Description

The 2011 RMN Summer Games is a game-making contest, the goal of which is to make a game within one month. A theme will be announced at the start of the contest to ensure equal footing and development time for all participants, but otherwise just have fun making games!

-The contest will begin on August 1st 12:00 AM GMT and run until August 31st 11:59 PM GMT. Entries must be completed during this time frame.
-You may work with a team of any size to make a game.
-Your game may be made in any engine and may be any genre, not just an RPG.

-You ought to have permission to use all art, music, or other content. Rips will be frowned upon. How the content was created does not matter so long as you have the rights to use it.
-The game should run on Windows XP or higher. The judges should not require any additional components to play your entry.
-Show good sportsmanlike conduct towards your competitors.
-Most important rule: Have fun!

-All games will be required to loosely incorporate the theme (TBA. The theme could be anything from a setting to an abstract concept.)
-Entries started before the allotted time will be frowned upon. Entries submitted after the deadline will not be accepted. Extensions will be granted only in extraordinary circumstances. PLAN AHEAD.
-All entries will require a gameprofile.
-You must submit your entry to the event page (using the submission tools below).

I just like to share an anecdote of me playing through the games in the last event. I decided to be nice and download these "rtps". Turned out that's harder than it looks. The XP and VX ones are easy enough and accessible through the official websites but since rm2k and rm2k3 are illegal programs finding those RTPs proved to be a bit more of a challenge (by googling).

In the end the 2k rtp was easy enough to get my hands on. (and with my ancient knowledge I also knew not to download rtp1.3 or whatever) However with the 2k3 rtp I downloaded at least four different files of different filesizes that all claimed to be the rtp but in the end I think I did not get a single 2k3 game to run due to missing files.

So kids, what do we learn from this?

THAT ALL OF YOU WHO DON'T MAKE YOUR GAMES FUCKING INDEPENDENT SHOULD BE SHOT.

That's what we learn.

The RTP's are at RMRK(just saying) for 2k/3
Not on this page it isn't: http://crankeye.com/?page=downloads maybe hidden somewhere else?

I think the argument isn't so much, "This requires the RTP! Get it here!", it's a question of having a game be able to stand on it's own (hence the usage of the term "stand-alone") so that anyone (Especially contest judges!) can run it.

(I know, I know Marrend.) Shinan, the download from that link you procided, the 2k3, it comes with the RTP. (I had to reinstall the 2k3 yesterday actually!) So yes, I fail.
can't wait to see who wins~~~

I just hope the game is a binary file so I can download it easier.

Umm, since when are games in rpgmaker binary? O_o?

@Adon: From my understanding, a binary file is the "EXE" (executable) file. The executable should be part of the ZIP file. Or whatever other compression method is going to be inevitably used.

Then again, it would be mildly humorous to me if everyone build self-extracting executables because of the statement "The judges should not require any additional components to play your entry."
Everyone has winrar....right? o_o

Regular zipfiles have built-in support in Windows (at least in XP and onward) so those should work within the rules given.

But then the judges have to have Windows XP or higher.
How do I know none of you are operating on Linux?
Do our projects now have to include an operating system?
But then you will need hard drives to install them to.

Standard ZIP format should work fine on just about any computer. It's a given that the judges will be using Windows, XP is just the earliest version you should support.

This really isn't that complex, basically you give the judges 1 file, the steps to install or run the game should be pretty straight forward, and you're set.

If you think that this unfairly targets 2K3, keep in mind that we can't use licensed content for this contest, and 2K3 by itself is unlicensed in most our hands, so just be glad it's even allowed.

(If we this much energy into our games instead, imagine how much better they'd be?)

I 'll agree with what Anaryu is saying, but, for hilarity purposes:

This is what I'm getting from Dyhalto's string of bits, text-wise:

Wasted way too much of my time on that!

As for the hard drives, i'm sure the participants will be willing to donate (after all this hard work they'll want recognition!).
