Description

The resource creation event you've all been waiting for!

Make monster graphics from my 7 year old's crayon designs

On RMN's official(ly bad) twitter @rpgmaker, I posted some pictures I took of my son's monster designs. @plsvotetuckie then took one of those designs and made a pixel art version!

An idea was born.

In this short event we will:
  • Create pixel art version of these monster designs for use in RPG Maker
  • Try to decipher my son's horrible writing
  • Come up with descriptions and movesets for these monsters
  • (Optionally) Create a short battle demo
  • Submit them all to this event page

I will post the 6 designs below, along with a link to a higher resolution version. The deadline is December 4th.

Submit your entries using the toolbar in the upper right, and then make a post showing them off in the comments below!

Coulddas
(or Coulddus or Coyldday (sometimes his Ys look like Ss))

High-res version

Are those arms? Feet? Spikes? Is that his mouth, or some mouth-tentacles, or maybe tusks? Is he wearing an eyepatch?

Balbo
(or Backbe or Baelbe)

High-res version

Is he a ghost? Is that a giant tail or a gargantuan arm? He looks mean.

Watewack
(or Wutewalk or Watowark)

High-res version

Wings, perhaps? Or is he a really short caterpillar and that's a floating blade or whip in front of him? Kinda cute!

Netsop
(or Netstop or Ivetslop)

High-res version

Claws or wings? So tall, majestic and menacing!

Peelc
(or Peek or Pedl)

High-res version

His friendly face belies his terrible nature...

Yoidu Keeprel
(or Yoida Keepall?)

High-res version

The event's mascot. Of course.

BONUS!
These were found in my son's room after I cleaned it the other day. Feel free to make enemies out of them, as well! Maybe I will make a bonus achievement, too...

a'Afte
(and then a bunch of sight words...)

High-res version

A three eyed turtle, maybe?

Beenboo
(or Bee Boon?)

High-res version

A tall ghostly figure with a crooked nose, methinks.

If you submit at least one monster, you will be deemed a participant and receive a Yoidu achievement worth 5ms. If you submit all six monsters, you will receive an additional Netsop achievement worth 10ms.

Participants who submit a battle demo will receive a Balbo achievement worth 5ms.

The fan-favourite (as determined by voting after the event) will win the Coulddas achievement worth 20ms.

Unleash your inner-7-year-old and make some monsters!

update December 15th:
ULTRA BONUS ROUND!!

..:: Pinchy ::..

high-res version

Here is a monster my 4yo designed. He told me he has "pinchy arms". I'll call him Pinchy. (We are a family of RPG makers, apparently).

Anyone who designs a monster from him by Monday will get the special "Pinchy" achievement.

Tentacrap

ETA: Which reminds me of a horrible but funny story my vet friend told me. Which I will not share for reasons which should be obvious.

Description: The Backbe is a deceptive beast. The horns shine to distract its prey and make the prey think that their greatest threat comes from the (actually fragile) horns, when it's actually the right foreleg, a modified limb that functions as a blade, covered in fine dark fur to help ensure it escapes notice. Even its grin serves to help this purpose.
Attacks:
Cleave: A heavy cleave with that blade limb.
Dazzle: The Backbe uses its teeth to stun a person.
Stomp: If desperate can use its own weight to boost its attack for a couple of turns.

Ocean also submitted "Octopoos" and "Turdtopus", both of which I find hilarious.

Anyone wanting to come up with movesets? Haha. Else I will do that towards the end

I thought 6 pack abs might look good on Yoida. XD

Netslop. Such a beautiful creature.

Made me a Balbo. I'm slowly working my way through the whole set.
This was too cute to pass up, so I did a (terribly) animated Watowark:

200%

100%

Sheet:
The first sheet is compatible with RM2K3, as I'm not familiar with the other engines.
At 100%, each frame is 96 * 96 pixels.

He gets angry easily.

This looks like a worm serial killer XDD

is coulddas wearing a cloak?? i guess so??

200%!

100%!

Coulddas battle graphic.

A sample of the battle screen.

It's almost done! Maybe two more days. I have two more enemies to implement. I made custom graphics for everything, and turned this project into somewhat of a tiny game where you walk around a small area and battle the monsters. The game boasts a whopping EIGHT WHOLE COLORS.

Netslop is a boss that has a rather... unique battle mechanic. I won't surprise it for those who want to play it (I'll post it later in this topic), but it changes the skills the players have to use in order to fight him. He's one of the more unique enemies.

Balbo is also implemented as a boss: he likes to strange people while wailing on the party. This strangling, of course, harms the character he grabs, but the player grabbed can still help his party out by jabbing Balbo in the eyes, or thrashing around. The player will have to juggle between taking damage and weakening Balbo so he can be defeated. Simply put, Balbo hits too hard to face head on, but he can be significantly weakened throughout the fight.

I've finished implementing the PC's skill sets (a little more refining is all), and all of the skills will be crucial to battle. Certain spells will affect enemies different. Gredge's Ice Tomb, for lesser enemies (Watewack and Youidu Keeprel), will freeze them for an extra turn. Against Netslop, however, the Ice Tomb won't freeze Netslop, but will weaken him, hardening his slime and making him more fragile to physical attacks.

All in all I really enjoy fighting these guys and I think you all will enjoy it as well.

Second guy is CLEARLY Beer Boo, the ghost who loves brewskis.
I'm pretty sure the turtle has four eyes, not three (also the high-res link doesn't work, so I raided your locker and found a working one)
hrmm... possibly.

Anywho, the slimy tentacle pirate Coulddas!

and the fearsome 4 legged beast Balbo!

DRILLCHEST!
Archstone, my battle demo/minigame has been released!

* All character skills are crucial to survive. There are no "Fire I, Fire II. etc" skills. All damage skills do something other than straight-forward damage.
* No items, no leveling up, just combat against all of the original monsters from this event.
* Bosses can change the rules of combat.
* It's short.
* All original game graphics, tilesets, icons, (cheap) animations, etc.
* A whopping 8 whole colors.
* You can actually control Gredge, and experience the joys of having him die on you in combat.
* Losing does not end the game. Mostly.
* Makes a good game to play while waiting for Craze to release his game.

Tips:
* All attacks are set to 100% hit, unless a debuff affects it.
* Poison is helpful, don't ignore it. Damage skills deal damage on top of having a chance to apply a status effect.
* If a character suddenly loses the ability to attack or use a Magic/Special skill, check to see if another menu command opened up for that character.
* Marle is primarily your magic damage-dealer.
* Gredge is primarily your healer.
* The third character is primarily your tank.

Hope you all enjoy it! May make a game page for it in the future.

You're magical to me.

Wow, looks super cool, Gredge! I'll have to give it a playthrough, perhaps tonight ^_^

I've got a tiny game also in the works for this. I don't have a name yet, but I'm trying to make it feel very like what a 7-year-old might make XD
