Judges' comments forthcoming.

First and foremost, thanks to Archeia_Nessiah for the wonderful event page CSS!

October's already here! It sure did sneak up on us like a creepy crawly black widow spider, fangs poised for a nasty, venomous bite! Like all arachnaphobes, we sprang to our feet, panicked, and tripped over the night stand decided that we're overdue for another month-long game development contest!

The Theme? Anything related to Halloween! Horror, trick-or-treating, zombie attacks, ghosts...it's your call!

This is a very broad theme: as long as the game is in the spirit of Halloween, you'll be fine. Feel free to ask if you don't think your game applies to the theme. You may use any game development engine. Additional rules are listed below.

The deadline is 12pm UTC on Halloween4pm UTC on November 3rd. A panel of judges will play each game and rank the top three entries. Users may vote for their favorite game once the contest is over; voting will be handled through this page. Results will be announced via podcast. It's the All Hallows' Event...or, I guess you could say, the Nightmare Before Halloween!

Step 1: Sign up for the contest in the "Registration" section below this event description. You can enter this event solo or as a team. Additionally, you may submit as many games or join as many teams as you'd like.
Step 2: Create your game page. Normal submission rules apply.
Step 3: Post your download to the game page once it's approved.
Step 4: Submit your game download to the contest by using the commands on the upper-right corner of this page.

Winner: Patron Spirit of Halloween Achievement (worth 100 makerscore), an LP from one of the judges, a review from one of the judges, and a free copy of RPG Maker VX Ace.
2nd place: Ragdoll Love Interest Achievement (worth 75 makerscore), an LP from one of the judges, and a review from one of the judges.
3rd place: Duckbilled Evil Scientist Achievement (worth 60 makerscore) and a review from one of the judges.
Voters' choice: Two-Faced Mayor Achievement (worth 100 makerscore).
Participation (including judges): Sadistic Sack's Shadow Achievement (worth 50 makerscore).

(Feel free to nag the judges until you get your review.)

  • The game must be related to Halloween. Unsure if you game meets the theme? Just ask!
  • You may use any game development engine.
  • Only completed games are allowed! No demos!
  • Preexisting resources may be used, but no games that were started before the beginning of the event are allowed.
  • No late submissions; the deadline is strictly 12pm UTC on Halloween (October 31, 2012). Exceptions may be made if judges find a game-breaking bug.
  • There is no limit on team size; you may also work alone.
  • You may submit as many games and join as many teams as you'd like.
  • Judges' entries will not be ranked, but they will still quality for the voters' choice achievement.
  • All necessary files must be included in the download.
  • Only one VX Ace copy is available - please take this into account if you're on a team.
  • If the winner does not want VX Ace, s/he will pass it to the 2nd place winner, and so on, until we find a person who wants it.
  • All of RMN's normal policies apply.
  • If you have any questions, ask in the comments section or PM Deckiller.

Next time, probably just add in, IT WILL BE APPRECIATED IF YOU HAVE A STANDALONE VERSION but it's definitely not a requirement considering how the RTP increases the file size and some of us don't want that when downloading games with our petty nets.
Like really, I get it if everyone is targeting outside audience, but what if they're targeting for players INSIDE THE COMMUNITY. Which is the case of this contest and the voting is only applied by people active in the community anyway and not by the outside audience.
Right. *pats Shinan* Is the colic over now? Good. Run along now...
Very often, in the Sphere community, we usually share finished games *with* the Sphere engine included. Partially because the total download is still almost always less than 10 MB, and partially because there are two slightly different versions of the engine floating around. But mainly because it means you only have to click the EXE to play the game. And when we don't, we're usually sharing a work in progress, so it's expected that people checking it out are going to open it up and look at it in the editor (which is usually removed for finished games).

Not that this relates directly here. It's just that even in a community of people who *all* have the engine, and where it is simple and easy to get the engine separately, we include it anyway.

Not that I really mind one way or another in this contest (Wine and RPG Maker aren't on speaking terms), or have any sway on the judging.

this this this

Wine & Roses was never meant to be anything more than a small game for this community. That's it.

