Description

Halloween has come again and this time we let you guys pick the theme.

Fairy Tales are often stories told to give children a moralistic lesson. In and of themselves they can be pretty scary, but they tend to end happily or are resolved in a way that good triumphs in some way.

For this event you are being tasked with taking some of those Fairy Tales that you grew up with and giving them dark twists. From Little Red Riding Hood to Sleeping Beauty to Jack and the Beanstalk, any Fairy Tale is pickable. You can even smush a few together if you like!

- Games must be new - not an old game that you're finishing off - and should have been started after the event starting date. They must abide by site rules and be at least 10 minutes long.
- Submit a gamepage before the end of the event. It must abide by site rules and standards. Upload your game to your gamepage then submit via this event page.
- Team-ups are available.
- You may have more than one entry (in case you want to team up for one game with someone and make your own as well).
- You may pick any Fairy Tale you like, from anywhere in the world - it just has to be recognisable as that story when presented in the game.*
- Start Date: 1st of October
- End date: Midnight of 31st October - SITE TIME! (Remember to change your hourly offset in Settings so you have the right time show up on the page!)

There are three badges up for grabs.
- The Shattered Slipper: 50 MS for a completed game.
- The Bloody Apple: 10 MS for a demo.
- The Bone-filled Oven: 50 MS for being picked by our judge, LockeZ, as the best of the bunch. (Only complete games will be judged!)

That is, having a story based on little red riding hood and it being about a girl called Ridley who goes to school and kills all her friends... well, it might have inspired something of the plot (maybe) but it's not recognisable as such. But a girl who gets convicted of killing her grandmother and runs to hide in the woods where she meets a down-and-out lawyer called Wolfe who tries to help her but finds out that she has a second personality called Cutter who likes to, well, axe questions... that is recognisable as being based in said Fairy Tale.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

PREPARE FOR JUDGMENT

I have been avoiding commenting much because I didn't want to steer people's creations too hard, being the judge for the event. But now I'm going to try to make a video for each game. Some of them might be too long to record the whole thing (or too shitty to play the whole thing) but I can at least try to record the first hour or so of play.

There are 13 entries, and I'll only be playing the 10 which are complete games. The 3 incomplete games that were submitted (Golden Cucumber, La Pazza Leiorso, and The Beauty's Nightmares) still get 10 makerscore but are not eligible for the bonus prize.

Wait wut, La Pazza Leiorso is technically complete. Its just a few bad end routes or optional things weren't added due to time.

Edit: Woop, still had it set to In Production. It's fixed now. >.> *pats libs*
Mine may be too shitty. But it's short, so yea.
Gonna sit down and play these games throughout the midnight. Good job everyone, including the people who didn't finish.

Are you sure? I still have a rar file that I am unable to load.

My advice? Test before upload, there's some sort of issue. If rar isn't working, try turning it into an exe via InstallCreator. I haven't had much problem with my games being corrupt, as I always use InstallCreator.

Hmm, that's weird. One of my friend tried and he had no problem extracting(downloaded from event page -> game page). I'll try to upload a .zip ver soon.

Also, is Craze still doing his/her game? I actually look forward to baba yaga having a burger.

Edit: Added a zip file to downloads.

Hey Darken, you have a file cabinet and a barrel you can walk though. The room with the barrel and cabinet in lower left, the locked door, the key, the stairs, barrels, and shelves.

I also haven't figured out how to use the medpack. It doesn't seem to work like the clips and keys (cancel button). So I got cut up by... whatever that is, and I can't seem to heal.
Dang, outplayed by time! Will unleash some fish at a later date!

I guess I'm running little late. Nonetheless, this is truly a project i intend to finish.
Congrats to all who managed to finish theirs in the imperialist October!
I'm back from family vacay, yay! XD :D And wow! I can't believe the event is indeed finally over, and the final submissions are here! :O Oh my! I cannot wait to see them all getting played indeed! ^_^ :) Amazing job everyone! :D
Ah, just waiting til the judging is done. It hasn't been forgotten.

