3rd Place: Dead Moon Night by Fomar0153 and Indra

Judges' comments forthcoming.

First and foremost, thanks to Archeia_Nessiah for the wonderful event page CSS!

October's already here! It sure did sneak up on us like a creepy crawly black widow spider, fangs poised for a nasty, venomous bite! Like all arachnaphobes, we sprang to our feet, panicked, and tripped over the night stand decided that we're overdue for another month-long game development contest!

The Theme? Anything related to Halloween! Horror, trick-or-treating, zombie attacks, ghosts...it's your call!

This is a very broad theme: as long as the game is in the spirit of Halloween, you'll be fine. Feel free to ask if you don't think your game applies to the theme. You may use any game development engine. Additional rules are listed below.

The deadline is 12pm UTC on Halloween4pm UTC on November 3rd. A panel of judges will play each game and rank the top three entries. Users may vote for their favorite game once the contest is over; voting will be handled through this page. Results will be announced via podcast. It's the All Hallows' Event...or, I guess you could say, the Nightmare Before Halloween!

Step 1: Sign up for the contest in the "Registration" section below this event description. You can enter this event solo or as a team. Additionally, you may submit as many games or join as many teams as you'd like.
Step 2: Create your game page. Normal submission rules apply.
Step 3: Post your download to the game page once it's approved.
Step 4: Submit your game download to the contest by using the commands on the upper-right corner of this page.

Winner: Patron Spirit of Halloween Achievement (worth 100 makerscore), an LP from one of the judges, a review from one of the judges, and a free copy of RPG Maker VX Ace.
2nd place: Ragdoll Love Interest Achievement (worth 75 makerscore), an LP from one of the judges, and a review from one of the judges.
3rd place: Duckbilled Evil Scientist Achievement (worth 60 makerscore) and a review from one of the judges.
Voters' choice: Two-Faced Mayor Achievement (worth 100 makerscore).
Participation (including judges): Sadistic Sack's Shadow Achievement (worth 50 makerscore).

(Feel free to nag the judges until you get your review.)

  • The game must be related to Halloween. Unsure if you game meets the theme? Just ask!
  • You may use any game development engine.
  • Only completed games are allowed! No demos!
  • Preexisting resources may be used, but no games that were started before the beginning of the event are allowed.
  • No late submissions; the deadline is strictly 12pm UTC on Halloween (October 31, 2012). Exceptions may be made if judges find a game-breaking bug.
  • There is no limit on team size; you may also work alone.
  • You may submit as many games and join as many teams as you'd like.
  • Judges' entries will not be ranked, but they will still quality for the voters' choice achievement.
  • All necessary files must be included in the download.
  • Only one VX Ace copy is available - please take this into account if you're on a team.
  • If the winner does not want VX Ace, s/he will pass it to the 2nd place winner, and so on, until we find a person who wants it.
  • All of RMN's normal policies apply.
  • If you have any questions, ask in the comments section or PM Deckiller.

NOW that I've voted for president it's time to catch up on some of the games too; I've already played Dead Moon Night and loved it.
I tried and its coming up with an error message...

Liberty, I think I found a game-breaking bug in Where End Times Saddest Songs. I reached the room with the door that Emi doesn't like, and cannot return to the room I got there from. Please advise?

The lack of an RTP will not disqualify a game, and I would prefer it if judges did not deduct points or anything for the lack of an RTP. Shinan, I understand your crusade, but I think chastising developers might be enough of a deterrent ;) No need to reduce their chances of winning.

You don't have to finish a game to judge it, though finishing entries is preferred. We tried to complete as many of the Nugget Crash Course games as we could. If you really dislike a game and have given it a reasonable shot, you don't have to finish it. This is generally accepted. However, if you become stumped, you can always ask the developers for help. Mario's Mansion 2 is kind of an advanced Mario game (and TBH it wasn't geared toward Mario novices or taking the gold prize of an -RPG- contest haha), but we did upload videos of a couple tricky puzzles and you can always ask for solutions and hints.

If there's a game-breaking bug or something like that, you can ask the developer to fix it per usual contest rules.
So rtp doesn't need to be included? That's okay for mine I guess, since it doesn't come with it for some reason, and needs it to play. (Bad problem, but easily fixed.)

