Description

Game Chill is a winter game making contest, the goal of which is to make a game in a little over three weeks. Entries will be commented on by a quartet of judges and ranked accordingly. A simple theme is given, but the point is to just have fun making games!

THEME
Design a single winter-themed dungeon for the player to navigate through.

You are required to include in this game at least 3 items from the following list, in some way, shape or form:
  • Gingerbread Men
  • Prayer
  • Frosty the Snowman's hat
  • Hockey
  • Fancy dinner party
  • Bing Crosby

RULES
  • The contest starts now (December 19th, 2013) and goes until January 9th at 11:59pm GMT. Entries must be made during this time-frame. Existing games and projects are not eligible entries for this event.
  • Only completed games are allowed
  • Teams of any size may work together to create a game.
  • All art, music, and sound should be original, public domain or purchased by yourself. When you made it is not important so long as you have proper rights to it. Entrants may stray from this rule if they wish, but should expect harsher judgments towards ripped content than original.
  • Your game must run on the Windows platform. Your game should not require any additional components that a judge would have to purchase or download.
  • Games should come with a readme.txt file of some sort, describing how to play the game, listing any resources used that are not yours, and describing what components the game needs to run.
  • At the end of the contest, 4 judges will rank each game using their own scoring system, and provide commentary for the entries. The final outcome will be determined by the judges. A winner and a runner-up will be selected.
  • Entries not submitted by the end time will not be accepted.
  • Extensions might be possible, but will be granted only by popular vote and judge approval (ie. don't rely on it). If extensions are given, they will apply to everyone, for fairness. If an extension does occur it will be only a few days at most.
  • Your game can be of any genre, not just RPG. (You don't need to have battles, for example!)

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
  • Step 1: Sign up for the contest in the "Registration" section below this event description. You can enter this event solo or as a team. Additionally, you may submit as many games or join as many teams as you'd like.
  • Step 2: Create your game page. Normal submission rules apply.
  • Step 3: Post your download to the game page once it's approved.
  • Step 4: Submit your game download to the contest by using the commands on the upper-right corner of this page.

PRIZES
All participants who successfully submit a valid entry to the event will receive a participation achievement worth 50ms. The winner will receive an additional 100ms achievement for being so awesome. (Hey, not every event needs hundreds of dollars in prizes! This event is "old school RMN".)

Good luck and merry Christmas!

Wait. What's this about games not being complete? Perhaps I am misinterpreting what is being posted, but allow me to drop this friendly reminder:

Only completed games are allowed

I'm not a judge, but to my knowledge the overall consensus among judges is:

You are to create:

  • A complete game with a single winter-themed dungeon.

  • It is permissible to have a small town in addition to the dungeon.

  • It was suggested to have travelling merchants if applicable.

  • The dungeon can consist of several maps that combine to make one area.

  • The judges imply that they will not be severely punishing with these rules, after all the idea is to have fun.

Any judges wanted to add anything?

That pretty much covers it - especially the point about having fun! Thanks, benny.

A dungeon and nearby town is fine. I don't want to be diving into multiple themed dungeons to unite seven magic snowballs of varying colors - even if some of you might be able to pull it off in less than a month - focus on one (1) very sexy, very complete dungeon.

Also, you can take the word "dungeon" liberally - like I said earlier, it doesn't have to be a traditional dungeon, full of monsters and puzzles - it can be a corrupt town, or a rigged trial, or a haunted igloo, or whatever.

Games should be complete, as in playable from start to finish. That doesn't mean it has to be perfect; most of us go back and tweak or add to our jam games afterward. It should just give the player a clear "the game is now over" feeling.

I'm just making a dungeon, which is probably the final dungeon. The "game" basically starts at the point where the heroes enter this particular dungeon. It's not a full game, but rather a small piece of one. The word game is in the description because we use game makers, I don't think it means that it has to be a full complete game.

If I'm interpreting this right, you're saying your game is telling the last chapter of a longer story that the player doesn't get to see. If the game can stand on its own - for example, it presents the missing story to the player - that sounds like a really interesting idea, and totally fine. Am I on the mark here?
I updated the page for a bit to make the theme visible, some said they missed the winter-themed requirement so I changed the font to white <:3c

Yeah. It's a game based on the banner image. So we have no idea why Frosty wanted to kidnap that kid, or why these 3 fighters are trying to save him, or what they went through to get there. We just know that they are close and ready to take him down when they find him. There is still a tutorial intro.

Obviously the game will have to be beatable, but it doesn't have to be a contained game on it's own(right?), with a proper beginning middle and end. An internal resolution. Just one dungeon from a game that could have been.

That's how I choose to interpret it.

I even made some music, which I hardly ever do. I'm taking this pretty seriously :|

Link, that sounds fine to me.
Speaking of that banner, I just noticed something quite "unusual" just now...

Why is this stupid blonde bimbo throwing snowballs at this incredibly large snowman monster!? I mean - how possibly stupid could you be!

Link_2112, if your project is going to be somewhat based on this banner image, and with the type of weapons these kids are already using, we're in trouble!

- There better be a blowtorch weapon that you can find in the dungeon, I swear to god.

what if they're MAGICAL snowballs? or they have rocks in them???????????
They better be awfully magical to put a dent in that frozen gargantuan.
I wanted to make a game off of the banner image, too. it just seems so epic. I'd call it There's Snow Stopping Us Now! and the 4 kids would have to defeat the deranged mutant killer monster snow goons.
Maybe she's been hit by the confusion spell and is now healing the giant snowman?

I don't know... lol.

You're magical to me.

Clearly, the blonde girl is the only one who knows the snow-fiend's tragic weakness to SNOW ITSELF.

Hahaha, I'd play that in a heartbeat.
Suddenly realising how little I have done XD
I've only just realised one half of my dungeon is significantly shorter than the other. I don't know if I should try to add on an extra corridor or room, or leave it as it is.... hmm... still need to make a game page.
...don't expect happy feels from my game guys. It will have winter, a feast, prayers and Gingerbread men, but happy feels it will not have.
haha I thought about that too. She's aiming for the eyes, I think. Or she could knock his hat off, the source of his power.

Hey, please knock off the casual sexism. We want everyone to feel welcome here. Thanks :)

You might be right about trying to aim for the eyes. That hat is too big enough in the picture to knock off with just an ordinary snowball, so going for the eyes makes a lot more sense.

(Hmmm…”Team Sadists,” what are you guys up to…???)

@ GreatRedSpirit – Sorry ‘bout that; my inner Surrey lingo likes to come out once in a while on occasion. This is what happens when you live in a town with a bunch of wannabe gangsters that like to sound like a bunch of wannabe gangsters. X_x
I'm from Alberta. The redneck runs thick in parts of my family and some of my friends. I've even caught myself saying some shitty things, usually after I said it. Just gotta work together to stamp out the awful shit we say but might not catch ourselves!