The judging. One game was played, and then it stopped.

Sorry it took me almost four months, but I've finally finished playing everyone's games and judging them all. Some of them were pretty danged long for a game made in one month, and the time and energy that it takes me to record a game is far higher than just playing one, so my initial plan of recording playthroughs of all the games was what led to my incredible procrastination.

In the end, after taking a month to record the first three, I decided to play the remainder of them off-camera, which meant that I could do so in much smaller segments, while my dishwasher was running, while sick, while lying on my couch half-awake, and without the stress of trying to come up with ten to twenty solid hours of stuff to say about them.

I will give some of my thoughts here though. Darken's game Nemoral, Meaka's game Do Us Part, and Pianotm's game House of Gwendolyn probably did the best job of capturing the twisted fairy tale horror mood that this event was going for. The mood in other games ranged from "This is basically fine, but it's just not quite as good as Pianotm" to "I don't really think setting the fairy tale in Detroit counts as horror." And then there were a few games where it just didn't feel like anything, either because the writing was awful, or because the game was very short and generic. Which, well, was basically what I expected from a short one-month holiday event where people made solo projects. It takes a lot of effort and skill to make something legitimately good, especially in that time frame.

I did think Whimsical Misadventures of Cinderella was FUN, but it fell short of the spooky theme. I didn't get the sense that it was supposed to be "dark" at all, honestly, which was a problem that a few other games also shared. Also it was several hours long and I admit I didn't finish it, so maybe there's a really horrible scene at the end. It was an actual RPG, though, so that was nice.

The gameplay in Nemoral was admittedly simple, but it always felt like a game, with well-placed obstacles and constant tension, instead of a walking simulator with checkpoints. The combats were legitimately fun, and there were just the right number of them. House of Gwendolyn's gameplay felt like the first 10% of a system that would have become fun once the player escaped their home and entered the open world part of the game, if Pianotm had been given an extra two years to work on it. But with an hour of gameplay, it just didn't pay off. Most other games were either "adventure" games with so little gameplay that they were essentially glorified visual novels, or actual visual novels.

If I didn't mention your game, it was probably unremarkable. Sorry. Not every game is in the top 20% of entries. That's kind of just how a competition works. The Peach Wasn't Enough and La Pazza Leiorso were legitimately awful, so if your name isn't Delsin or Bulmabriefs, take heart that you're not in the bottom 20% either.

In the end I picked Nemoral as the winner because I felt it was the only one that succeeded at the combination of both properly capturing the mood and also having enjoyable gameplay. All the other games only really succeeded at one or the other.
Aw yeah sick 1st place. Once again grats to everyone for finishing their games. No worries about the lateness though, it's understandable. I think I played most of the games, but barely remember what I was going to say about them. But yeah I remember House of Gwendolyn standing out in my memory.

Nemoral ended up being a really good learning experience for making the most out of less. Though I think just having an engine that does pixel based collision out of the gate really pays off. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Really wish I made an actual climatic ending, but I think logistically some other area of the game would have suffered. Most of the enemy placements were done in the last 2 days, and frantically getting the "win condition" in place so that killing all the enemies would actually trigger the end of the game (and to save/keep track). There was a bunch of extra fluff I planned too, so I might have wasted precious development with those anyway if I had more time.

I would like to thank you for giving your thoughts on the game. I will admit that the dark themes are barely everpresent in the game. And honestly, the game is never really subtle about it. Honestly, I came onto this event not out of winning and more so because I wanted to collaborate with Starmage. And the result was that game. We had quite the blast working with that together and I'm glad that, while it missed the mark on the theme department, you find it fun. I don't know how far you made it till you stopped since it is a pretty long RPG, but thank you for playing it regardless.

Congrats to all the entrants, especially to Darken who made first place for fitting both criterias very well.
