Description

Game Chill is a winter game making contest, the goal of which is to make a game in a little over three weeks. Entries will be commented on by a quartet of judges and ranked accordingly. A simple theme is given, but the point is to just have fun making games!

THEME
Design a single winter-themed dungeon for the player to navigate through.

You are required to include in this game at least 3 items from the following list, in some way, shape or form:
  • Gingerbread Men
  • Prayer
  • Frosty the Snowman's hat
  • Hockey
  • Fancy dinner party
  • Bing Crosby

RULES
  • The contest starts now (December 19th, 2013) and goes until January 9th at 11:59pm GMT. Entries must be made during this time-frame. Existing games and projects are not eligible entries for this event.
  • Only completed games are allowed
  • Teams of any size may work together to create a game.
  • All art, music, and sound should be original, public domain or purchased by yourself. When you made it is not important so long as you have proper rights to it. Entrants may stray from this rule if they wish, but should expect harsher judgments towards ripped content than original.
  • Your game must run on the Windows platform. Your game should not require any additional components that a judge would have to purchase or download.
  • Games should come with a readme.txt file of some sort, describing how to play the game, listing any resources used that are not yours, and describing what components the game needs to run.
  • At the end of the contest, 4 judges will rank each game using their own scoring system, and provide commentary for the entries. The final outcome will be determined by the judges. A winner and a runner-up will be selected.
  • Entries not submitted by the end time will not be accepted.
  • Extensions might be possible, but will be granted only by popular vote and judge approval (ie. don't rely on it). If extensions are given, they will apply to everyone, for fairness. If an extension does occur it will be only a few days at most.
  • Your game can be of any genre, not just RPG. (You don't need to have battles, for example!)

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
  • Step 1: Sign up for the contest in the "Registration" section below this event description. You can enter this event solo or as a team. Additionally, you may submit as many games or join as many teams as you'd like.
  • Step 2: Create your game page. Normal submission rules apply.
  • Step 3: Post your download to the game page once it's approved.
  • Step 4: Submit your game download to the contest by using the commands on the upper-right corner of this page.

PRIZES
All participants who successfully submit a valid entry to the event will receive a participation achievement worth 50ms. The winner will receive an additional 100ms achievement for being so awesome. (Hey, not every event needs hundreds of dollars in prizes! This event is "old school RMN".)

Good luck and merry Christmas!

Only six entries to this? Ah well, I hope to play some quality games!
There's another two in the comments of the previous page, so eight all up. Still, a lot less than I was anticipating.
some thought it was PST and not GMT <:3c

iirc there's a flag in the RPG_RT.ini that you need to set so it doesn't check for the RTP. 'RunTimePackage=1' or something? I don't remember :(

*edit*
RunTimePackageIncluded=1 maybe? I'd have to check when I get home

Crap! Totally forgot to do that! I'll edit the ini file tonight and reupload the With RTP version. At work for the next 9 hours.

Just remember to include every file you've used in the game - sound effects, battle animations... even the vehicle characterset (that one trips a lot of people up because while they might not actually use vehicles in-game, it's used in the Database - so watch for anything in the database).

Also, I'd like to add that I've already started LPing games. Four done so far, four more to go~
And by done I mean... well, I decided to just do 20 minutes each and leave it up to viewers to decide whether I do more on any particular game. (That said, 20 minutes of me trying to find clothes and die and die and sing and die... not sure if that'll be entertaining or not. :/ )

20 minutes sounds pretty reasonable to start.

Also, to all of you who complained that TCS was four-five hours, Czarina Must Die is 2.5-3 hours. (I do not apologize for either.) It might actually be a little less, my final save before the last boss says 2:35 and the chance that some of my test runs idled for a few minutes here and here is pretty high. (I had like three different branches of test runs going, orz. If there are any bugs I will cry....)
Liberty there's now a full walkthough on the game page! Sorry you couldn't find the clothes... They weren't that well hidden! At least I thought! ^^

I don't think it was so much the length last time, than it was a huge amount of games and enough of them being about the 5 hour mark. >.<;
Which reminds me that I'll have to redo DD - I was stupid and saved over the original file after an hour and half of gameplay. Because of how long it was, the footage messed up. >.<;

@Kukenstra - Thanks so much. I seem to have run into the clothes but thought they were a rock. >.<; I feel a bit foolish after how many times I tried to find them (I died a lot).

I honestly wouldn't blame you if you didn't feel like rerecording it, lol. The game got chopped in half and was rushed as hell. -I- didn't even get a chance to play it before it released, LouisCyphre was busy with battles up until the last second.

Maybe it's more palatable if you throw in Yanfly's battle overhaul just so it's prettier, idk. I really hate the default battle system soooo i'm biased against my own team game. lololololol
Well, if you do ever go back to it and fix it up, I'll owe you an LP. Or maybe you'd prefer one for a future game. I'm not fussed. XD

Edit: Uh... that frosty game, Link... is it... supposed to ask for 'Disc 2'? >.<; If so, well, played. Well played indeed.

Also, just finished all the LPs. Time to do the uploady thing. Expect a haul. Soonishly.

So:
THIS
is my contest entry, for judges. I'm gonna upload a v1.1 to RMN proper later today (will be 100% compatible with previous saves) that includes a few touch-ups. This post is mainly to let judges know that the above link is v1.0, the contest version (same one I linked on page 11), so that they don't accidentally play whatever I submit as a game page download.

Link, your game confounds me. Is it really supposed to be a single cutscene, then pop back to the title screen?

I know, right? Imagine LPing it when suddenly... Yeah. It confused the hell out of me! XP
haha Yep.

I was finishing up those intro levels and I had planned for them to meet up like that. They see a dungeon entrance and go inside, then a few rooms making up the dungeon would be the main meat of the game. But when I got to that cutscene I was out of time, so I whipped up something in order to put my frosty and gingerbread men sprites in the "game". I didn't have a gameover image, so I wanted it to go to title screen. And I had to put something so you guys wouldn't think it was some sudden glitch, so I made up a silly error :P

I procrastinated and had things get in the way of me doing what I wanted with my remaining time. I pretty much drew everything early on, midway through I came up with some coding things, and fell flat right before crossing the finish line. But you can use your imagination and at least get a glimpse of the game I wanted to make. It would have them walking in a group where you can switch characters at any time. The boss battle would take place on a hockey rink.

I am pretty interested in hooking up sometime. Screw me.

Nothing short of the best game of 2014 so far, Link!

In all seriousness, I found the custom sprites to be awesome. Especially Frosty. And it meets the contest criteria of 3 things you had to include minimum, which I'm guessing *some* games will probably have missed.
Thanks! I would have liked to at least get to the boss battle, where frosty changes his bottom part for goalie pad legs and you have to attack him to whittle away his legs so that he's covering less of the net so it's easier for you score goals because there is a score board and he cheated and gave himself 10 goals and you have to score 11 goals before time runs out in the 3rd period xD When you get close he sends out his gingerbread enforcers, whose cream filled muscle arms are a deadly(and tasty) force not to be taken lightly.

It would be funny if I won by default because nobody else met that 3 criteria part. No, actually, that would be sad..

I'd like to think I met the criteria of three items, but I'm beginning to have my doubts about "Frosty the Snowman's Hat".

I know mine has the requirements (prayer, gingerbread men, fancy dinner party IN THE UNDERWORLD; the game takes place in Czarina's Frozen Fortress during the Winter solstice), so!
