Description

Is there any RMN event that you're sad you missed? An event you loved and wish you could take part in again? An event you started making something for but didn't finish?

Pick a previous RMN event from the following list and use its theme to make a new game OR finish a game you started for any of them!

  • Pick any theme you want from the list section.

  • Any of the original rules from the event you pick (other than the ones specified on the list) are optional, but please make sure to abide by the rules for this event.

  • The timeframe is also the same for everyone regardless of which event you pick. Even if you pick one of the birthday events where you had to make something under a certain number of hours, for example, you will have the whole month to work on it regardless, and the original time limitations are fully optional.

  • Rewards and achievements from the original events do not apply to this one. The only achievements you get are the ones from this event.

  • Non-gammak events, events that can't be replicated (swap in the middle, theme roulette, mcbacon jam etc...) and a few others (resurrect the dead, no-rm event, release something) have been filtered out, and cannot be picked for this event.

  • Submissions must have a game page and be at least 10 minutes long. Make sure you put which event you picked from the list on your gamepage!

  • Teams are allowed.

  • Any engine and any resources.

  • A Rainbow of Posi2vity: A game with positive LGBT+ representation that also uses a rainbow from the event page as the primary color palette.
  • 15 Years of RMN: 5 maps, 5 characters, 5 items, 5 spells, 5 collectibles.
  • Muffle's 1-Dungeon RPG Game Jam: Make a game with at least one safe place (town/hub etc), only one dungeon, at least one boss, and most importantly a prominent lizard.
  • Jingle Jangle Jam: Make a game based on a Christmas song.
  • RMN Commonplace Book: Make a game based on one of the prompts from HP Lovecraft's Commonplace Book (available online).
  • 14th Birthday: Refer to the original event page for a list of things that need to be included.
  • 1.44 Floppy Disc Drive: Make a game under 1.44MB in size.
  • Any Seasons of RMN event: Make a game based around either one of the four seasons of your choice, or all four seasons in one game.
  • Kill the Cutie!: Create a cute game that turns dark and twisted.
  • 50 Days of Representation: Make a game representing a minority group.
  • Valentiny Event: Make a romance themed game taking place on only one map.
  • A Rainbow of Positivity: Make a game that is positive in nature and focuses on either a main character who is LGBT+ or LGBT+ as a theme.
  • Abrupt Ending Party: Make a game that ends abruptly.
  • Twisted Fairy Tales: Make a game based on a fairy tale, but with a dark twist.
  • Retromania: Create a simple retro-styled game.
  • Winterruption: Structure the game to follow only sidequests, or have a short story as an aside to the quests, but the main component of the game, the main focus, must be the quests.
  • A Halloween Horror: Refer to the original event page for a list of things that need to be included.
  • RMN 9th Birthday Bash!: 3 maps, 3 characters.
  • RMN Birthday 2015: Make a game with the theme of self-inserts and cameos of other RMN members.
  • Game Name Game: Pick a game name from this thread and make a game based on it.
  • Game Chill 2013: Design a single winter-themed dungeon for the player to navigate through. You are required to include in this game at least 3 items from the following list, in some way, shape or form: Gingerbread Men, Prayer, Frosty the Snowman's hat, Hockey, Fancy dinner party, Bing Crosby
  • All Hallows' Event 2013: One of the following: Ghost Stories, Survival Horror, Monster Attack, Halloween Comedy, or Nonfiction Horror.
  • All Hallows' Event: Anything related to Halloween!
  • RMN's 5 Year Anniversary 5-hour: Badaptations. Bad video game adaptations of TV shows, movies, songs, comics, etc. You can't make an adaptation of another video game, though!
  • 2011 RMN Summer Games: Surrealism: movement that attempts to express the workings of the subconscious and is characterized by fantastic imagery and incongruous juxtaposition of subject matter.
  • RMN 4th Birthday: "Sequels that should never be made, but that we will make anyways."
  • Weekend Gamemaking Binge: The themes are Disco and Fire.
  • Scary Movie: Adapt a scary movie into a game.
  • Game Gale 2010: Escape (from prison, an alien spaceship, your boring job, a bad relationship, whatever)
  • Game Chill 2009: Your game must directly involve two opposing ideals, forces, or elements. Examples would be magnetic polarity, lightside vs. darkside, etc. BUT your game must allow you to play both sides.

Cool event.
Maybe it's a good chance to revive the dead.
It begins...

Edit: I have made a character sprite and he is rapidly approaching your destination.

I planned out some stuff before the start, then immediately threw it out at the start and went in another direction.

Doing this like a true RM dev.

