Description

Hi there, welcome to another event to celebrate RMN's birthday! This year the site turns 12 years old!

You all voted and the winner of the poll was...
Abrupt Ending

An abrupt ending is still an ending... of sorts. It's not as simple as shutting down the program - but is more along the lines of just cutting the story at a place where some things are rounded off but other things are still left hanging. An easy example would be if getting out of Midgar was the end of FF7 or if Chrono Trigger ended when you got back to your own time. Another example is if a game ended after the hero loses a cinematic, cannot-win battle instead of carrying on the story.

Rules
- Start making on the 8th of June
- End making at Midnight (site time) of the 16th of June
- Game must be at least 10 minutes long
- Full games only
- Any engine, any assets. If you intend to make graphics for the game, you may start now, and planning on paper outside the engine is allowed. No in-engine starting though!
- No game pages necessary. Just upload straight to the page.
- Be as silly or as serious as you like, as long as it falls within the rules of the site.
- Games must have an abrupt ending!

Prizes
- A 40 MS badge for any games that follow the above rules.
- Three random people will get to choose a game from Liberty's Humble list (there's literally hundreds...)

Uploading and Timezones
To upload to this page, sign up below. When your game is done, compress it into one file (via winrar, 7zip or engine self-compression) then hit the Submit link in the top-right of this page. Browse to find your file, then hit upload. Wait until the page redirects. Note: you can only upload 450MB of data, so please make sure that you remove any excess files.

To see when the event starts and ends in your timezone, click on your name in the black bar at the top of the page, pick Account in the top-right, then click on Settings and add your timezone offset. Save and you will note that on the event page the date/time has changed!

Unfortunately the second video was lost due to Twitch deleting vids after a set amount of time.

Meanwhile im still here with absolutely no ideas.
Don't feel bad, man. I just have waaay too much time on my hands at the moment, and when I over-focus, I churn out story and events real fast. It also helps when I'm not really taking it seriously either. XD
Thanks for the encouragement.

Make the start of a game with the hero party out to defeat the bad guy when after the obligatory cave dungeon another hero party you saw briefly defeats the bad guy off screen and your party just kinda calls it the day once they hear the news.

That's actually a good idea... But I wanted to go for something dark. Idk really. Thanks for the tip though :) (if you meant me)

Oh shit it already started.
Oh shit I just have 6 days.

That's exactly me.

Dark twist: After clearing the cave dungeon the party goes to the inn and during the inn ditty the bad guy drops their flying castle on the town the hero is staying at. Roll credits!

(throwing ideas around or workshopping them is fun and if it helps anybody then all the better!)

That's a cue for an abrupt ending!

That's a cue for an abrupt ending!
Something like this:

scene bg crime
coroner "She's dead, Jim."
pause 540
cop "Hey, look what I just found! {b}The murder weapon!!1111 eleven eleven{/b}"
killer "It was me, it was me!"
scene bg fireworx with Dissolve (10.0)
show fw_animation
pause 60
jump credits

The pause statements are required because the game has to be at least 10 minutes long.

My maps are almost finished.
I just have to do some database-filling (skills, items and equipment) and playtest everything.
Holy Moly. I'm basically done. (Good thing too, as work is starting up again on Friday, and there's a good chance my weekend will be pretty busy)

Major Story events are all done, combat balance and playtesting are basically done, and amazingly, despite it having a sudden abrupt ending, it really does feel like it's a satisfying length despite how short and abrupt it is.

I might actually make a gamepage for this after the event is done, which I was pretty sure I wouldn't want to do.

Still do to:
- One side story scene.
- NPCs at the pub/shop to make the world feel bigger than it is and to give some advice for the dungeons.
- Rejigger Difficulty Modes so that Easy can be blitzed through on Auto-battle, and Hard makes you panic and maybe grind just a little.
- Title screen.

To those of you who don't think you can finish...I believe in you! I'm sure you'll turn out something! :)
It'll be close if I make it.

I'm using my own game engine. I've got the game logic almost done, but the UI is all just super mocked-in and I still need to get the graphics and sound assets sorted out.
Well, my game's now playable from start to finish. I plan on doing another round of playtesting and maybe adding in some more content, but unless I'm hospitalized or something I shouldn't have any trouble making the deadline.

I also managed not to fill the game with .AVI files this time. Not sure if Liberty is planning on streaming these games, or anything but if she does I (hopefully) won't be super embarrassed this time around.

Good luck, I really hope you can pull this off.

This is my status:

The original idea was to have the hero(ine):
  • look for physical evidence and hand it over to the CSI team.
  • Check for blood and stuff using a black light thingy
  • Interview the suspects to learn about their back stories and motives

I could either concentrate on the first aspect (which is mostly done) and throw 2/3 of the game-I-wanted-to-make out of the window and probably make the deadline (the culprit would then just confess if confronted with, say, a smoking gun with his fingerprints on it), or I call it quits and make the game I really wanted to make. (Which would take several more weeks at least.)

Currently I'm inclined to take the later approach.

*Hits submit*

Very likely, I put more effort into creating a bad game than if I had made a semi-mediocre one.

I haven't got a single day to work on this so far. I would love to finish something during weekend but I have work both days and parties both evenings.

Happy Birthday anyway!
Dang, people beat me to it? I'm basically all done. Just doing one last playthrough on Easy to see if it's easy enough for easy peeps, and I'm basically ready to upload.

I'm going to experiment a bit further with the damage formulas after the event to see if I can fix Normal Attacks being kinda worthless, before I actually make a gamepage for this thing.

I've finished too!
(Well, I had to submit now. I think I won't be at home the next 2 days. The game may not be balanced but I think there won't be any bugs inside.)
Welp, I'm done. Hopefully this is how you package an RPGmaker2000 game for people.

I present to you all, walking amongst us...The Heroes that nobody asked for!

I sincerely hope you find this as amusing as I do. I don't know how my sense of humor will recover otherwise.

I hope she does. :P She gets a small shout-out in one line of my entry.
Yeah, there's no way that I can turn anything in that would fit in the deadline. I did gain valuable experience and stuff, though...Maybe the next event I try to participate in might go a little better.
Any chance we'll be seeing a deadline push?
