Holy hello! It's been 10 years already of the current site being up and around so it's time to celebrate!


Wow, 10 years... A lot of us weren't here ten years ago (myself included) and in that time we've seen so many faces come and go. So much talent, drive, initiative and invention. An incredible amount of dreams coming true, people pulling through and crafting, creation and positivity.

We've all grown as people, all helped craft a community where being open and friendly is the goal, and shared our hopes and dreams with each other, no matter where we come from or how old we are. And some of us are pretty damn old. ;p

Which brings us to the crux of this event - RMN is getting old, so let's reflect a while on where we came from and what inspired us to become game developers in the first place - whether it be hobbyist, professional or somewhere in-between. It's time to put on those nostalgia glasses and go back to where it all began. It's time to go...



A I M
The aim of this event is to create a simple retro-styled game over 10 days in celebration of RMN's 10th birthday!

Retro-styled can include either the gameplay, sound/music design, graphics or plot/story design. There are many games out there that count as retro, in different genres and with different visuals, so don't think you need to make a FF1 look-alike in order to hit the theme. Early Sonic, Mario, Leisure Suit Larry, Tetris, Zelda, Contra, Kirby, Megaman, Donkey Kong, Pong, Bomberman, Castlevania, Carmen Sandiago, Street Fighter, Alex the Kidd, Pacman... these are all games that hit the mark for retro. So don't feel as though you're limited to just jRPGs in this.

R U L E S
- You may start making your game on Saturday 3rd of June.
- Games must be completed before Monday the 12th of June.
- You may start collecting ideas, graphics, etc before the starting date, but no actually starting the game itself (in engine).
- Open to any engine, genre, etc as long as it abides by site rules.
- You may create a game page for the game, but to submit you will need to upload the file itself to the event page. Check FAQ for a how-to guide on submitting to the event.
- The game must abide by the theme of the event.

B O N U S
If you'd like to, there's a bonus challenge of making a game in 10 hours instead of 10 days. What this means is you must create the game within 10 hours over the course of the 10 day period, but that you can only use 10 hours of game development to make the game in. Again, it should abide by the theme of the event, and site rules regarding games. If you do take part in this challenge, make sure to note in the title of your game download that it's a 10 hour game by using the 10H tag.

Nope! You can go for more than one game, or be part of a team in one game and make your own personal game too. Hell, make a 10 day game and a 10 hour game! Go for gold!


How does resource???


How do I submit my game to the event?
Make sure that you have the game folder compressed in some way. You can do this a few ways. If the engine you use has an auto-compiler, that is one way. If it does not, download a free program like 7zip and right-mouse click on the folder the game is in, choosing the Compress Folder/Create Self-Extractor choice.

Ultimately you need a single file that holds all of your game's data, resources and misc to upload. Then on this page hit Submit in the top-right. Choose Browse to find your file and then submit it for upload. Leave the page open until it redirects to another page. Your game is now accepted to this event.

I don't have any screenshots, but, I figure I've about four hours left of dev-time for the 10-hour deal. I'm kinda disinclined to also do a ten-day game?

*Edit: Aaaaaannnnnnd DONE! With, maybe, three hours to spare? Hrm. There might be at least one thing I can think of off the top of my head to tweak?

Here's a screenshot of the manual, retro games had no tutorials when I was younger. It was all in the manual.


Nearly got RPG Maker to use DnD rules, currently dealing with the party creation.

Ok, I think that i'm almost ready to start my ten hours and will do so after my return from work and ten hours of sleep.
I got a problem, tho. I can either use 20xx, which has broken midi playback and i don't know my way around events and database, or RM2k, in which i can't playtest and need to export the game every time. I'm leaning 20xx, becuz it can have 10x10 window.

the way the ds tilesets are set up is really terrible and they annoy me greatly!! but i don't have time to fix them!!



includes a reference to the very first VX game on the site, and my first game uploaded to the site, Versus Xerza. (Also the first game on the site where your characters have stats.) if anybody can tell me what it is i'll put you in the game as a secret boss (or in another game if somebody figures it out during play, which is far more likely)

