Description

So last month RPG Maker MZ, the latest in the RPG Maker series, was released! With a bunch of quality of life upgrades, better ability to run on potatoes and a whole new way of dealing with animations (and plugins, too) - well it's a pretty decent upgrade!

So, we're gonna celebrate the next footstep in the beloved series by having a small event to check it out. The idea behind this event is to play with the engine and see what it can do in comparison to other RM engines, at the base level. Basically, you can do testing, figure out eventing and just mess around with what's there. Get a feel for the engine and how it is to make stuff in, how it stacks up against other RM engines or how RM engines feel to gammak in.

Thankfully, this time they released it with a trial version! Extra fun for those who don't have the cashola to buy. ;p

Rules
- Make a small game (at least 5 minutes gameplay) over the course of a week.
- Can only use RPG Maker MZ (bought or trial is fine)
- NO PLUGINS! We're going old-school! (holy shit)
- RTP only! (I know. I'm sorry ;.; )
- Gammak start Midnight of Friday 18th/Saturday 19th.
- Gammak end Midnight of Sunday 27th/Monday 28th.

Make sure to check your hourly offset in Settings so that the timer on the side of this page shows the start and end times in your timezone!

When you're done hit Submit in the top-right corner of this page (just above the logo).

This is a challenge and get-to-know-you event! Oh... AND A COMPETITION!
What does that mean? It means you are challenged to make something short and sweet using ONLY the base components of the engine. Eventing and RTP. No plugins, no custom art (bar UIs for evented menus, for example), no parallaxing. Use the engine as it stands, without additions, to create a game.

Thus the reason why it's a shorter event. So people can just dive in, mess about a bit and get to know/understand the engine whilst making something simple (if they're new to RPG Maker) or challenge themselves with the restrictions of events/RTP only (for those who are used to the engine).

COMPETITION
Thanks to Ocean and his generosity this is now a Competition. The prize? A full version of RPG MAKER MZ! I (liberty) will be the judge, you will be the jury and there's no need for an executioner!

After the event ends, there will be a week to play the games and you can vote on which game you thought was the best of the bunch. I will then judge from the top 3 games that you, the jury, have picked and choose the overall winner!

FAQs

Can we use custom art such as pictures?
Only if they're RTP edits (for example, editing the window skin for UI purposes or facesets for portraits, etc)

What about DLCs that were released with the engine? The 60+ plugins and extra DLC files?
Nope! Only what is in the engine when you crack it open on a new project (bar, again, UI pictures).

Generator faces/sprites okay?
Yes.

RTP edits?
Self-edits are allowed but they must be based on the RTP and not be custom stuff.

What about scriptlets?
You can use scriptlets to call stuff - like a shortcut to commands, but not to add/remove stuff.

Where can I get the engine and how much does it cost?
You can buy the engine either on Steam or on RPGMakerWeb, however, there is also a free trial that lets you use the engine unrestricted for 20 days. If you don't know whether you want to buy it yet, get the trial instead.

Imma have to drop too. Didnt have as much time this week for gammak as I thought I would. Best of luck to everyone!
I am actually regretting not having learned how to make good battles (since my games are all without battles ToT)... I guess I am going to lose so much valuable time now on figuring out how...

It's a good skill to learn, because I believe the elements of what makes good turn-based combat is universal regardless of the battle system used. But I'm saying that not knowing if my own game's battle system is either strategic or tedious.

Personally, I'm jealous at people who can make engaging games without combat. I have trouble writing stories with any more depth than people punching each other in the face over a McGuffin.

I totally agree with you, that it's a very good skill to learn. Especially for us game makers. I am realizing that there is sooooo much more behind making battles than I was aware of. The hard work is balancing everything... My respect goes to all battle makers out there!

Me too!!! I am not sure my games are that engaging... Most of the time when I play test them, I realize they are just text reading and a bit boring... I hope that with the time I am going to improve the storytelling and the gameplay of my games :)

Shared this on the Discord channel, but, I feel I have to share it here, too.

Why do you keep doing this to me, MZ!?

*Edit: In other news, yes! I'll be writing up some kind of ending to this game soon-ish! I'll have plenty of time to playtest, debug, fine-tune, polish, and all that good stuffs!

That's surely annoying... I wonder what's the problem behind it? Maybe you should try to reinstall it?

Wow already?! Congrats!!! I am still very behind... I am just finished with the mapping. I am going to finish the battles today (I hope so at least) and then I have all the events... I really hope I am going to finish it in time...

I should have mapping mostly done by tomorrow...I've been primarily working on event code and RTP fiddles.

My event games are usually on the 2.5 end of 5 stars but it's the attempt that counts right? riGHT?

Well, updating the engine (and project) to version 1.0.2 has worked. So far. You'll have to forgive me if I don't quite trust it yet!
For me, I have everything done except the last two combat encounters and the surrounding text.

Glad I set realistic goals for once.
My gamepage is still pending but my entry is ready.

The tiles' blockiness is a big turn-off for me, as it was since VX, but some of the large portraits in the DLC folder are great.
I also noticed that I can't change small things like the gauges' colors or the Critical Dmg multiplier the way I could in the previous versions' scripts. Maybe that MZ plugins are needed for that...

Three days left!

I actually officially dropped out now.
A lot of things happened in this week so I am dropping out.
OMG, I'm afraid I don't have more time to finish MZ event, can the time be extended?

Avee, I'm just putting it out but you don't need a gamepage for this event.

Oh! Whoops! Yeah, Avee, this event uses the event locker.
As mentioned, Avee, no gamepage needed for this event. You just hit sumbit at the top-right, pick your game and upload it here. Sorry for any confusion (I usually say if you need a gamepage or not in the rules, for future reference).

Ulevo - unfortunately it's only a week long event. That said, if you want to do more to the game after that time, you certainly can! You only need 5 minutes of gameplay for your game to count for a badge, as long as you upload it here before the end of the event.

I certainly have plans to expand my own after this event is over.

Got hit with a major hiccup where a certain teleport command refused to work as intended. Thankfully I'm a lot older than when I was first making evented systems, and therefore, a little better at testing. It did set me back a lil, but you can now go from one end of the game to the other, there's some basic enemy builds, and for the most part its a matter of filling in detail rather than building basic functionality.

Running from one end to the other can take anywhere between 2 to 5 minutes already so i could totally submit it now!

...I am not going to do that.
