Description

You have traveled back in time to the 90s! You look around your room and see a massive collection of games. Mario, Zelda, Mega Man, Castlevania, Metroid, Sonic, Street Fighter, and more, all waiting to be played. You can listen to your older brother playing Doom in the other room and The Simpsons on the family TV. You see posters of the Ninja Turtles and Transformers, along with countless toys of all kinds. You can even sense the smell of pizza coming from the kitchen! So many great memories are coming back to you!

You go and turn on your computer and see something different. Not only is your computer more advanced than it ever was before. (Heck, you don't even remember having a computer all for you, you always shared the family computer) It now has a brand new program pre-installed: RPG Maker. "Awesome!" you think, "I can make one of those cool Final Fantasy games!". You proceed to spend hours planning how to make your dream game; thinking of sharing it with all your friends at school until you realize something... You only have a single floppy disk to put the game on.

Well, not everything was better in the past.

-----

The 1.44 Floppy disk event is a way to celebrate the now-obsolete data storage medium and also a way to go back in time and appreciate how valuable space back then; where every single byte was valuable and games were optimized to make the most of each one (Unlike modern games were 50+ GB games has kind of become the norm).

The idea is simple: Make a game that can fit into one floppy disk. While there were lots of different kinds of disks with varying capacities back then, the most standard and well-known was the 1.44 MB one. You are free to do whatever you want as long as it can fit into those 1.44 MB. You are not restricted to the technology of the era either. Any modern game engine is fair game, as long as the compressed game still fits into 1.44 MB.

RULES:
-----

- Teams are allowed.

- You may use any engine.

- You can use any resources you've made in the past. This includes making resources before the event officially starts.

- The games must be uploaded to the event page.

- There must be at least 10 minutes of gameplay.

- The game size can't be larger than 1.44 MB. (After compression of course)

- RTP is allowed but the game should run without it installed. If you need help here are some tutorials for RPG Maker 2003

- The game should be able to run out of the box with minimal fussing. This ideally means that it should run by just clicking the .exe file. But if the game requires some extra files then those same files should go within the 1.44 MB limit.

- The event begins on Wednesday the 14th of April and ends at 4:00 am Thursday the 29th of April. (14.4 days. Get it?)

- RPG Maker VX / Ace, MV, and MZ are not available for this event. Their projects even stripped down to the bare minimum don't give enough room to fit into 1.44 MB. You can still use them if you somehow manage to make the game fit though. Good luck!

- Any questions? You can send a PM to "El_WaKa" on RMN or "WaKa" in the Discord server.

REWARDS:
-----

The best overall game will not only receive "The Golden Disk" achievement but it will also get to pick a free steam key from a list of almost 400+ games! Submitted! It's my first completed solo RPG of more than an hour since, well, my first!
THERE, POSTED BUGFIXES.
turns out the lack of prompt on the batch file confused users and the fullpackage flag wasn't flipped yet. That's fixed now.

and now to hopefully relax.
Finally...(Caught up)

A FullPackageFlag=1 was added in the new version, but that doesn't matter.
Because the game must install RTP to run.

If anyone wants to put the last touches on their game, you've got about a minute til the deadline. Better be fast.
Wow, so close. The event is over. (I almost deleted the last version I uploaded. Originally, I only wanted to delete the previous one.)
Good luck, to all who managed to finish the project :P
I wanna give a big CONTRATULATIONS! to everyone that participated, even if you didn't manage to finish a game hehe. The event only turned out so cool thanks to everyone's support! We got LOTS of entries this time, 26 in total, and I'll be playing and reviewing them through the course of the week. Hopefully, the badges should be rolling next week at most!

It took me a while to understand what I was supposed to do. Then I still didn't understand it. I realized what was going on, but you press keys and there is absolutely no response and there is no honest-to-goodness reason why given that Immolate, Petrify, Target Any, or Target Only, or Exorcize just doesn't advance the game. The only thing that reacts when you press the wrong button is Soulburst. Instructions unclear. Game unclear. Caused the apocalypse. Moving on.

Unbit
This is really cool! A little memory puzzle game with a cool little, jazzy BGM. I like this.

Villain
This is hard, but I love this. The character doesn't appear to be tied to the tile grid. Aesthetically, it works, but functionally, it makes play really obnoxious because he gets stuck on every little thing imaginable.

Detective Waka
The game was fun until Australia. I am not a fan of cheap deaths. Bouncing off the ceiling and into a pit. Slippery platforms. I don't need to know what happens next that badly, and there are plenty of other games to play. I haven't played these kinds of games in years, and it's for BS like this.

HyperDigger
That...was a game. I couldn't quite figure out what I was supposed to be doing, but once I got to the end, I realized that this game was probably intended to be a Shadowrun type of thing. It looked interesting and had some neat gameplay ideas.

Spaghettivase
It's a really neat story. The characters just keep talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and I swear, the conversation on the train about the Webkinz was 80 percent longer than it needed to be. I read into 15 full-text boxes of Webkinz chat before I started just pressing enter to get to the end and it kept going and going and going. And for all of this, I only followed a bird and ran to stop a train, and in both cases, the characters had to stop and talk multiple times, and the train was on a timer...that didn't stop with June's and Charles's incessant talking. Trim your script, yo! I really dig the art, though. I love the look of this game.

Rome
Good game! I do really like this one. Problems: please don't put the attack key right. next. to the. arrows. Why is this still a thing? Sword swinging is a little sluggish. It's almost impossible to attack even a single enemy without getting hit because the sword slash has to be timed exactly right and because the sword's attack range is absurdly small. The soldier has to be facing enemies almost exactly or the sword just won't hit. Pet peeve that really makes me freaking angry. Enemy spawns right. next. to. me. doing instant damage. Taking damage is already 99.9 percent unavoidable, but that just rubs it in. I do love the graphics and I do love that you can wipe out multiple enemies when they bunch up.

