Description

Welcome to the Arcade Heroes Community Project/Event. In Arcade Hero, you, the community make the arcade games. Once all of the games have been submitted (deadline August 1, 2013), Space_Monkey will combine them to make a playable business simulator where you are the arcade owner with a catalog of games made by the community.

When finished, arcade owners will spend their hard earned coins to unlock and buy games from the submissions to put in their arcades.

Rules:

1. Do not talk about Arcade Club.Tell everyone you know.
2. Mak a gam in RPG Maker VX Ace. You can use VXAce Lite, a free version of VXAce.
3. Finish it by the deadline (AUGUST 1, 2013).
4. Submit a game alone or as a team.
5. Team can equal 1-infinity
6. Team cannot equal < 1
7. Try to make your game fit the world (8 bit-like).
8. Post what you are making so that we don't get 50 pac-mans.
9. Don't suck. I'll try to get a reward for the best ones.
10. Post the switches/variables you plan to use so we can keep a list of the ones that are taken/in-use displayed on the game page. ONLY TAKE WHAT YOU WILL NEED.
11. Try to limit your games to 10 events on a map. I'm not going to buy ace unless I have to.
12. Are you still reading? Go mak a gam champ.

Working on game. If anyone wants to submit a game for the arcade they still can, they just won't get an achievement badge?

ps. thanks for the submissions guys.
hell, if anyone else submits a game, let me know and I can retroactively apply the badge.
I will, but please don't give me a badge for it. The thing was about the time constraint. It loses its significance for me.

@giaks: Ah, Shift, right. I never think of Shift as a 'main' key. =P ...It's fun to go around burning slimes, and the title screen is awesome, btw; overall the graphics are pretty cool. My only true complaint is that sometimes the slimes spawn right below you and it's impossible not to take damage. I managed to get a score of 3356 before I got killed this way. =(

I figure the key bindings would probably be changed in Arcade Hero to make all the 'machines' uniform. I'm also not really sure why I used shift, just sort of happened I guess, ya know like it does. I think the music is what really makes the menu, the RMN music pack is great. Yeah I really enjoyed working with the limitations it did wear on me a bit so if that's your only true complaint, you are a far more forgiving person then I am. Thank you.

So I got a chance to play the games today. They were all super fun, I was looking forward to playing Fomar's game...maybe in Arcade Hero?

Solar Platypus -
Very fun, this game so much reminded me of my old Atari 2600 that I may bust it and slam down some hardcore TANKS and Congo Bongo this weekend. I did really enjoy the cleverness of the levels and I thought adding different attack patterns to the enemies was a nice touch, it totally caught me off guard. The music was awesome as well! This game really did feel like a old video game. I hope it makes it into Arcade Hero even if it's not a VX Ace lite game.

A Wizard's Quest -
I had never really thought about it before, however this is basically what I would imagine a turn based RPG arcade game to be. I was very impressed with the logical programming for the battle system, good usage of events, the interface was simple and had a good presentation. The fights felt epic - me at 10 HP vs. 140 HP...I'm hitting for 10, they're hitting for 4...I'm getting way off topic here, I thought it was a lot of fun.

Frikin' Frongs -
The first time I loaded this up I just watched in awe as all the frogs moved around on the screen, I didn't catch their nefarious little plan until it was to late. I have got say, I would probably be spending a lot of quarters on this game. Very smooth eventing, great animations, and all about the score. This was a very neat game.

Managed to play all of the submissions! Here are my thoughts, and a grade to go along with them.

Solar Platypus
Grade: 4/5
I had a lot of fun with this! I loved the atari style of the game and it posed a lot of challenges. It's not a 5/5, though, because I felt it was a bit on the short side, despite how the difficulty was pretty fair overall. The ending kind of confused me because it lasted so long and not much else was happining, so I almost thought the game bugged.

A Wizard's Quest
Grade: 2/5
Was the first game I played from these submissions, and unfortunately it didn't leave a good first impression. The intro text scrolls way too fast and it needs a way to skip it. The battle system, while a good idea, was horridly tedious to play though, and not only because your opponents have way more HP than you do, but because of that stupid AP system which limits my options. I would have tolerated it if it were exclusively used for special skills, but you even have it for basic attacks! The 1 point of AP you recover with Wait doesn't really cut it, either, and as a whole it feels too much like a handicap more than something to make the game challenging.
There is also some serious level/map design issues with this game. The town is so large and empty for what you need to visit, and the overworld was simply horrible. You are thrown out into a large, open sea and given no direction whatsoever. While I'm not against non-linearity, there is only 1 opponent that is beatable at the start of the game. Going into cave and getting your ass kicked at the start isn't fun.
Finally, your fight with the golem is bugged. The graphic for the battlers besides the wizard doesn't display, and once the golem brings me down to 0 HP, he keeps hitting me in an endless loop as oppose to triggering a game over. Sorry this is so long-winded, but there are so many problems with this game that need to be fixed.