Visions & Voices contains the RTP files it needs because I released it on major Internet hubs, and it now has over 10k downloads. Wine & Roses was made for a small site focused on RM*.

If the judges were pulled out of somewhere other than the rpgmaker IRC channel, I'd probably make a stand-alone version... but, uh. Yeah. YOU ARE ONE OF US MUHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
The other thing is with contests, people tend to still push in the last minute and upload like crazy without really thinking too much on filesize afterwards. It's mostly, should I include rtp and bloat it up taking longer to upload or make it smaller so I can make it in time? This is another rm contest! people have rtp! *plonks it in*

And yes I'm aware of the rule, but it's like almost unspoken around here that you must have rtp to play since it's part of the program and we can't be arsed enough to add it in when it bloats the game to like, 190 mbs or something.

Fair point, although deleting all the stuff you didn't use would avert the 190 bloat by a huge margin. It's one of those "it depends on the individual" with regards to who their target audience is. I don't see anything wrong with making our games more accessible with the only consequence being a few extra mbs, if they know what they're doing or if they compressed it well enough that is.
I'm deferring to Deckiller on this one.

I do have a very minor "accessibility of gameplay" category in my judging criteria, which basically means "were the controls, known bugs, or possible installation pitfalls either totally implicit or explained somewhere in the game or download?" If all a player would do in your game was walk around and push 'a' at things, that's implicit and that's fine. If you had super complex controls and never explained them, or you required wacky things in order to get the download to work and never included a readme explaining how to do those wacky things, I would've made a note of it.

Even still, that's a very minor category in my overall rubric. The things I really focused on were ease of gameplay, quality of experience (which I know is very subjective), and overall feeling of polish.

I don't know if sharing that out in the open is going to ignite some kind of a flamewar, but I'd like to be relatively transparent as a judge.
I agree and disagree with Shinan considering how RMN is also affiliated with RMW and how majority of our userbase are RM* users. That and RMW sponsored some of the prizes for our events too. It's like a given at this point especially since VXACE is the prize here. That said, I also want to point out that the maker of the event even had an official statement.

The lack of an RTP will not disqualify a game, and I would prefer it if judges did not deduct points or anything for the lack of an RTP.Shinan, I understand your crusade, but I think chastising developers might be enough of a deterrent ;) No need to reduce their chances of winning.

wtf rmn, why you double posted.
Yeah Shinan's on the ball here. Making a game that's not standalone and requiring players downloading additional files that's not even used in your own game would suggest laziness and the fact that relying on an third party download just so players can even get a chance to play your game is a big disservice to the developer. You'll have to take in consideration the prospect that you're punishing new off site players who aren't in the rm circle.

Before I joined this site the first thing I did was download a few games to check out what can actually be done with rpgmaker. After extracting them and hitting the game button, every single one cock blocked me with X file required or whatever. And fair enough I dumped them all in the recycling bin. =o=

Of course I know better now, but the problem is that you could be cutting off a huge portion of your potential audience, just for skipping/misreading the rules. And yes it's one massive apparent "non-issue" across all the communities out there, that's never going to get resolved but it shouldn't serve as an excuse to disregarded the rule altogether.

If a DEVELOPER of all people can't be bothered to even include the most basic instructions on how to play or run a game that's... honestly a bit worrying.

In the DOWNLOAD page of DMN you will find:
"Completed game. (v.1.0) RTP not included.
If you need to download the VXACE RTP, you can find it here:
http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/download/run-time-package"

And the first thing you see when you hit new game is a controls guide.

I should think that's enough for a site that's all about hsoting games that more or less follow the same rules. Was this a totally unrelated site, sure, I'd have added loads of explanations, but that is not the case :I
I can see what you mean Shinan, but I think to prevent future confusion, perhaps there could be more specific rules regarding what is meant by "All files must be included in the download". The reason for not including the RTP download for Slenderman's Army, is because there is so little RTP used in the game, and at that point I didn't realize there was any way of removing all the RTP resources that are unnecessary, which would then mean that my file size tripled in size which seemed unnecessary for an RM site which most people penalize you for using RTP and making the file size triple the amount in needs to be.