We Live to Serve the Ship
This was a neat little short story and prelude to a larger game. Just wish the walking speed wasn't so slow.

Delsin's Romance In Shaly
Brava, Delsin! Bravissima!

Floppy Disk Mainland
OH GODS! MY EYES! I know your intent, but please don't! Please just use normal text box colors! I would very much like to understand what I'm doing. I managed to get a letter to someone in some town, but I could not really read what to do after that. Something about going to a Town Leader?

Tesseract
It's easy to love ASCII games. This one's procedurally generated, but I think it needs a little work. Sometimes you can fight one enemy at a time, but at some restarts, you get absolutely swarmed by enemies with no way to get away.

Spider Trek
Not bad! I am so grateful that when you die, you just go back to the previous page. Kind of like Choose Your Own Adventure!

2033 Neo Crusader Squad
I have no idea what's going on or what I'm supposed to do. There's only one place to go, and absolutely nothing on either map responds to the enter key. The graphics are nice and minimalistic. Your auto title ceiling for the interior is broken.

Unchained
I've already given Decky some feedback, but this is a really nice looking, sharp, well-polished game. But man is it hard!

Ex-Girlfriend
Digging the graphics. Hit boxes on enemies the size of a Cadillac, I see...Oh! Extra lives! That's good! Not enjoying having to press both buttons to interact. OH! Holding the space bar speeds everything up! Not sure how I could use that, but duly noted! Such innuendo! And those MIDI versions of pop songs? I swear that one in the warehouse is super familiar. This is a fun little game!

Thanks, Piano :3 Yeah, I definitely tried to give it the nerf bat a little bit before uploading last night. Years of hardcore MMORPG gameplay kinda made me lose perspective a bit. I highly recommend people play on Casual Mode so they at least have the option to pump up their stats if they run into trouble.

I'm already planning an updated/expanded release on the upcoming gamepage next week.
Thank you for playing my game, Piano. It was kinda tough trying to distill the most important stuff in the rp logs I pulled from, but hopefully I'll be able to scrunch it down a bit more/add some skip options in a later release.

I'm still really surprised that my graphics seem to be appealing to so many folks, considering the rest of the competition in this event (like dude how the heck does one compete with frogge's bitcrushed colormapped refmap tiles?), but regardless I'm grateful for a chance to share what I've been up to lately.

Random thoughts so far:

Frogge's game was a really nice, trippy walk down aesthetic lane. It feels like a proof of concept for a larger work.

Piano's game stays true to old school dragon quest and doesn't overstay its welcome. Probably my favorite of the projects so far. I'm a content kind of guy - any game that gives me lots of areas to slog through and inventories to manage will have my love, and Piano delivers on that front. It was fun to break the game open toward the end with my superpowered character!

I liked the custom graphics in Spaghettivase as well as how colorful the text was - a very unique look!

Ex-Girlfriend was a fun little platformer. The hitbox on some of those enemies seemed pretty mean, though. I won't lie, the title screen and title itself got a little bit of amusement out of me - perhaps from personal experience?

OATH shows so much potential in that intro, but it took me a while to figure out how to leave the town and the world map was a slog. I encountered very difficult enemies everywhere I went, and at 5-step intervals to boot. When I started this game, I had been working on Unchained for 16+ hours and was burnt out, so I probably missed something. It's a game I want to make myself continue to play, though, because it shows so much promise. Soooo hit or miss on this one. With some tweaks, this would easily be among my favorites.

Still have a bunch of games to play through. A bunch!

Corf: It's really nice to see you continuing to flesh out your world with these event games. I'm glad you were able to make the ship tileset work. The style and animation of your text boxes is really clever and unique.

Orochii: I loved the look of this game, and the combat was nice and smooth. It reminded me of some old-school RM2000 cyberpunk games. I think I'll play a bit more when I get the chance.

@Deckiller I'm so sorry! OATH is in need of a rebalancing, and it's missing some things right now, but I got ill and just managed to wrap it all in a neat package to upload. I didn't even add NPCs in villages. But I'll finish the game after the event, once I'm feeling better. Thanks for the kind words and feedback! I'll act upon it as soon as I can.
@Mirak
The game is charming with funny dialogues! I enjoyed it, but like pianotm said, the platformer section is way harder than I expected. Had I known about the ceiling bump, I would have mapped the stage differently to avoid that. I think that the enemies' speed is a little too high as well.

@iddalai
I have mixed feelings about the game. I chose the "right" answers and played solo, which was extremely difficult. I had to grind to Level 15 before I could reach the first dungeon's final map, making slow progress, getting one treasure chest at a time before having to exit, heal and resupply. It took me about 3 hours just to complete the ice cave and I wanted to quit a few times.

There are several balance issues in solo mode: Dungeon enemies are super strong and the Exp and Gold they drop isn't worth it. Overworld enemies are easier and give much more.
The equipment for sale before completing the first dungeon aren't strong enough.
The Ice Gauntlet does not prevent me from being frozen.
The Hex skills are useless in solo mode.
Once CEV the tiger joined it made such a huge difference in the ice cave, but when I attempted the swamp cave I was getting my ass kicked way too often again...
Being able to recruit a wizard with fire spells early on would probably help a lot.

I really like the plot and the general concept, so I think that it's a shame that the game is difficult to the point of being frustrating. If you fixed those balance issues and finished the game, I would definitely want to keep playing.

EDIT: didn't see your comment above mine before I posted :P Take care of yourself!
