Description

This year marked the 50th year of the first Pride marches to take place. With so much that has been going on in the world - so much discrimination, hate and ignorance - it's time we step up and shout proudly about who and what we are!

Often various groups are under-appreciated and under-represented.

Our identity is important, and thus, this event to create games with more representation of those who get a bum deal when it comes to this shit. Our culture, our race, our sexuality, our gender. Who we are matters and we deserve to be represented in ways that we can appreciate and share with others.

And thus begins a day for each year taken to throw open the doors of ignorance and expose the world to our flaming amazingness. Or something. Let's gammak!

Theme:

REPRESENTATION

- Game must be created during that time.
- Must have an accepted game page so that you may submit.

SUBMIT ENTRIES BY MAKING A GAME PAGE, ADDING THE DOWNLOAD THERE THEN SUBMITTING IT HERE.

I don't think it needs to be said, but I'm going to say it now so no-one can say I didn't say it earlier - this event is not about representing hate groups nor racial groups that are already over-represented. It's to draw attention to those groups that are under-represented in media. So if I find a game about Brittany the straightest, whitest Cali teen who ever Cali'd and how she is falling in love with Stevie McWhiteboy, the straightest and whitest Cali boi who ever Cali'd, or a game about being a cop who gets to beat down black folk, I will revoke your ability to gammak. Somehow. I'll find a way. So help me Lord Aremen, I will.

Thank you, that is all.

I changed my game idea from "short melancholic puzzle adventure" to "short upbeat puzzle adventure" because I lack the emotional depth to make something melancholic that doesn't come off as cheesy.
Huh...With a long time limit too. Consider me interested.

I might very well consider making something for this, even though "Diverse and proud" isn't really my forte, writing wise. Most of my diverse characters tend to be on the subtle side (Probably too subtle, I doubt anyone has picked up on most of them).

Which probably has something to do with the fact that even as an Asexual (an orientation that's basically invisible), I don't particularly mind in my own personal case. Likely because it's a step up from the bullying in high school. Being "invisible" kind of sucks, but it hurts me less than being bullied/harassed/attacked.

...That and I don't know how to represent my own Aspergers-ness. XD

I'll see if I can come up with a compelling narrative despite my inexperience.

...Maybe I can make a game based off of that fan-made World of Darkness Princess The Hopeful module I loved reading about. Hmm...

aegis, dunno if this will help, but in the game i keep trying to make (ko cupid), aspen (the lady as my avatar) is ace but doesn't really realize that or have terms for it. as she talks with the people she meets throughout the game, she and her childhood friend tallis start to see themselves in other people and learn the terms and self-love they need to accept them selves as ace and demi respectively.

you can be "subtle" without hetwashing, basically -- put the subtleness in the gentleness of the self-realization, not in hiding it. :)

If you decide you need a proofreader send me a PM!

I want to make something incredibly gay and pink! I have this idea in my mind for a battle system where the battle music changes tempo/pitch/instruments based on the moves you use or states you're in I think could be cute. If there's anybody who does music who is interested send me a pm also!

Otherwise, I'll just work alone~ Here is hoping I have learned enough from previous events how to get something nice done fast!

I appreciate the offer; wanna revise my first draft a bit, but will send it you to. As for your idea, seems great! I like the idea of altering the music based on different battle factors. :o

Agreed. I feel I do that with my Raziya and being on the autism spectrum. For non-Pride games, also her being trans. I agree with making things like that subtle, where people can piece together the clues to the puzzle. Or, otherwise, not beating the audience over the head with it. Characters and people are more than labels, and representation is important to show that yes, marginalized folks are normal.

yeah it all really depends. ko cupid is about gaybies exploring themselves so it takes what's honestly a really basic approach to queerness. what you brought up at the end of your post is i think is the most ideal approach for fiction in general. some stories are about queerness, some stories have queerness.

https://loveconquersallgames.itch.io/getinthecarloser get in the car loser falls in the latter category i think -- it's explicit that sam is lesbian and valentin is genderqueer, and they're also trying to save the world.

it's important to use "and" when working with queer characters, i think, because there's a tendency (for cishet authors especially) to frame it as more of a "they're a lawyer, but also gay!" instead of "they're a gay laywer". does that make sense lol??? representation looks like tokenism or just poorly done when it's LOOK IT'S THE BEST FRIEND, BUT THEY'RE GAY THIS TIME
I hope it's alright that the minority group I'm focusing on is not gender or sexual orientation related.

Here's what I plan to do (posted on the Discord channel before):

The game would be focused on dialogues. You would play as myself, an essay writer. My next book will be about wiccans, a group of "sorcerers of modern times". I sent a letter to a wicca female member who's living with her group in an isolated forest in Wales. My trip there will make me get some ideas for my essay.

I'm just unsure on the main style:
- A walking simulator with NPCs introducing the wiccan culture to you? (Already did a walking simulator for Valentiny. Satisfying for the visuals, but it was rather bland after all...)
- An horror game with crazy fanatics? (That would be fun, but horror games are not my cup of tea)

Fflo: For the horror game idea, I'd recommend against the Wiccans being fanatics. However, two variants come to mind -- a) the fanatics are crazy religious folks against the Wiccans or b) if fantastical, the fanatics are of a demonic or eldritch entity that the Wiccans are opposed to, and are trying to seal?

neither or karsu or i. our cast is incidentally racially diverse but the focus is on poverty and political representation. it's an incredibly broad theme.

Prosecution for belief comes to mind. This could center around a solitary group being ostracized by a group who doesn't understand them. I always like the idea of personifying the protagonist as faulty but essentially good, then having them lose despite their best effort. This makes the player feel the loss. Since the point is to represent a minority, what better way than to make the player feel for them.
Just remember, witches are a non-consumer category.

A bit too broad, perhaps. I was initially doing something relating to capitalism (minimum wage earners getting spare change for a day's hard work), but it was kinda hard not to go straight into the "Communist Propaganda" side of things...

To be fair, if you make communist propaganda I will play it. XD

You could lean in and make it part of your aesthetic for whatever story you want to tell. Soviet propaganda has a very distinct style to it you could take advantage of. Maybe be... a wee bit careful with it, because you know... soviet union... but it could work, I think.

I guess I should share my idea with you guys, maybe it will help undecided people come up with ideas of their own.

So, my main character is an expert "matchmaker", her specialty is bringing people together and forming romantic couples. She gets called to a beautiful tropical island to help form couples between the island's youth. There are four guys and four girls in the island, and the chief is adamant that you only pair guys with girls and vice-versa.

However, as the matchmaker explores the island and discovers the preferences and feelings of the young singles, she realizes it is impossible to make everyone happy unless the chief allows two gay couples (two guys, and two girls) to be together, and then she has to convince the chief to let go of his preconcieved notions of how love should work so they can all be happy.

At first, I intended to make it sad and sober, but then I realized it would work better if I made it mostly upbeat and funny with a few sad moments here and there.
I'm admittedly conflicted about any contribution I could make to this event. At first, I read the title, read the description, and interpreted "create games with more representation of those who get a bum deal" very broadly.

My original plan was to do a game with an autistic main character, and I had a number of ideas for how that could be evident in the gameplay mechanics. Re-reading the description and comments so far, it's very clear this is a pride event first and foremost.

My concern is I'd be coming in as a straight white guy and hijacking a very important platform to selfishly discuss my own agenda about neurodiversity. I don't think that would be appropriate or fair, and I think that would dilute the message of what would otherwise be a very concentrated cause.

Wait... I'm a straight white dude myself. I thought it was okay as long as we were making games about marginalized groups (in a non-patronizing way, of course)... isn't it okay?