Giant Lizardman From Outer Space
Grade: 3.5/5
Props on the title. It's hilarious in a random sort of way. I also like the little intro you've got going on, making this feel a bit more like a real arcade game. It's a bit dull, however, both visually and in terms of gameplay. From the visual side, the graphics look super compressed and blurry, which kind of looks ugly. Not to mention some bad color choices, like a green lizard wondering around an equally green environment. On the side of gameplay, you are pretty much fighting the same type of slimes over and over again. Just because the game revolves around killing slimes, doesn't mean you can't have variation. How about a slime that jumps around a bit? One that shoots projectiles, or takes more hits to beat? Even though you have different colors of slimes, none of them behave noticeably different from the other. The game also has some cheap tricks, such as spawning you right on top of a slime, to which you get hit beyond your control. Overall, however, it was a pretty neat game, and with some polish it could be much better.

Frikin' Frogs
Grade: 4/5
First of all, those animations are BOSS! You really managed to make this not look like an RPG Maker game at all, and I really felt like I was playing an arcade game! Almost nothing is wrong with it except for its hit-detection. Apparently those shots can only collide with the frogs from the top of their heads, and will otherwise pass right through their bellies. It makes the game somewhat needlessly difficult, but otherwise you did a great job!
Something to note, however. This was initially unplayable because the graphic files "Logo1" and "Logo2" were missing. I just replaced them with your title.
I'm aware of most of those problems, except for that infinite loop bug. I'm pretty sure I know what caused it though.

Did you install the patch I posted? It'll fix those nasty bugs for you. The patch will also increase Dgaro's attack a bit, make it so you regenerate 1 AP a turn, and made wait restore 2HP instead of 1.
I'll release another patch that fixes that loop bug though.

For those who missed it, you can find the patch here.

Edit: Oh wow, there's a lot of bugs left. Huh. Be sure to let me know if you find any more!

Patch #2~

This patch is mainly an annoyance reducer and bug fixer.
There is also a title screen ^-^
@Ratty: I'm glad you liked my 'game'. Yeah, that's tile-based hit detection for you. =/ It happens mostly with the bigger frogs since they move faster, but is easier to hit the others on the bellies... Also, sorry about that, I was testing from the editor all the time. ^^;

@Arandomgamemaker: I tried again with both patches, and is better, but you can still improve it... As a rule you need for each Wait command to be able to offset at least half the damage you can take in each situation. Against the first boss 2HP is fine, but against the Second boss it should be at least 3HP since he can easily do 6HP damage, and so on. Also Endr being the strongest hitter spends too much time buffing me, while Lona being the weakest doesn't heal me nearly as often. That's mean, man. Just mean... =(

I agree with Ratty in that the maps could be smaller. I think you can even fit the worldmap on a single screen and still look good... Your intro could also be shorter instead of prompting an option to read it. Without the intro you have even less of an idea of what you're supposed to do, so players shouldn't be able to skip that entirely. Oh, and the tutorial could be a book on Dgaro's house.

Some bugs still prevail, in fact I couldn't continue the game because after defeating the Ice Princess the Golem doesn't appear. =( ...Another bug I found is that after the cut-scene with Lona, I couldn't control my character. It kept moving on its own even in the worldmap. I guess there must be a rogue "Set move route" command there somewhere. Luckily it went away after a short while.
Thanks for the info! I'll release one more patch to *hopefully* fix the rest of those bugs. I'm really trying here :/

After I release the last patch, I'll probably make it into a full game sometime later.
and....Patch #3 (Sorry for all of these patches!)

This one fixes a lot more bugs, makes Endr use Buff less, improved Wait on later bosses, and makes ATK and MAG boosts actually work.

Here's praying there are no more bugs. ^-^
Endr buffing is nice, but, you know, he throws it when you're still being affected by it. And Lona never cares about your HP, so it made her unreliable. I will try with that new patch then C:. Last time, a demon/dragon/redguy killed me (didn't knew how much items did I had though, I used one 2xAtk that I don't even knew I had).

Anyway, I like all the games. A Wizard's Quest seems a lot of fun. Solar Platypus was great! And it's the only one I've actually passed (the others I think are probably endless as many arcade-games).
By the way AlterEgo, have you tried leaving some space below the character? It could help "centering" the "bounding box". Like some kind of offset.

I just wonder how will be in-game gamers hahahahahaha! What kind of nerds will play AWQ for example ahaha! J/K.

Salut,
Orochii Zouveleki
