worth it to join even with just a two weeks effort. I mean, duh! right? Feedback is always important. I always encourage it, but I rarely ever give it (or receive it, for that matter) so it's easy to underestimate how powerful it can be; But I digress... What I really want to say is that this was a wonderful experience. All thanks to the awesome team of judges that ran this event, and went the extra mile posting LPs, this podcast, and everything else that is yet to come. Thanks a lot guys! You're full of awesome! o/

On more personal note, thanks a lot for choosing me as the winner. I don't know yet how to feel, having such awesome (and better) entries such as 'Boutalles', or 'Adventure Ace' behind me. Or even others that I enjoyed and had plenty of effort put in them too, such as 'In search of dragons' 'Legend of Ace, 'Lucidity' and 'The only one left' ...But, thanks, (specially to Nessiah) for putting so much faith on me. I'm deeply humbled. ;_; ...I'm gonna hide under a rock now. I'll be back in a year.

Now you should feel pressured to make a million awesome VX Ace games for the community. I'm helpful, right?

I had a lot of issues with lag, bugs in the battle system and that crashing bug the first time I played.
The battle bugs were to do with defending. Sometimes when I defended it would get stuck on defend and I couldn't get out of it no matter what button I pressed. I had to run from the battle and retreat. Then I'd be locked out of the menu too. I finally figured that pressing either -Home-, -Insert- or -Page Up- when out of battle would sort of fix it, but it got very annoying when trying to switch characters or use items in battle. (You'll be able to see it when I post up the LP - tomorrow some time).

Also, yeah, I encountered a bit of lag, but not enough to break the game. I did like that if you got a game over you were just thrown out of battle, but the issues I had with the battles dragged its score down a bit for me. It still rated in my top five, though.

I really liked the characters and what I saw of the story, but there were some issues.

(Another thing I had a problem with was that the money amounts from killing monsters wasn't enough to really allow me to purchase enough harvesting items to make up for the ones I used to find stuff to synthesize. And that made it hard to make better items which made it harder to survive battles...)