I am immensely tempted to do this myself
Is there going to be a stream for this event?
Wow, really fast work piano! The game looks great!

I'd like to, but I'm not a very good or motivated streamer, so... I make no promises! But hopefully yes.

Changed plans, now I'm just going to make a traditional RPG. Making a platformer is too hard for my current skill set, especially under a time limit. Especially making original assets from scratch. That's honestly the hardest part.
I was kinda hoping for the RM2K3 event. Oh well
I was kinda hoping for the No-RM event. Oh well

I was tempted to include this one, but I decided it was best to filter out the ones where the main gimmick was to just use a particular engine.
Managed to get my entry in. It's a badaptation of Sorry! that fits within 1.44MB. I had to cut a lot of stuff to make it fit within the allotted space... So much that even the ending is missing. So you could also consider it an abrupt ending game for now.

UPDATE: Forgot to remove a debug NPC from the initial build. If you downloaded the game already, please download it again.
I gave the 2 submissions currently available a quick try and wanted to share my comments in case you'd want to improve the games in the remaining time:

Soulrain: Sorry!
I'm not familiar with the game Sorry! so I can't understand any references made to it as I play this. I don't know if I should.
It's a badaptation... and yes, it's bad :P
Although, for starters, I like the custom art and the isometric view. And being able to form a party out of several characters, although I don't know whether this or that character would make a huge difference...
I reached the first checkpoint and didn't really want to keep playing :P
The first maps are plain and uneventful. The recurrent battle against 3 slimes with nothing but regular attacks at my disposal is not fun. The enemies can one-shot me too. Upgrading your equipment, buying items and healing at the checkpoint's inn require grinding for money.
I couldn't enjoy this game, but I suppose that was the idea.

pianotm: The Collector
This one I do want to try again if you polish it some more, fix a few bugs and add a few quality of life improvements.
The concept and first-person view are not what I'd expect of a short RM event game so I was immediately interested in playing.
It took me a couple of minutes to figure out how movement worked. Up moves you in the direction you're facing, but you can't see what direction you're facing so it might be confusing at times. Left and right make you turn 90° and take a step forward as long as there isn't a wall in that direction. And Down seems to be a 180° turn.
The encounter rate is awfully high: about 1 fight every 2 or 3 steps. I ran out of MP early on, so I suppose that this is the kind of game where you have to fail and die a few times in order to learn.
The gameplay is a bit slow for my tastes. I'd like for the enemies to move faster across the screen and for battle messages to go by a little faster too.
It would be nice to implement HP and MP as gauges to give a clearer indication of how much I have left, instead of changing their color.
Some of the letters in the font are a little weird, like "h" that looks like "b" and "d" that have a strange curve.
I also ran into a bug when I found a chest that contained a health potion while I already had one in my inventory: the closed chest's image stayed on screen when I move away.
If you can improve the game within the time remaining, I would definitely give it another try :)

Thank you!!!

pianotm: The CollectorIt took me a couple of minutes to figure out how movement worked.

Movement is just like it would be on a game made for Apple II or Commodore 64. I based this on the old Dungeons & Dragons games.

The encounter rate is awfully high: about 1 fight every 2 or 3 steps.

I am changing how this works and will probably take me a few hours. I can now set a minimum limit with a variable. Under that, no encounter. Over that, random chance for an encounter. It resets to zero once an encounter hits. It's currently set to 5. I'm averaging about 10 steps before I hit anything, at the moment.

The gameplay is a bit slow for my tastes.

That's easy to fix.

It would be nice to implement HP and MP as gauges to give a clearer indication of how much I have left, instead of changing their color.

I'm not going to change this. Maybe if I make another dungeon crawler, but not for this. It would require several more images and doing the 1.44 jam, I have to think about space. I'd consider it, otherwise, but not for this jam.

Some of the letters in the font are a little weird, like "h" that looks like "b" and "d" that have a strange curve.

1. This would require me to remake every text image. That's just too much.
2. I want a fancy font.

I also ran into a bug when I found a chest that contained a health potion while I already had one in my inventory: the closed chest's image stayed on screen when I move away.

I wish you'd screencapped it so I could find it on the minimap... I had set the picture to the wrong number. That's fixed.

This will take a little time, but I'll probably upload an improved version later today, and if not, definitely tomorrow.
Alright, cool! :)

Another option for the gauges is to have the left part of the HUD (the map and the black background) be shown above the gauges. You can simply move the gauges to the left when they deplete, so they become partially hidden under the HUD, instead of having to draw several gauges.

I did not think about that.
Hmm...I'll take a look at that.