Thanks Craze, I was just being dumb. I did my linework, then traced it with the binary tool, haha. My linework was better but oh well, my game is meant to be funny anyways. I like the Ds grass it looks nice. Also what do you think Smooch should do cause instant death or explosions? XD

I'm not gonna lie. I literally typed up my font in a different program, saved as a .png, and I'm drawing my letters from that image manually. I'll send you what I've got.
Gah. Because of how I handle poison and stuff (Force action based on state, to deal exactly the specified damage), I can't exactly make a slow regen-over-time-even-on-field item that works the way I want. :(

Oh well.

First floor is done, some enemies set up...I need to make the second floor a lot more mazelike than this.

Aside from that, everything is going smoothly. I have a nice basic town, some shops, and everything else works nice.

Retro fonts are difficult in Ace. You can either use Yanfly and a bitmap font and make sure that the font size of everything is the same as the bitmap's font size (or a multiple of), or you can use an Sfont Script, but that'll require you to make an image file out of the font, which has caused me to have to make like half a dozen of these for different fonts to find one that fits well in Ace -_-

I tried making the game use Fixedsys as a font, but it just made the game crash for some reason.

Not too huge a deal though, the original font looks retro enough with my menu style and my ALL-CAPS DIALOGUE.
Finished my entry, I'm pretty sure I used up less than 10 hours but it could be 11, 12... Oh well.

Custom shitty MIDI music by me, but the graphics are shamelessly stolen from the Great Momeka and the Venerable Sated.

The whole thing was semi improvised, but it was a lot of fun.
Let me know if there's a game breaking bug I'll at least correct but it should be more or less ok.
I'm making a surreal Adventure game where you explore the inside of a mansion! The main gameplay mechanic of the game is your ability to visit Memory Lane (literally). While there, you'll be able to explore the MC's mind and gather clues from his future, present and past.

Here's a little piece I've composed for the game:


5/4, baby! I'm mainly using sound-fonts from Majora's Mask for the game's soundtrack. For this one, I used some Stray Fairy SEs in order to create a more surreal atmosphere. It's been a really fun process so far!

Everything seen here is VERY WIP, of course!

Here's what I got done on the first day:
- Drew about 100 squares of tiles. It's the first time I'm creating 16x16 assets.
- Drew and animated the sprite of the MC and a house cat.
- Composed 3 full tracks + a couple of concepts/ideas.
- Drew two shadow effects for the darker areas of the mansion.
- Designed around 20 maps to test out the tiles.
- Lots of brainstorming.

In terms of plot, you'll basically explore a mansion that's been cursed by Wraith Satan (WIP name). Your goal is to find all of the house cats of the mansion in order to break the curse that's been bestowed upon Master Francis Silvagunner.

You'll also visit hell in one form or another.

I tried this too, also crashed! I gave up after that lol
I think I should give up, I don't even have walls. Maybe if I stack the sprites on top of each other I will have a wall, lol.

SMBX question to anybody here who's used it:

How do I use the teleports to go to another level?

Seems like no matter how I try to set it up, it just doesn't teleport out of the map. I'm trying to use no world map, although if I have to I will. I made a world.wld so I could set intro.lvl as the starting point. So when you open SMBX and start the project it opens to intro.lvl. It's a mock title screen. You choose the new game path, and it's supposed to be a warp square that teleports you to 1.lvl, which is the main map of the game.

I'm typing 1.lvl in the box for warping to level. I've tried the normal starting point, I've tried warp 8 and putting a warp numbered 8 on the place I want to go. I've tried instant and pipe style warp(why didn't I try door yet?). I've even tried creating a world map, linking the 2 levels up with a path, but nothing happens. At first it wouldn't do anything when touching the warp square. But now for some reason when I walk into the warp square, it makes the character run to the left??

I remember trying to do this years ago and couldn't figure it out then either.

Any help would be appreciated. I've tried looking online and in the help files, tutorials, I can't seem to find the answer. And it's probably something simple.
