Kids Design The Darndest Things 2
Make monster graphics from my 5 year old's designs



At the end of 2016 I held an impromptu event for you to create monster sprites and/or game art based on my then-7-year-old's crayon artwork. This time, I want you to make monster sprites and/or game art (battle sprites, concept art, facesets, charsets, ...whatever you want!) based on my 5-year-old's artwork.




In this short event we will:
  • Create pixel art version of these monster designs for use in RPG Maker
  • Come up with descriptions and movesets for these monsters
  • Submit them all to this event page
  • Vote on our favourite entries
  • Pick an overall fan-favourite entry


I will post the 11 designs below. The submission deadline is January 25th31st.

Submit your entries using the toolbar in the upper right, and then make a post showing them off in the comments below!



If you submit at least one monster, you will be deemed a participant and receive a Big Pig achievement worth 5ms. If you submit at least six monsters, you will receive an additional Spikey achievement worth 10ms. Participants who submit an entry for all eleven monsters will receive an additional Megalord achievement worth 15ms. That's 30ms in total!

The fan-favourite (as determined by voting after the event) will win the Chompy achievement worth 20ms.



Big Pig

"A very big blue pig with ice powers."


Brownguy

"He is small. He likes to break things."


Roar Dragon

"He has a super big roar! (the large R is his roar). He likes to eat ghosts and people."


Robit

"He got spikes on his head. He's very strong."


Spikey

"He is covered in super-spikey fur."


Monstery

"He flies and bites people."


Ymunwv

"He's got a really very long body."


Chompy

"He is superduper tall and he likes to chomp with his teeth."


Sunmagic

"He is a sun that uses magic spells. He has angry guys that help him."


Wiggleyarm

"He has long arms that grab you."


Megalord

"He is the boss monster. He is superduper strong! The strongest."

At the end of this event, the event page voting will open from January 26th until January 31st. This will be used to vote for our overall favourite submission! The artist will receive the Chompy achievement.

Also, starting on the 26th, I will create voting topics in the forums so that we can vote on each monsters' fan-favourite entry. There are no rewards for these voting rounds beyond self-satisfaction. I will update this section with links to the voting topics.

Important Alert: Frogge has been making very cool versions of the monsters but not sharing them in the comments and everyone should look at them~ I expecially liked his take on Spikey!

Here's a bad piggy for the event.
Yeah, it's not as awesome as the others.

(Btw, are the red things its eyes ? I used the heart-shaped thing on the drawing as its nose but it may be its eyes too...)
It's up to your interpretation! I figured the heart-shape was a nose too though.

I'm running way late but finally got my first one done, Robit! :DDDD



Absolutely loving what everyone has come up with so far! Red Mask's look surreal and amazing, and oh my god Gourde, that Megalord is super cool! :DDDDDDD

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Since I'm also a video maker now, I was thinking about making a video about this event. And instead of just featuring my art. I figured I'd feature the art made by others here as well in the video and of course showing there names next to their work.

I figure it should be fine since all these images are intended to be free to use in games. And since some games on this site wind-up having Youtube Letsplays, chances are some of these artworks would appear in a youtube video eventually anyway.

Point is I don't want the video just to be about my stuff I want the whole event experience to be in the video. Hope everyone is cool with that.

PS. When I show others art it will be a simple dislay with some chill videogame-esq music in the background. The only commentary I will give about said art is that they are all fantastic designs. Also I probably won't show everything since I gotta give viewers a reason to check out RMN but also because I want to post the video before the event ends so that a viewer if they want could join in on the RMN event.

@Gourd_Clae - Thats a great MegaLord it looks like an evil genie.

@Unity - Fantastic Robit! I love the details on the horns. And thanks for the compliment.

It's Robit! He's showing off his strength by carrying six boulders (Yes! Six whole boulders!) that are shaped like potatoes (for those food lovers out there, remember they're boulders they're not edible) on his head. He strong.

@Riderx40 - Those sprites are amazing! And congrats on being the first person to render all the characters. I love that you re-imagined Robit as a plant creature. Sun Magic is looking very majestic in his robes. MegaLord sunken head in his chest looks very menacing. Spikey and Monstery are very creepy. All of them are great!

@Unity - Your Browng is easily my favorite version of the character so far.

@Muffle - That image got me hungry so I ate some potatoes. I like how you integrated the character bio into the art. Good thinking!

@Gourd_Clae - Love the colors reminds me of candy :D

I think Chompy and Roar Dragon are the least represented so far. Just thought I'd mention.

Thanks for the comment, RedMask. You saying my art looks like Earthbound is a huge compliment to me. I never truly try to mimic the style, but Earthbound has always been a huge inspiration for me.

So Megalord having 8 eyes and all made me think of a particular mask type that also sometimes has 8 eyes.

Anyway my take on MegaLord's face takes a bit of influence from a Grebo War Mask the Grebo/Kru live in the African countries of Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire.

I also see a bit of a childhood character of my own in the design of its arms :)



@PsiSteve - No problem my friend :D
I like the new sprites, the idea you had to make Wiggleyarm goopy is a nice touch.
Sunmagic's dazed look adds some cool personality. It looks like he has more power than he can handle.
And the idea that Robit appears to be malfunctioning from cut wires is a neat addition as well.

Woah, @RedMask. That MegaLord's mid-section is terrifying in a good way. I feel like it is taking my soul. I really like how you made his face too.

Here is Ymunwv. He's inspired by Gameboy and I attempted me make him look metallic with sparkles. Oh, and his middle finger hands are now balloons!

I feel like the timeline is fine. I'm not sure about everybody else, though. The short time to make these kind of motivates me to get them done faster. Either way, I'm fine with any amount of time. I'm just having a blast making these and seeing other people's work.

And the bonus monsters look amazing!!!