However you do have a very good point, which perhaps could be considered slightly more during the next competition, which I will definitely be competing in, we had great fun with Slenderman's Army, working on all the Randomization that we used, so Even though it wasn't as popular here. It was a great learning curve for both of us :)
Looking forward to more competitions. Keep it up guys :)

And that's...I think...I mean...it's the RTP. In a RM SITE. Why is that an issue, they're like the main supported program :/

People throw this around like it's a legitimate defense. But the fact is that there is nothing ambiguous about the submission rules. It clearly states that all files have to be included in the download. If that line had been omitted then I could infer that "yeah, RTPs are probably not required". But in this case it actually explicitly says to include the RTP.

I will get the most important bit out of the way first here: I WILL play all the games. So don't worry if you didn't follow rules.

Now then I will clarify some of my reasoning. I have to admit that the reason I volunteered to judge is because I actually read the submission rules and the bit with "all the required files must be included" and I thought "I can judge this because this means I won't have to bother with all those RTPs." Of course in the back of my mind I also had the trolling mode on thinking something along the lines of "then I can call out the noobs who forgot to include the RTP and scorn them for not following the rules and thus furthering my fundamentalist standalone agenda."

Though I thought that maybe a couple of people would fail to follow the rules and a good time be had by all. Not that over half of the entrants would just ignore rules just because they either have no reading comprehension or just "assumed" something that was directly contradictory to the rules themselves!

I'm making this out to be a bigger issue than it is but I think there is a valuable lesson somewhere in the importance of actually following guidelines. You don't submit your short story in some weird format for a short story collection and then just say "oh yeah you just have to download this program to read that file".

Also when I judge I tend to start from the very basics. Pretending to be an idiot (though a somewhat informed one). First I look for some kind of text files with instructions/a manual then when playing I tend to see if there are in-game instructions on how to play the game. When making a game, even if it's for a short contest like this there is really no excuse not to tell people what buttons they are supposed to use. Basic things like "Do I move with the arrows keys or with WASD or do I click the mouse where I want to go?" it's good if they are there and it's not much work. The least anyone can ask for is for someone to spend two minutes writing a short readme with controls.

I'll end my rant with:
And if a JUDGE of all people can't be bothered to download eve the basic tools that's...honestly a bit worrying.

If a DEVELOPER of all people can't be bothered to even include the most basic instructions on how to play or run a game that's... honestly a bit worrying.

Yes! I got one vote! I think this'll be my last contest entry. I embarrass myself when trying to compete.
The only reason to be embarrassed is if you don't try, SP. So keep entering.
After playing through all except Mario (SMBX just hates my computer :< ) here are my personal top picks (in order of the list):
Dead Moon Night
Not a Chance of a Ghost
Wine and Roses
Jack's Eve
The Unwelcome Guest

I was especially surprised by how neat Jack's Eve was. I... really had no idea what it would be like and had it pegged for some game that wasn't worth playing. I was very wrong. If I had to pick one that I liked best, it would be a toss up between Jack's Eve and Dead Moon Night.

Also, other interesting games on the list were Will you ever return?, Festival of Souls and Console Hunt 2.

Note: I'm not counting my own game since that would be... bias. Big thanks to those who voted for it, though. ^.^

They won't be downjudged. I'll force Shinan to play them ;)

So I finally got around to my first pass of the entries. I'll do proper plays probably on Friday. Five games followed the rules of the event:
House of Horrors
The Unwelcome Guest
Veil of Darkness
Where End Times The Saddest Song
Will you ever return?

Disappointing...

(though not the games they were pretty good)

So all the games that haven't included the RTP, will not get a vote from you? Even after Deckiller said this wasn't going to be downjudged, typical I did actually have a d/l for RTP included. *sigh* oh well :) Congratulation to Craze, shame we never got one vote, but there were lots of high qualitiy games. Maybe next time :P