I agree entirely when it comes to games you're releasing outside of RMN. I developed and advertised Visions & Voices, which has 10k+ downloads on this site alone.

Wine & Roses was made for a contest on RPG Maker Network. I expect that the judges for such an event would have RTP. =|

Honestly, RMN would do well to have the option on a game profile to have a big download button for a version with RTP and a version without, and a little link underneath saying "don't know which to get? click here!". Uploading two versions and then having a single download button is not very helpful...

I agree with you on this one, that would be lovely to have the option.
There's two options with VX/Ace (and XP too I think?)
Option 1:
-Compress game data and select include RTP (don't encrypt at this point even if you're planning to with the final version)
-Extract that file
-Delete anything you didn't use
-Re-compress however you choose

Option 2:
-Change the RTP line to "RTP=" (minus the quotes)
-Add everything you need

Even though option 2 is technically easier, I usually go with option 1 and I don't know why.
Maybe try editing out the RTP line in the Game.ini file? Not sure if it would do the trick but it might be worth a try to see.
@Liberty
For VX however it seems that it doesn't work. That is what we tried with Slenderman's Lullaby. However it still asked for the RTP...and we used 2 aspects of the RTP. Both of which were imported...
Oh hey guys~
There's this thing called adding only the files you used to your project? It cuts down on the sizes amazingly!

For those who are using 2k3, you can open the RPG_RT.ini file and add in FullPackageFlag=1 and it will read that the RTP is added - so long as every RTP file you used in the game is included in their respective folders.* This way you only have to have the files you used be included.

Pretty sure you just have to have the files you used in their respective folders for VX/A games.

*Just don't forget battle animations (if you used any), sound effects, panoramas, system2 files (people always forget these!) and Vehicles. To double-check, just send to a friend who doesn't have the RTP, or move your own RTP file from where it is to test.
It would depend if the difficulty would suit the game as to it's point, or if it's a contrived and obvious addition to make players stick around a couple of more minutes-

and since I guess my game and download entry didn't get accepted in time, I'll concede and say good job to the other contenders that did so- I shall definitely try out the other games.
I would think that if a game was so broken or grindy that you cannot finish it, it wouldn't stand a chance of being top three anyway, especially with this many entries. But that is just the opinion of someone who has never had the experience of judging anything. Difficulty is a different issue, however. If I thought the game was a contender, I might ask the creator for a save or something to get me past the problem area.
I do not share this crusade, but I'm sure I'll have my own quirks and gripes and axes to grind.

Hopefully, by having three judges, we'll all offset each other's minor prejudices.

That said, I do have a general judging question to ask. Is it expected of us that we'll finish each game, or simply that we'll try? There are some levels in Mario's Mansion that I have been unable to complete, which is keeping me from progressing to the endgame, but I'm not keen on just grinding away at them when there are so many other things to judge. Likewise, if I encounter a game that is exceptionally grindy or broken, am I allowed to play as much of it as I can manage, or do I need the full experience to be judging fairly? I'm willing to give it a try if it happens, but I'm hoping for some leniency.

You could always -=gasp=- check the game page!

RTP is an exception, and in SMBX's case, the directions are on the game page.

Well the rule explicitly says:
All necessary files must be included in the download.

"in the download"

It doesn't for example say "All necessary instructions on how to run the game must be included in the game's gamepage."

Also this is the RPG Maker Network as in the place where we make RPGs not the RPG Maker Network as in the place we only use RPG Maker.

I guess this is really a minor issue and I suppose I'll play the games anyway. But don't expect me to think much of a game that didn't even bother to follow the submission rules. It's just my personal little crusade that I've been on for the last ten years or so.

I didn't have the RTP to play Dead Moon Night, Wine & Roses, Chance of a Ghost et al. Craze linked me up with it, having a great time playing. No biggy for me. Good times.
However, it might be an idea to include the RTP to give your game a stand-alone, easy-access feel for gamers who aren't so clued up about indie game making (mums, mates etc). Most people these days have adequate storage on their computers/ hard drives for a few extra MBs of awesome game.
While I have all the RTP needed, I agree with Jack.
Add an extra download, and with this extra download add ONLY THE RTP THAT IS NEEDED.
This way, you might be able to skip putting the 50mb animations or something :P
(Gonna judge some more games later tonight.)
