Description

Hi there, welcome to another event to celebrate RMN's birthday! This year the site turns 12 years old!

You all voted and the winner of the poll was...
Abrupt Ending

An abrupt ending is still an ending... of sorts. It's not as simple as shutting down the program - but is more along the lines of just cutting the story at a place where some things are rounded off but other things are still left hanging. An easy example would be if getting out of Midgar was the end of FF7 or if Chrono Trigger ended when you got back to your own time. Another example is if a game ended after the hero loses a cinematic, cannot-win battle instead of carrying on the story.

Rules
- Start making on the 8th of June
- End making at Midnight (site time) of the 16th of June
- Game must be at least 10 minutes long
- Full games only
- Any engine, any assets. If you intend to make graphics for the game, you may start now, and planning on paper outside the engine is allowed. No in-engine starting though!
- No game pages necessary. Just upload straight to the page.
- Be as silly or as serious as you like, as long as it falls within the rules of the site.
- Games must have an abrupt ending!

Prizes
- A 40 MS badge for any games that follow the above rules.
- Three random people will get to choose a game from Liberty's Humble list (there's literally hundreds...)

Uploading and Timezones
To upload to this page, sign up below. When your game is done, compress it into one file (via winrar, 7zip or engine self-compression) then hit the Submit link in the top-right of this page. Browse to find your file, then hit upload. Wait until the page redirects. Note: you can only upload 450MB of data, so please make sure that you remove any excess files.

To see when the event starts and ends in your timezone, click on your name in the black bar at the top of the page, pick Account in the top-right, then click on Settings and add your timezone offset. Save and you will note that on the event page the date/time has changed!

Unfortunately the second video was lost due to Twitch deleting vids after a set amount of time.

What if I were to tell you that my entry will end before it begins?

"Let's do the time warp again ...."

Sure.

Cool! Then it means I can use the the story I have in mind!
Thanks for answering!

I hope I can actually finish something AT ALL ToT
Decided to work in RPGmaker 2000, because if the game is short, why not.

Mods above, I've been poking around the engine a bit just to look at the options it has (I'm not actually making anything, just looking), and I have exactly one thing to say.

"What the hell, RPGmaker XP?!"

How the heck is it that 2000 has more and better status effect options than XP does?! I remember feeling so limited by XP's states and skills even when I actually started getting decent at the engine. Then I take one look at 2000 and am filled with "Oh hey, that's a neat option! I have some neat combat ideas I could use that for!"

Seriously, my frustration with having started with RMXP just keeps growing the more I see of the other engines!

Like...After the event, I might actually make a short dungeon crawler out of some of these ideas, because why the heck not. The engine's simple enough that I'm forced to get clever, while also limiting the amount of fancy bells and whistles that can distract me from just making stuff.
This idea is so good. I'm tempted.
Yeah I kind of wish most event games were like this where there's a huge implication of things to come rather than being super contained. Sadly I'm tied up with my own project atm.
My current idea is some kind of "whodunnit" i.e. murder investigation ...
No visual gore, just "we found the dead body in the swimming pool. She was shot" or something.

Are there any rules regarding stuff like that? Or about police officers discovering DNA traces of ... two persons on a desk or something?

EDIT: I played "Clue" when I was still a teenager and it didn't scar me for live ... but I don't know what's acceptable on this site and what's not.

I think you would be perfectly fine doing heavy gore too. The site's not strict when it comes to mature content as long as it's not porn. So yeah should be perfectly fine to do a whodunnit on a site that allows horror games with much worse content.

Thank you for your clarification. So finding a splotch of blood or bloodstained tissue or knife won't be a problem, then.

And what about officers finding DNA traces indicating an intimate encounter between the victim and a suspect? Again, there won't be any details. Just a clinical discussion like "you said you barely know her but ...".
As long as it's not pornographic and in good taste it shouldn't be an issue as far as I know. A couple of games dealt with sexual themes in more tasteful ways and were allowed onto the site. You are neither describing it like an erotica would, nor with details, nor are you showing off pictures of the scene with details.

Some blood on weapons etc. is fine, too.

(another things that is a no-no is hate-speech or similar aimed at specific groups of people, even and especially under the guise of "oh but it's just for the lulz!" - which is not what you are going for. It's nice you are considering the rules, though!)

I'm already thinking on my submission.
The game's going to be a very classical dungeon-crawler, but, there's a little twist in it!
A regular dungeon-crawler is when heroes go through places and kill bosses. My dungeon-crawler will reverse the rules: you control monsters (an Ork, a Sahagin, a Succubus, a Dragon) and you will battle humans that live in the dungeon! This is going to be fun.

That sounds remarkably close to a game I wish existed ages ago.

Looking forward to seeing what you put out! :)
If you need inspiration there's always SaGa Frontier 1's ending for Blue's story!

Here's the final boss:

Does "Start making on the 8th of June" allow you to plan your game/search for resources etc. before the date?

Yup! They specified anything other than IN-ENGINE work is fine!
Collecting resources, planning and sorting ideas is fine! Starting on maps, for example, is not.

See:
